Sir Michael Bibby New President of UK Chamber of Shipping
Sir Michael Bibby was elected President of the UK Chamber of Shipping at the organisationâs Annual General Meeting in London. He becomes the Chamberâs 132nd president in its 140th year. John Denholm, chairman of J&J Denholm, was elected Vice-President at the meeting, which was attended by over 100 people from the Chamberâs member companies. Sir Michael is planning to step back from his position as Managing Director of Bibby Line Group during 2018 to allow him to better focus his time on external work interests, including his involvement with the UK Chamber. He used his inaugural speech as President to praise the Chamberâs rising political and media influence, and its success with the SMarT Plus campaign, a joint proposal with Nautilus that became Government policy in February.

Denholm to Speak About BIMCO at Next SPNL Event
John Denholm is set to give a speech on the history of Denholm and the BIMCO story from a shipownersâ perspective at the next Shipping Professionals Network London (SPNL) meeting. The event is sponsored by Norton Rose Fulbright and will be held at their offices in south east London on April 24. Denholm joined the family business as an accountant in 1981 after qualifying as a chartered accountant. He has since held the roles of Group Accountant, Group Finance Director, and Group Managing Director and is currently Group Chairman and Chief Executive.

Kopernicki joins BMT Group Board
BMT Group Ltd., an international design, engineering and risk management consultancy, has announced that Jan Kopernicki has joined the Board of Directors as a nonexecutive Director. Jan has extensive experience in the shipping industry, with his career at Shell spanning over 40 years. As Head of Shipping until his retirement in 2011, his global team was responsible for Shellâs portfolio of oil tanker, LPG and LNG vessels and for advising on safety and environmental aspects of shipping.

BIMCO has published its Reflections 2014, a short and accessible analysis including its clear views on the critical issues faced by the shipping industry today and in the coming years. Not least, the steady improvement of the global economy is bettering the outlook for shipping, as demand goes up and fleet expansion growth cools off, the market fundamentals are expected to improve across the board. Windows of sustainable earnings are likely to occur more often going forward. But the regulatory burdens, notably those seeking to address environmental pressures, remain major challenges to the industryâs cost base at a time when resources are limited. This includes massive challenges on sulphur limits, ship efficiency, ballast water treatment and NOx regulation.
IMO Symposium Debates Sustainable Maritime Transportation System
An IMO symposium on a Sustainable Maritime Transportation System, held on world Maritime Day (September 26, 2013), provided an opportunity for a discussion on a global agenda for a sustainable maritime transportation system. John Denholm Takes Over BIMCO Presidency
The new president of BIMCO, John Denholm, has identified environmental pressures facing the shipping industry as some of its most significant current challenges as he embarks upon his two year term. New York Shipping Conference: The New Normal
Examining key industry drivers is the focus of the 17th annual Hellenic-American and Norwegian-American Chambers of Commerce annual conference, often called the New York Shipping Conference. Barwil, Denholm Form Partnership
Barwil, the Wilh.Wilhelmsen Group's global provider of Port & Marine Services has acquired a 40 percent stake in Denholm Shipping Services Ltd. (DSS), owned by the UK-based Denholm Group. The company will be rebranded as Denholm Barwil Limited and managed by the existing DSS management team led by Niall Denholm.
Lillie Elected President of SCMS
John Lillie has succeeded Captain Chris Spencer as president of the Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors. The society says that the age demography of members reflects the poor performance of the British shipping industry in the 1970s and 1980s. However, now the future looks encouraging as the industry rebounds and men and women obtain professional qualifications and, more importantly, experience in their profession. Lillie, a fellow of IMarEST, will be an invited speaker at the important September annual conference of the International Union of Marine Insurance in Copenhagen. On May 1 he launched his own consultancy ââŹâ JSL Marine Associates Ltd.
Ailsa-Troon Continues To Climb
Ailsa-Troon is in the midst of its winter refit season, having recently completed work on Saturn and Loch Buie - two ferries operated by Caledonian MacBrayne. The yard is also working on Juno - another vessel for Caledonian, before beginning work on Loch Alainn, Loch Tarbert, Loch Dunvegan, Loch Fyne and Jupiter. Recently, the yard has filled up with various commercial and government owned vessels, including range safety vessel, Petard, and Ixworth, a diving support vessel - both owned by MoD - as well as Salmaster - a mooring and salvage vessel managed by Serco Denholm. Ailsa-Troon also performed work on a 112 ft. (34 m) cutter named Sentinel owned by H.M. Customs & Excise.
