Today’s desalination plants are rugged, durable and highly automated to meet the demands of operators and the crew, enabling them to meet schedule and mission with ample potable water production.In the days of old, marine distilling plants – then mostly steam – relied on archaic flash evaporators, which used steam to heat, power an air ejector, and ultimately create a vacuum whereby seawater would flash or boil and ultimately be distilled. The process would often occur over two stages and what did not flash would be pumped overboard as brine. Times have changed.

Almarin navigation buoys are being installed in a growing number of markets both in Europe and further afield, proving the effectiveness of their simple reliable design with the use of high quality materials manufactured in Europe. In the Léman lake, border between France and Switzerland, buoys have been installed to mark a floating containment boom in the estuary of Rhone river, nearby Port Valais. The Balizamar buoys used in this case were adapted by the customer for this application.

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth around $85 million to provide turnkey substations to help integrate electricity from a new independent water and power plant (IWPP) into the country’s grid. The IWPP will utilize Qatar’s natural gas resources to produce 2,520 megawatts (MW) of power and desalination capacity of around 600 million liters of water daily, helping supply drinking water and power to one of the economic zones that Qatar has made a centerpiece of its plans to modernize and diversify its economy. Qatar, on a peninsula east of Saudi Arabia, is building ambitious infrastructure including rail, energy and water desalination facilities.

Wave energy developer Carnegie Wave Energy Limited has provided an update on the recent progress of the Perth Wave Energy Project. Carnegie has made significant progress on the assembly and testing stage of the Perth Wave Energy Project in advance of the project’s final commissioning and operation phase. Noteworthy recent progress includes the completion of the offshore preparations in advance of the deployment of the CETO unit, completion of construction of the onshore plant including installation of all power generation and conditioning equipment on Garden Island, and nearing completion of the testing of the CETO units. Over the past months, Carnegie has been working through a rigorous program of integration testing of the CETO units in advance of offshore installation and commissioning.

Elcome International, the marine solutions provider and system integrator in the Middle East and one of the largest marine technology suppliers in the world, recently completed replacement and upgrade of a 15 MW electrical distribution and automation system on a water desalination barge. The vessel, Bowarege 2, is a rapidly deployable barge-mounted reverse-osmosis desalination plant owned and operated by International Barges Company (IBC) for water desalination in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Built in 2008, Bowarege 2 has capacity to produce 25,000 cubic meters of potable water per day. A major fire ripped through the barge and totally destroyed the barge’s accommodation block (which housed the switchgear room) and three of the nine genset containers. Goltens Co.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), India’s largest port developer and part of the Adani Group, today said it had received the environment and coastal regulation zone clearance from the Union Ministry for Environment and Forests, for its 8,481 hectares special economic zone in Mundra. The clearance will now allow APSEZ, which operates India’s only port-based SEZ, to set up a mega desalination plant, an effluent treatment plant and intake of sea water, all of which constitute primary infrastructure to be provided for companies setting up business units in the special economic zone. The Special Economic Zones are locations carved out from within the country, which are treated as deemed foreign territories from perspective of several economic laws.

Foster Wheeler AG (Nasdaq:FWLT) announced today that a subsidiary of its Global Power Group has been awarded two contracts for the design and supply of five steam condensers and thirty feed-water heaters for Saline Water Conversion Corporation’s (SWCC) Yanbu Power and Desalination Plant, Phase 3, located in Saudi Arabia. The contracts were signed with a consortium led by Al-Toukhi Company for Industry, Trade and Construction (AT) for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the plant. Foster Wheeler will design and supply condensers and feed-water heaters for the five super critical boilers at the plant. Each unit requires a condenser as well as three high-pressure and three low-pressure feed-water heaters.

Hastings Funds Management and China Merchants Group have won a state government auction for a 98-year lease on Australia's Port of Newcastle, the world's biggest coal export terminal, paying a higher-than-expected A$1.75 billion ($1.6 billion). An initial New South Wales state budget plan had valued the lease on the port terminal at A$700 million, but fierce competition for Australian infrastructure assets coming on to market has seen a steady rise in multiples paid. The winning bid for Newcastle port came in at 27 times earnings, matching the 27 times earnings Transurban Group, Australia's biggest toll road owner, paid last week for a Queensland state toll road firm.

Terminal management and planning software solutions provider Tideworks Technology says that Koniambo Nickel SAS (KNS) in Koné, New Caledonia, has selected Tideworks to implement its terminal operating system (TOS) solutions for its new container operations. Established near the New Caledonia North Province county town of Koné, KNS is developing a world-class industrial complex that will help New Caledonia become one of the world's largest nickel producers. It is working to exploit a nickel deposit that is ranked one of the most important and of the best quality worldwide. The KNS project, which will go live in Q4 2013, includes deployment of Tideworks’ Spinnaker Planning Management System® and its Traffic Control™ equipment dispatch system.

By all accounts, Bahrain-based ASRY (Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard) is managing to buck the trend of falling revenues and create an optimistic story for the Middle East ship repair industry. It is also resisting the regional trend of falling revenues and increased losses with a 6% increase year-on-year in revenues as well as staying profitable, according to the yard. The secret to the yard’s success is actually no secret at all and has been reported previously in these pages.

Many marine service companies are acquiring boat-towed metal detectors and magnetometers to assist in salvage operations and geophysical surveys. These devices can locate a variety of targets including sunken vessels, ship anchors and propellers, pipelines, cables and metal debris which must be removed from an area before dredging. The two primary pieces of equipment used in these operations are a magnetometer and the pulse induction (PI) metal detector. Magnetometers are super sensitive instruments that can detect iron and steel objects at hundreds of feet away.

Bahrain’s Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard (ASRY) has come a long way since starting operations towards the end of 1977, as the Arabian Gulf’s first VLCC repair yard. Today ASRY is involved in the repair of all types of commercial vessels, naval craft and offshore jack-up rigs. It also has an expanding newbuilding division which has built specialist barges as well as completing four new tugs for its own use. Wilhelmsen Ships Service (WSS) Saudi has been appointed by the new Ras Al Zawr port in Saudi Arabia LPG/C Al Barrah as the first agent to be issued a license of operation to load ammonia. Ras Al Zawr is one of the six new ports planned by the Saudi Government as they realize their goal of economic expansion and diversification. Construction of the integrated chemical and fertilizer facility and related infrastructure for the Phosphate Project has been completed recently for clients and operators Maaden and SABIC. Phosphate concentrate will be transported by rail from the Al Jalamid mine site some 1200km to Ras Al Zawr for processing.

The RWO Company is supplying a complete reverse osmosis plant for seawater desalination to the international oil and gas concern Total for its Girassol project. The Girassol, the world's biggest floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) ship, is stationed 150km off the coast of Angola in Block 17 of the oilfield. The Bremen company's desalination plant will be installed aboard the FPSO in the next few weeks and guarantee reliable and independent water supply. FBM Babcock Marine, in partnership with licensed shipyard partner Astilleros De Murueta, was awarded a contract for the construction of three 45 m (150 ft.) patrol vessels for the Coast Guard Command of the Armada de Ecuador (Ecuador Navy). The Armada de Ecuador announced that Astilleros De Murueta, using the FBM Babcock Marine Vigilante patrol vessel, was selected as their choice for their new fleet of patrol vessels. The Vigilante patrol vessel is a registered design from the FBM Protector class, designed as a reliable, capable but cost-effective patrol vessel.

Leaders are touting development of Pakistan's first deep-sea port at Gwadar as a potentially potent engine for trade and other economic growth in the region, reported UPI. Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz spoke at a ceremony marking the start-up of the nation's first desalination plant financed entirely from private sources. He added the new deep-water port will eventually be linked to Iran, the Pakistan Dawn newspaper reported. Aziz acknowledged that some of his countrymen are concerned that the port expansion project, which is to start next month, will draw people from other countries, changing Gwadar's demographics.
