Trelleborg Wins Elastopipe Contract

Swedish global engineering group Trelleborg's  offshore operation has been awarded a major multi-million USD contract by Mexican state-owned petroleum company, Pemex, for Elastopipe.Elastopipe, a patented flexible piping system developed for transporting a variety of fluids, will be installed on board the Abkatun A complex in the Bay of Campeche in the Gulf of Mexico.Morten Kristensen, Business Group Director at Trelleborg’s offshore facility in Norway, said: “This is our first contract made directly with Pemex and the largest contract in our history for Trelleborg’s Elastopipe system. New Tug Joins McAllister Towing Fleet

McAllister Towing has taken delivery of Rosemary McAllister, the second in a series of four 100’ x 40’, 80 metric ton bollard pull tugboats. The new vessel, the 32nd tractor tug in McAllister’s fleet, was completed at Eastern Shipbuilding in Panama City, Fla.The Rosemary is powered by 3516E Tier IV Caterpillar engines with twin Schottel SRP4000FP units. Packed into her 100’ x 40’ hull is 6,770 horsepower. She has already exceeded expectations as she achieved 82.75 metric tons during her ABS bollard pull certification. Best Workboats of 2017

Marine News showcases the best of North America’s 2017 workboat deliveries. There is something for everyone. Notwithstanding the lingering offshore energy downturn, there were plenty of bright spots for North American shipyards in 2017. If a hull was delivered in 2017, we took a look at it, with several areas as a focus for inclusion into this edition. For starters, it is always exciting when a domestic yard delivers a vessel – or multiple vessels, for that matter – to foreign buyers. We can compete in a foreign arena; on price, quality and on-time delivery. This year was no different. No less important is the environmental footprint of a vessel, and there was plenty to report on from that angle in the past 12 months. The domestic waterfront is indeed getting greener and cleaner.

Tier IV Tug Delivered to McAllister Towing

McAllister Towing announced the arrival in N.Y. of the tug Capt. Brian A. McAllister, the first EPA Tier IV tug on the U.S. East Coast according to the company. Capt. Brian A. McAllister is powered by 3516E Tier IV Caterpillar engines with twin Schottel SRP4000FP units. Packed into its 100 x 40 ft. hull is 6,770 hp and more than 80 metric tons of bollard pull. Combining that power with a Markey class III escort winch on the bow and a Markey 2.25-in. wire winch on the stern puts the the tug in a class of her own.

DNV GL: Enhancing Fire Safety on Ro-Ro Decks

DNV GL has issued a report on fire incidents in Ro-Ro spaces to address growing safety concerns in this segment and provide guidance to shipowners. DNV GL’s “Fires on Ro-Ro decks” has examined fires within Ro-Ro spaces on Ro-Pax vessels, vehicle carriers and general Ro-Ro cargo vessels and has identified 35 such fires between 2005 and 2016. A previous DNV GL paper on Ro-Ro fires, published in 2005, had counted 25 fires in Ro-Ro spaces between 1990 and 2003. “We would like to contribute with facts, as well as with our experience. Hopefully, this can be useful input to operators and legislators in order to focus on the relevant items and make the right decisions,” says Hans Eivind Siewers, Segment Director Passenger Ships & Ro-Ro at DNV GL – Maritime.

Interferry Acts on RO/RO Deck Fire Safety

In response to a string of major incidents, Interferry has produced operational best practice guidance for fire safety on ro-ro vehicle decks. These measures, which aim to to enhance fire prevention, detection and suppression, highlight the need for continuous monitoring, rapid response and optimum efficiency of deluge drencher systems, the trade association said. The guidance is based on input from a questionnaire sent to association members last year following at least seven serious fire incidents on ro-pax ships in Europe since 2010. The two most recent incidents resulted in fatalities and total loss of the ships, prompting the initiative by Interferry’s Operators Policy Committee to identify and publicize a common set of best practice mitigating actions.

Trelleborg Steps Into Canadian Market

Trelleborg’s offshore and marine systems operations will, for the first time, showcase a number of its latest product developments at the Atlantic Canada Petroleum Show (ACPS), Newfoundland, later this month. These include thermal insulation, over bend and fire deluge systems, as well as subsea buoyancy and fender solutions. Trelleborg will present its U.S. Coast Guard approved Elastopipe; a corrosion-free alternative to carbon steel deluge systems made from synthetic rubber, as well as its SeaCushion fenders.

The Marine Industry and LNG

Several years ago many people in the marine industry either did not know about LNG or did not think that it would amount to anything worth more than a passing interest. At that time there were just four LNG import terminals in the and even they were underutilized. Today there are eight LNG import terminals in operation with two more slated for their first “cool down” shipments this year or early next year. In addition there is an LNG facility in just over the boarder where companies are also operation.

Washburn & Doughty and BTT Team Up to Build Tugs for LNG Application

Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. of East Boothbay, Maine is currently building two 4400 HP Z Drive (ASD) Tugs for Boston Towing & Transportation Company (BTT) of Boston, Massachusetts. The vessels measure 92’ x 32’ x 13’9” and have an estimated bollard pull of 110,000 lbs ahead and 105,000 lbs astern. BTT is a division of Reinauer Transportation Companies of Staten Island, New York. The vessels, which will be named Freedom and Liberty, were design to fulfill BTT’s contract with Tractebel LNG Shipping North America LLC. Tractebel brings LNG ships into Boston Harbor. The tugs will assist the LNG tankers during inbound and outbound transits and will be used to turn the ships 180° in the basin east of the Tobin Bridge and back them under the bridge to their Mystic River berth.
