Fairbanks Morse Defense Acquires Samtan Engineering Corporation

Fairbanks Morse Defense (FMD), a portfolio company of Arcline Investment Management, has acquired single-source metalworking supplier Samtan Engineering Corporation based in Malden, Mass. Samtan’s metalworking services expand FMD’s portfolio with shearing, punching, forming, machining, fabrication and assembly capabilities.“Our acquisition of Samtan Engineering Corporation allows Fairbanks Morse Defense to continue delivering value far beyond the cost of our services through the seamless integration of metal-stamped products and machine shop services,” said FMD CEO George Whittier.

HII Names Borkey Chief Technology Officer

BAE Systems Wins Navy Contract

British multinational BAE Systems was awarded a pair of contracts worth $300 million that will support the Navy in digital endeavors.The first is a $212 million contract from the Navy’s Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division to integrate and sustain critical communications systems. Saab, Damen Jointly Pursue Submarine Contracts

Swedish defense and security company Saab has partnered with Dutch shipbuilder Damen Shipyards to explore future opportunities in the international submarine market, signing an exclusive teaming agreement to work together in pursuit of the potential Walrus-class submarine replacement program for the Netherlands. Additionally, Saab and Damen will also explore ways in which they might bid jointly on other submarine procurement programs. Through the acquisition of Kockums, Saab has experience in the design and manufacture of submarines and surface vessels for a global customer base, integrating advanced systems and using a range of ultra-modern materials and construction techniques. Saab to Overhaul Swedish Navy Submarine

Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) to overhaul the Swedish Navy submarine HMS Södermanland. The order, valued at SEK121 million, is part of the letter of intent announced on June 9, 2014 regarding Swedish armed forces’ underwater capabilities. According to a statement from Saab, the overhaul includes the necessary measures to ensure the submarine's operational availability. One provision of the contract is to define future needs for maintenance, which could result in additional work being contracted separately during the period.

Smiths Detection Names Head of Global Programs

Edgewood, Md. - Smiths Detection today named Sal Cipres as Head of Global Programs, which oversees all Smiths Detection program efforts for transportation, military, ports and borders, emergency response and critical infrastructure markets worldwide. NSRP Approves $1.4m in Shipbuilding Program Funds

As part of the National Shipbuilding Research Program’s (NSRP) core mission to reduce the costs associated with Navy shipbuilding and repair, the NSRP Executive Control Board has selected 15 new research and development projects for award, totaling approximately $1.4M. The NSRP Executive Control Board allocates funds on an approximately annual basis to fund a portfolio of relatively small, short timeframe projects - one year or less, $100K or less. The Project Portfolio contains summary information on all current and completed NSRP projects. New CADCAM Solution

Working in cooperation, Napa Ltd and DRS Defense Solutions, LLC, Advanced Marine Technology Center (DRS DS AMTC) have created a new interface between NAPA and MAESTRO software. Interfacing these two products will increase efficiency in the early stage of ship structural design, analysis and evaluation process by allowing the designer to leverage one 3D model from start to finish within the scope of structural design and direct analysis. This will eliminate the very common practice of recreating 3D structural models to serve different activities. “This will be the most extensive finite element interface in NAPA, and it will help to shorten the overall time in structural analysis significantly,” says Tomi Holmberg, Manager at NAPA Business Unit.

Colfax Corporation (NYSE: CFX), a provider of fluid-handling solutions for critical applications, announced that William E. Roller has been promoted to executive vice president of Colfax Americas. He was most recently senior vice president and general manager of Colfax Americas. NSRP Approves $1.2M for New Projects

As part of the National Shipbuilding Research Program’s (NSRP) core mission to reduce the costs associated with Navy shipbuilding and repair, the NSRP Executive Control Board has selected 14 new research and development projects for award, totaling approximately $1.2M. These projects will be executed under the purview of the 10 NSRP communities of practice known as the Ship Production Panels. Focus and interest among panel members regularly reveal relevant project opportunities which may not be well suited for larger-scale funding via the primary NSRP solicitation process. The Board therefore typically sets aside an amount of money each year to fund relatively small (less than $100K), short-term (12 months or less) projects recommended by the Panel Chairs.

Raytheon, U.S. Navy Sign $259.9m Contract

Raytheon Company (NYSE:RTN) is being awarded a $259.9m U.S. Navy contract to overhaul and upgrade 57 Phalanx Close-In Weapon Systems and to provide ancillary equipment, spares, as well as additional technical support. The agreement calls for 40 sea-based Phalanx systems and 17 Centurion Land-Based Phalanx Weapon Systems. Phalanx is a rapid-fire, computer-controlled radar and 20 mm gun system that automatically acquires, tracks, and destroys enemy threats that have penetrated all other ship defense systems. More than 890 systems have been built and deployed in the navies of 25 nations. Centurion LPWS defends ground forces and high value sites against rocket, artillery and mortar attacks. Twenty-two have been delivered to the U.S. Army and 10 to the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence.
