Miami shipyard RMK Merrill-Stevens says it is hiring 75 new employees over the next two months to staff its newly renovated North Yard and South Yard. The hiring campaign follows years full of updates after Rahmi M. Koç, a Turkish philanthropist, purchased the shipyard in 2013 while committing to restore the yard to its former glory. The Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, today announced the appointment of 10 Board Members to the Naval Shipbuilding Advisory Board, chaired by Professor Donald Winter. “The establishment of the Advisory Board is an important milestone in the Government’s naval shipbuilding strategy, ensuring expert, independent advice to Government on all aspects of this historical national endeavour,” Minister Pyne said. The UK Chamber of Shipping and the  Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) jointly hosted an Apprenticeship Seminar on the 11th October. The purpose of the event was to brief attendees from the industry about the Apprenticeship Levy and how apprenticeships can play a role in the shipping industry. The Levy which will come into effect in April 2016, has caused a great deal of concern across industry due to lack of clarity around how the levy may be implemented, how companies already training or looking to train apprentices might be affected and the potential differences in how the Levy will be implemented in England and the devolved regions. Recent guidelines from the Department for Education have begun to provide clarity on some of these issues.

Thousands of U.S. schools sit along rail corridors used to carry toxic substances such as crude oil and would be at risk in the event of a derailment, an environmental group said on Tuesday as it called for a temporary halt on oil trains. ForestEthics said its analysis of U.S. Department of Education data show nearly 15,000 schools with 5.7 million students sit inside the so-called 'blast zone', the one-mile area along railroad tracks the U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) recommends be evacuated in case of crashes. The DoT moved in May to lower maximum speeds to 40 miles per hours in cities, phase out older tank cars that can puncture, have carriers use safer routes, and require better brakes after a string of accidents.

Irving Shipbuilding has partnered with Women Unlimited to provide education funding and job opportunities to 20 women who will participate in the welding and metal fabrication program at the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) Akerley Campus. The partnership is an outcome of Irving Shipbuilding's Centre of Excellence funding announced in October 2012. The mandate of the Centre of Excellence is to provide Nova Scotians, with particular focus on under-represented Nova Scotians, with applicable programs and training to optimize opportunities to work in the marine industry.

Crowley Liner Services is in the process of transporting one 20-ft. flatbed and one 20-ft. unique satellite equipment from Houston, Texas to Panama as part of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute's Jason Project, a research and learning series on rainforests. The cargo departed Houston by ship on Jan. 2 and is expected to arrive in Panama January 9. Crowley was chosen for the job by Total Export of Florida Inc. and Leblanc Enterprises, Ltd. The satellite, which is the only one like it in the world, required careful handling by Crowley and was secured onto the vessel for transport with hooks and wires. June 11, 2004 was a very big day for the advancement of maritime training as the Pacific Maritime Institute (PMI) introduced its full mission simulator in a new 15,000 sq. ft. building in Seattle, Wash. Gregg Trunnell, PMI's director set the tone for the day when he said during dedication remarks, "Oceangoing vessels are not simple pieces of equipment and the days of cabin boys and shanghaied crew members are over. Trunnell also noted that maritime schools are few and far between and often students had to travel to a number of states to get a single certification. "With the opening of this new facility, those days are gone forever for mariners in the Pacific northwest," Trunnell noted.

Crowley Maritime Corporation has presented a Thomas B. Crowley, Sr. Memorial Scholarship to InterAmerican University student Juan Xavier Berrios Guzman, from Barranquitas. Crowley has awarded 24 scholarships totaling tens of thousands of dollars to deserving students in Puerto Rico since 1984. Students are selected for the scholarship by the Puerto Rico Department of Education based on academic success and financial need. Berrios will pursue a bachelor's degree in accounting with the long-term goal of becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He expressed his gratitude to Crowley for helping him get through college and was captivated by Crowley's scope and diversity of services, which immediately generated aspirations to join the company following his graduation.
