The Canadian Coast Guard’s annual icebreaking season on the Great Lakes, which provides assistance to the shipping industry, is underway. Working in partnership with U.S. Coast Guard District 9, the Canadian Coast Guard has two icebreakers assigned to the Great Lakes for the entire winter season: CCGS Griffon and CCGS Samuel Risley. Canada’s first Resolve-Class Naval Support Ship, Asterix, has been formally accepted by the Department of National Defense and has now entered full operational service with the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) following a period of at-sea trials and testing, announced Davie Shipbuilding and Federal Fleet Services. Asterix performed daily replenishment-at-sea (RAS) exercises with the RCN and conducted extensive RCAF CH-148 Cyclone helicopter operations to prove and demonstrate the capabilities of the Resolve-Class Naval Support Ship.

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has signed a contract to build two 2,600 ton frigates with the Department of National Defense, Republic of the Philippines. The frigates, scheduled to be delivered from 2020, will be a smaller light combatant and successor to the Incheon class frigate now in active service for ROKN, and tailored to the requirements of the Philippine Navy with an optimized range of good marine standards under rules from Lloyd Register. Seaspan joined Harjit S. Sajjan, Canada’s Minister of National Defense, at an official ceremony today to celebrate the completion of the Halifax-Class Modernization/Frigate Life Extension (HCM/FELEX) Refit Program on the West Coast, and transfer of the HMCS Regina from Seaspan’s Victoria Shipyards (VSL) to the Department of National Defense (DND) Dockyard. HMCS Regina is the fifth and final frigate to undergo modernization on the West Coast for the $4.3 billion HCM/FELEX Program. VSL has served as Canada’s capability partner on the West Coast under HCM/FELEX since 2008, providing mid-life maintenance activities, machinery control and combat equipment upgrades for the HMCS Calgary, HMCS Winnipeg, HMCS Vancouver, HMCS Ottawa and HMCS Regina.

Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Toronto arrived in her home port of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Jan. 18, after seven months in the Mediterranean Sea region as part of Operation REASSURANCE, the Department of National Defense said. Dozens of people held yellow balloons and homemade signs, as ice-clad HMCS Toronto docked in Halifax harbor. Operation REASSURANCE is Canada’s response to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and Russia’s military moves in the region. HMCS Fredericton has replaced HMCS Toronto on Operation, part of Canada’s contribution to NATO assurance measures, which promote security and stability in Central and Eastern Europe. “I would like to congratulate the crew of HMCS Toronto on their accomplishments during this past deployment,” says Justice Minister Peter MacKay.

Irving Shipbuilding’s successful C$25 billion bid for the combatant portion of the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS) illustrates the strength of Nova Scotia shipbuilding industry. Under the program, Irving Shipbuilding, Inc. (ISI) will build six to eight Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ships and 15 Canadian Surface Combatants for the Department of National Defense (DND) over the next 20-30 years. OceanWorks International To Deliver A-Frame Template for Submarine Rescue to Royal Canadian Navy. OceanWorks International has been awarded a contract by the Canadian Department of National Defense for another key piece of equipment which will enable submarine rescue cooperation and interoperability with the U.S. Navy. The A-Frame Template Kit is designed to work along with the Ship Interface Template Set (SITS) previously delivered to the Department of National Defence by OceanWorks International in March of 2010.

STX Canada Marine Awarded Contract to Design the Canadian Coast Guard’s New Polar Icebreaker. STX Canada Marine is pleased to announce that they have been awarded the contract to design the new polar icebreaker for the Canadian Coast Guard. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans announced today the award on behalf of the Government of Canada. The work will be carried out at STX Canada Marine’s Vancouver office and be completed by the end of 2013. The polar icebreaker will be named after former Prime Minister John George Diefenbaker (CCGS John G. Diefenbaker).

The Canadian Department of National Defense (DND) has a requirement for the construction, test, trial and delivery of one (1) aluminum, water jet propelled Range Patrol Vessel for operations in Nanoose British Columbia on the Canadian Forces Maritime Experimental Test Range. Late last year, six of Eastern Canada's front-running shipbuilding, ship repair and fabrication outfits combined forces under the new name of Irving Shipbuilding. Along with the addition of two affiliates, the new company has invested more than $135 million in new facilities and equipment over the past 10 years. Beginning with Halifax Shipyard, upgrades include expansion of the yard's assembly hall for accommodation of the joining pre-outfitted sub-assemblies. Halifax's lifting facilities, slipways, wharfage and waterfront have also undergone refurbishment. The shipyard is currently involved with the building of Ulstein Anchor Handling/Tug/Supply Vessels.

Offshore Systems International Ltd. - a leader in electronic charts and positioning systems for the maritime industry -- announced that Offshore's Electronic Chart Precise Integrated Navigation System (ECPINS) has been validated by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) of the U.S. Department of Defense for "proper and complete" display of NIMA Digital Nautical Chart (DNC) in Vector Product Format (VPF). DNC is the official electronic chart used by the U.S. Navy. Earlier this year, NIMA completed digitization of the worldwide DNC coverage required by the United States Navy for military use. The Canadian Department of National Defense (DND) requires the capability to operate with DNC charts, and initiated the development and test program with Offshore.

General Dynamics’ Canadian subsidiary, General Dynamics Canada, was awarded a contract valued at $128 million by the Canadian Department of National Defense to supply and integrate a new data management system for the CP-140 Aurora, Canada’s long-range maritime patrol aircraft, as part of the ongoing Aurora Incremental Modernization Project (AIMP). Under the contract, General Dynamics Canada will supply a new mission computer, integrate upgraded sensors, and provide ground facilities and logistics support. The General Dynamics-designed data management system will provide the enhanced capability and flexibility required to allow the CP-140 Aurora to fulfill its surface and undersea surveillance roles. Work will be completed in Ottawa and Halifax.

Two warships of the Royal Australian Navy are due to arrive in Manila on Friday for a weeklong joint training with their Philippine counterparts, said the Philippine Navy Thursday. The HMAS Newcastle and HMAS Darwin would join the training activities with the Philippine Navy and the Philippine Coast Guard dubbed Maritime Training Activity Lumbas, according reports. Australian Customs Service would also take part in exercise which are composed mostly of shore-based training in Manila and would conclude with a combined sea passage. The exercise is not a full-blown joint military exercise due to the absence of a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) between the two countries.
