The Canadian Coast Guard's (CCG) annual icebreaking season on the Great Lakes, which provides assistance to the shipping industry, is underway. Working in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) District 9, the CCG has two icebreakers assigned to the Great Lakes for the entire winter season: CCGS Griffon and CCGS Samuel Risley. BMT Fleet Technology Ltd., a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd., an international maritime design, engineering and risk management consultancy, has announced the appointment of Darcy Byrtus as President. Darcy joins BMT from General Dynamics Canada where he held the post of Director of Business Development for Naval Programs and Project Management. There, he was responsible for the strategic planning, opportunity identification and pursuit for all naval programs and for the promotion of General Dynamics’ capabilities to the Canadian Department of National Defence.

United States Ship (USS) Michael Murphy arrived today alongside Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, with 19 family members and civilian contractors transferred off Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Protecteur, five days after a fire onboard, informs Canada's Department of National Defence. HMCS Protecteur remains under tow approximately 150 nautical miles northeast of Pearl Harbor. A team of RCN personnel has arrived in Pearl Harbor. This team will provide technical support to HMCS Protecteur’s crew members and assist family members who are arriving on USS Michael Murphy.

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has been selected by Canada's Department of National Defence (DND) to provide in-service support for the MK-49 inertial navigation systems and navigation data distribution systems fielded aboard surface ships and submarines of the Royal Canadian Navy. The $12.1 million contract, awarded by Public Works Government Services Canada, includes material spares and software maintenance for the next five years. This is the fourth in-service support contract that Northrop Grumman has received from the DND since 2001.

BMT Fleet Technology will commence work to enable the decommissioned submarine, HMCS Ojibwa to become the centrepiece at the new Elgin Military Museum of Naval History being built in Port Burwell, Ontario. Ojibwa has completed its route from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to its temporary home in Hamilton, Ontario where it has been transferred to a shallow-draft barge and is currently being fitted with permanent cradles, designed by the BMT project team. Other engineering work such as the safe removal of any hazardous material will ensure the vessel’s integrity before it embarks upon its final journey to the museum in early September 2012. OceanWorks International To Deliver A-Frame Template for Submarine Rescue to Royal Canadian Navy. OceanWorks International has been awarded a contract by the Canadian Department of National Defense for another key piece of equipment which will enable submarine rescue cooperation and interoperability with the U.S. Navy. The A-Frame Template Kit is designed to work along with the Ship Interface Template Set (SITS) previously delivered to the Department of National Defence by OceanWorks International in March of 2010.

The Elgin Military Museum in St. Thomas, Ontario, announced its partnership with BMT Fleet Technology Ltd, a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, the leading international maritime design, engineering and risk management consultancy. As the assigned project manager, BMT Fleet Technology will be responsible for the evaluation, movement and mounting of the decommissioned submarine HMCS Ojibwa from its current location in Dartmouth Nova Scotia to its new home in Ontario. HMCS Ojibwa, an Oberon Class submarine will become a museum and learning centre. “This is an exciting opportunity for BMT Fleet Technology to support the preservation of Canada’s naval heritage. I am delighted that we are able to use our knowledge and experience built up over many years working with the Canadian Navy.

July 27 marked the opening of the Government of Canada's Shipbuilding Consultation, which seeks input from key stakeholders on comprehensive and viable options for a long-term, sustainable Canadian shipbuilding strategy. The Government is committed to building and maintaining an effective federal fleet of ships for maritime security and services. Fleet renewal plans could see the Government invest in excess of $40 billion to build more than 50 large vessels over the next 30 years.

A Halifax Provincial Court Judge has imposed a penalty of $80,000 against the Motor Vessel Alida Gorthon for a pollution offense. The Alida Gorthon is a 12,750 GRT general cargo vessel owned by Blow Sea Shipping Ltd. and registered in Cyprus. The vessel faced charges under the Canada Shipping Act related to the unlawful discharge of a pollutant and failure to report the discharge of a pollutant. The charges were laid following a June 22, 2007 pollution incident in which an oil slick of less than 13 gallons was spotted in the vessel's wake, approximately 124 miles south of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Advanced detection equipment aboard Transport Canada's Dash 8 surveillance aircraft was instrumental in detecting and gathering evidence in the case against the vessel.

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been awarded two contracts from the Public Works and Government Services Canada and the Canadian Department of National Defence to upgrade and provide in-service support for the inertial navigation systems (INS) on Canadian Navy ships and submarines. The firm fixed price contracts, totaling $15.9m, were awarded to Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine business unit. They include an $11.8m contract to supply navigation data distribution systems (NDDS) for the MK49 INS on 12 Halifax-class frigates, and a separate five-year $4.1 million in-service support (ISS) contract for MK49, MK39 and NDDS installations throughout the Canadian Navy fleet.

OSI Geospatial Inc. announced that its international systems business has been awarded a support contract with the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) valued at a more than $4.0 million, including all options. The contract has a fixed provision of approximately $1.7 million over three years and an optional provision of up to $2.3 million over four years. Under the terms of the contract, OSI will provide the Canadian Navy with hardware and software support and maintenance. The Canadian Navy currently deploys OSI’s Warship Electronic Chart and Display Information System (WECDIS) product on more than 50 vessels fleet-wide. OSI delivered the first electronic chart navigation system to the Canadian Navy in 1985. Fleet installations began in 1997 and continued in 2001.

Transport Minister David Collenette today announced that the federal government has successfully prosecuted the M/V Cala Palamos, a Cypriot-registered container vessel, owned by Nordpartner of Limassol, Cyprus and operated by Oldendorff K.E., based in Limassol, Cyprus, for the Canada Shipping Act (CSA) violation of unlawfully discharging an oily substance into Canadian waters. The pollution incident occurred while the vessel was berthed at Pier 36, in the Port of Halifax, on February 21, 2002. A Newfoundland and Labrador provincial court judge has ordered the Motor Vessel (MV) Project Europa to pay a $70,000 penalty for violations of the Canada Shipping Act associated with the unlawful discharge of an oily substance into Canadian waters. On August 23, 2003, a Government of Canada marine pollution surveillance flight detected a slick in the wake of MV Project Europa, a cargo ship registered in the Netherlands and owned by Biglift Goedkoop B.V.of Amsterdam. At the time, the vessel was approximately 65 miles south of Cape Race, NL and was traveling from Spain towards Montreal. Transport Canada Marine Safety in St. John's, NL made arrangements for the ship to be boarded at Trois-Rivières, Québec.

On June 22, 2004, a routine Transport Canada marine pollution surveillance flight detected three slicks in the wake of the MV Front Fighter (now known as the Nordic Fighter). The pollution incident was detected approximately 85 miles southwest of Cape St. Mary’s, NL. The Front Fighter was traveling from Yorktown, Virginia toward Whiffen Head, Newfoundland and Labrador at the time. Upon its arrival at Whiffen Head on June 23…
