Thordon Bearings: EAL Protection in a Class of its Own

The ideal solution for the tightening regulatory noose also brings a different (and welcome) shade of ā€˜greenā€™ for workboat operators. As the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA ramps up enforcement of regulations that mandate that all vessels over 24 meters (78 feet) operating in US waters must switch over to EALs in all oil-to-sea interfaces before their next drydocking, it is an arguably good time to be in the lubricants business. At the same time, Thordon Bearings, a manufacturer of seawater lubricated bearings for the marine industry has its own thoughts on that very topic. Specifically, Craig Carter, Thordon Bearingsā€™ Director of Marketing and Customer Service, asks, ā€œWhat is the point in shipowners investing in costly bio-lubricants when seawater is widely available and 100% free?

Delta Marine said its vessel Whalsa Lass has demonstrated its versatility during recently completed works on the large windfarm off the coast of Grimsby, U.K. for one of the ā€œBig 6ā€ energy contractors. The windfarm consists of 73 Vesta V112 3MW turbines located in water depths of some 15 meters and is now providing electricity sufficient to power up to 170,000 homes. When the Shetland based operator chartered its Damen 2611 Multicat for a basic remit to serve as anchor handler for the cable laying vessel it had no idea what further scope of services the vessel would be called upon to perform.

Versatile Boat With Specialized Options

When one hears ā€œoff shore energyā€ in the marine sector, it is the petroleum industry that comes most readily to mind. Now a Shetland vessel chartering company has taken delivery of a boat with specialized equipment to support the maintenance of off shore wind-powered electrical generating units. Serving a function similar to that of Gulf of Mexico jack-up boats the new vessel has two 15-meter spud legs to hold it in position while servicing the wind mills. The portside push bows have a gap to suit the four-meter base of wind-farm piles, allowing the vessel to push up against the pile without fear of sliding off. The harder you push the less motion is felt at the bow of the vessel therefore allowing the safe transfer of personnel and heavy partsā€¦
