Port of Montreal Plans $132m Expansion
Ottawa government has announced a multimillion-dollar investment for the Port of Montreal, meant to facilitate exports following a new trade deal with Europe. The Port will receive a $132-million makeover in anticipation of an increase in exports. Ottawa will contribute $43.7 million to the project. The remainder of the money will come from the port itself. Federal Infrastructure Minister Denis Lebel said the expansion project was "directly linked" to the new trade deal with Europe. He hoped that the Port of Montreal becomes even more of a regional hub and that trade with the EU increases exponentially. The fund will be used toward deepening mooring posts, facilitating the circulation of trucks and increasing the port’s capacity to handle containers.

Minister Lebel also announced further measures to prevent other ship-source pollution in Canadian waters.
Canada Aims for 'World-class' Tankship Safety System
Canada acts to upgrade its safety system for shipping oil & liquefied natural gas safely through Canada’s waterways before any major new energy export facilities become operational. Tanker inspections: The number of inspections will increase to ensure that all foreign tankers are inspected on their first visit to Canada, and annually thereafter, to ensure they comply with rules and regulations, especially with respect to double hulls. Systematic surveillance and monitoring of ships: The government will expand the National Aerial Surveillance Program (NASP).
Canada Commissions Maritime Pollution Risk Study
Harper government announces pan-Canadian risk assessment study on marine safety. The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced that Transport Canada, in collaboration with the Canadian Coast Guard and Environment Canada, is commissioning a pan-Canadian risk assessment study on readiness to respond to ship-source spills in Canadian waters. “Our government is working to protect the safety of Canadians and the environment,” said Minister Lebel. “Canada depends on marine shipping for jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity.
Canada Commits to Boating Safety
The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, has announced additional funding for the Boating Safety Class Contribution Program. The renewed program, now called the 'Boating Safety Contribution Program' (BSCP), will continue to provide financial contributions to organizations that promote boating safety in Canada and will increase in 2014 to support more initiatives across the country. We are increasing our commitment to boating safety," said Minister Lebel. In addition, Minister Lebel announced the call for proposals under the BSCP for education and awareness projects that promote safe boating practices during the 2013 boating season. Applications for next year's projects will be accepted until November 1, 2012.
