IMO Workshop on NMTP in Caribbean

The Caribbean Country of Saint Kitts and Nevis is the latest country to benefit from International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s work promoting good maritime governance practice – through a National Maritime Transport Policy (NMTP) workshop, underway in Basseterre (14-16 May).The event brought together participants from over 30 institutions, including ministries, State and stakeholder agencies to work towards a policy to help achieve the maritime vision of Saint Kitts and Nevis.Creating a NMPT policy will help the country’s maritime transport sector to be governed in a coordinated, efficient, sustainable, safe and environmentally-sound…

India, Indonesia to Promote Bilateral Cooperation in Maritime

Taking ahead the bilateral relations between India & Republic of Indonesia, Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Shipping met General (Retd.) Luhut Binser Pandjaitan, Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs of Indonesia, in New Delhi. Ahead of the visit of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Jakarta in May 2018, General (Retd.) Pandjaitan, who is on a 2-day visit to India met Shri Gadkari to discuss bilateral cooperation in the maritime sector between the two countries. The bilateral talks covered a wide range of topics including river rejuvenation, wastewater treatment, generating revenue streams from waste, enhancing shipping linkages between the two countries, developing ports and airports, training on light house technology and development of navigational aids.

Piracy Pact Supports SKANReg Quality Strides

St Kitts & Nevis has become the latest of five flag state signatories to the Washington declaration condemning acts of violence against seafarers - joining Bahamas, Liberia, Marshall Islands and Panama. The move underpins major quality initiatives by the London-based St Kitts & Nevis International Ship Registry (SKANReg), which has achieved further improvements in Port State Control (PSC) performance and is now preparing for the Voluntary IMO Member State Audit Scheme (VIMSAS). Meanwhile, in another milestone, the St Kitts & Nevis department of maritime affairs has just hosted the annual meeting of the Caribbean Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control (CMOU). MV Mark Twain Given Green Light

The MV Mark Twain is sailing the high seas again. The Department of Maritime Affairs has informed the general public that the MV Mark Twain had been cleared to resume its regular ferry schedule between St. Kitts and Nevis as of yesterday. The MV Mark Twain, which was detained by the department on 10 Oct., to rectify outstanding safety deficiencies, has corrected those deficiencies and has been declared safe to recommence its service. According to the Department of Maritime Affairs, all regulations to ensure the safety of passengers will be enforced on all vessels operating in the coastal waters of St. Kitts and Nevis. by Corliss Smithen
