Lines (MOL) announced that six MOL-operated/managed vessels have received commendations from the commanders of the 3rd and 4th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters of the Japan Coast Guard (JCG).Vessels commended by 3rd Regional Coast Guard Headquarters are: VLCC Altair Trader, VLCC Yufusan, VLCC M. Star, LNG carrier Energy Advance, and LNG carrier Energy Frontier. The Captain of the Port for Oregon and southern Washington canceled the captain of the port order on the motor vessel Sparna allowing the vessel to leave its mooring at Kalama, Wash., Monday. The Sparna, a 623-foot bulk grain carrier, briefly ran aground near Cathlamet on the Columbia River, March 21, resulting in the ship needing to undergo temporary repairs. “We have inspected the Sparna and have approved the temporary repairs to make the vessel seaworthy,” said Lt. Cmdr. Ben Russell, chief inspections department, Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Portland.

Approximately 120 people were injured when a high-speed jetfoil heading from Macau towards Hong Kong hit an “unidentified object” last night south of Lantau Island. The injured, aged between six and 83, were sent to seven hospitals, with 87 discharged as of this morning. In addition to the five patients in critical condition, five were categorised as serious and 27 stable. Over 170 people on board the ferry lost power after colliding with an "unidentified object" in the water, according to the boat's operator, Shun Tak. The local media quoted passengers who described there being chaos after the crash. Council has approved a resolution that may lead to the Huntington Fire Department obtaining a marine firefighting & hazardous material vessel through a Port Security grant. Huntington has the nation’s largest inland port. A century ago this year, the first ocean-going diesel ship in the world, the M/S Selandia, embarked on her maiden voyage. She was a technological wonder, and both her hull and engines were built by Burmeister & Wain (B&W) of Copenhagen, Denmark. B&W is now a part of MAN Diesel & Turbo — a company with 12,000 employees worldwide — and the marine low-speed business unit is located in Copenhagen. The unit has capitalized on B&W’s historic expertise to produce new engines that can weigh up to 2,800 metric tons and tower 16 meters high.

Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS), a maritime services provider, has created a dedicated US Gulf Documentation Department to meet customer demand for a centralized and streamlined service to handle cargo documentation for import and export activity. The new department will provide expert oversight and guidance for the specific documentation functions that remain in US Gulf ports and provide customers with the best advice and support. Companies already benefiting from the department include Tokyo Marine Europe, Gearbulk and Grieg Star. ISS will now be expanding the service to further key customers with activity across the US Gulf. The port of Rotterdam is a major trading location, the source of around 88 percent of all bunker fuel. A study conducted by the scientific institute CE Delft last year showed some ocean-going vessels were bunkered by fuel oil contaminated with hazardous waste materials. Fuel oil "naturally" contains a variety of hazardous substances in high concentrations.

Shipbridge announced as new distributing partner. VSTEP, in cooperation with its distributing partner Shipbridge, have successfully delivered and installed a NAUTIS desktop simulator at the National Taiwan Ocean University in Keelung, Taiwan. The Ocean University is a leading institute for maritime education and oceanographic studies in Taiwan. It also harbours the department of merchant marine and the department of shipping & transportation management. After careful evaluation of the simulator market, the Taiwan Ocean University selected NAUTIS for its high quality and efficient maritime simulation and training, combined with superior visuals and affordability. The simulator will be used to train university maritime students and maritime professionals in shiphandling and manoeuvring.

Signal Ship Repair Wins Bid to Repair U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hopper Dredge WHEELER. Signal Ship Repair (SSR), a division of Signal International, Inc., competitively bid and won a contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to repair and repower the Hopper Dredge WHEELER. SSR will provide engineering and marine services to perform engine replacement, auxiliary systems modifications, repair work, and testing of the Dredge WHEELER for the Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District. The eleven-month project will commence in February with phase one pre-planning, engineering, and scheduling portion. The second phase begins in July with the Dredge WHEELER on the SSR drydock for capital improvements…

SeaArk Marine, Inc. has delivered a 26-ft Utility Series (Little Giant) all-welded aluminum fire/rescue boat to the Wilder, KY Fire Department. The boat features a heavy duty “cathedral” multi-vee hull that produces a fast, smooth, dry ride and provides a stable fire fighting platform. These characteristics were high priority items required by the Wilder Fire Department in order to meet required fast response times and capability for all-weather fire fighting and maneuvering requirements. The boat is tasked for fire/rescue missions on the Licking River and surrounding waters.

Mission Marine, a Sandusky boat-builder, delivered its Mission 288 to the Port Clinton Police Department in Ohio. The 25-ft. boat with a wide 11.5-ft. beam was purchased with a Port Security Grant awarded by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The police department needed a multi-mission boat with the ideal platform, superb stability, large deck space, great maneuverability and ride to assist the critical missions of the police department. The department chose Mission Marine. The ISPS (International Ship and Port Security) and the U.S. maritime security requirements mandate security assessments, plans and training of security personnel. The Maritime Institute of Technology (MITAGS) and its satellite school, the Pacific Maritime Institute (PMI) offer training for port facility, shipping company and ship security officers. MITAGS/PMI is now offering training for Maritime Security Professionals.The ISPS Code, the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) of 2002 and in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) mandate training for port facility personnel with specific security duties.
