Steel Cut for CIMC ORIC's First FORAN Project

The steel cutting ceremony of the first project designed with the FORAN system by CIMC Ocean Engineering Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd. (CIM ORIC) was held in the Chinese shipyard Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard Co., Ltd. on September 23. CIMC ORIC is a subsidiary company of the Group CIMC which is dedicated to research on ship design and marine equipment. CIMC ORIC implemented the FORAN system in December 2015. After receiving FORAN training from SENER (Shanghai) Systems Co., Ltd., CIMC ORIC started to use FORAN to design a 1004 TEU container vessel.

Ulstein, SeaOwls Partner for Heavy-lift Jack-Up Design

Ulstein Design & Solutions B.V. (part of Ulstein Group) and SeaOwls B.V. are partnering to combine the former’s track record in heavy lift vessel design with the latter’s experience in jack-up technology and engineering to jointly develop the next generation self-propelled heavy lift jack-up vessel. The new design aims to serve the needs of offshore wind industry, but will also be suitable for operations in the offshore oil and gas market. Rather than developing a scaled-up version of a conventional heavy lift jack-up vessel, a complete new design is being developed by the two companies.

Japan Grants Patent for EnergySail

The Japan Patent Office has granted a patent to Eco Marine Power (EMP) for its innovative EnergySail technology, an advanced rigid sail device that can be fitted with a range of renewable energy technologies such as solar panels or wind power devices. Edison Chouest to Build 13 Damen Tugs

Marine transportation provider and the United States’ largest operator of OSVs, Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO), has teamed up with Damen to build 13 heavy duty mooring assistance and escort tugs. The vessels will be built in the U.S. using ECO’s network of five shipyards with support from Damen under its Technical Cooperation program. The new tugs will be deployed on two major maritime projects for which ECO has recently won contracts. The first of these is a contract that ECO won earlier this year with a new Corpus Christi based LNG export terminal.

The ITB Marine Group Ltd. (ITB) is currently well into construction of the first of two, twin Z-drive, ATB pusher tugs for service on the West Coast of North America. The tugs are being built at their Annacis Island Shipyard near Vancouver. The tugs will be connected by an articulating pin system to the existing double-hulled oil barges ITB Reliant and ITB Resolution which will receive retrofitted pin ladders and stern extensions for connecting to the new tugs. ITB had a well-defined statement of requirements for the tugs and a relatively clear vision of the desired layout.

ClassNK Issues AIP for LNG Bunkering Vessel Design

Classification society ClassNK has issued Approval in Principle (AIP) for a 7,500 cbm LNG bunkering vessel designed by Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd. This design is the result of joint research carried out by Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd. and ClassNK to improve the efficiency of LNG bunkering vessels. The choice of LNG as ship fuel has become increasingly prevalent in the industry, and is expected to become one of a primary source of fuel in the near future.

Towboat Delivered to Gateway Dredging

Gateway Dredging has taken delivery of a 55’ 1,200 HP twin screw conventional towboat. The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI) provided the design and engineering services to JB Marine Service, Inc. where the towboat was constructed in St. Louis, Mo. The vessel was designed to ABS rules for Building and Classing Steel Vessels for Service on Rivers and Intracoastal Waterways. Radio Holland Supplies Communications for Weir Complexes

Radio Holland’s Mission Critical Communications (MCC) department is responsible for the design, supply and commissioning of the communications system for the Nederrijn and Lek weir complex. This complex, consisting of three hydraulic structures, will be subjected to a major renovation. The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure (Rijkswaterstaat) awarded the contract for this programme to Siemens in late 2015. Siemens had included the communications system designed by Radio Holland in its tender bid.

Lind Marine Acquires Moose Boats

Lind Marine, a Petaluma, Calif. dredging contractor which provides tug and barge services throughout the San Francisco Bay area, has acquired Moose Boats, an aluminum commercial boat building company. Lind Marine currently operates a five-acre shipyard including a 430ft dry-dock and 1,600-ft of linear pier on Mare Island in Vallejo, Calif. Lind Marine’s strategic acquisition of Moose Boats will ensure continuity of vessel production for the well-established patrol boat’s brand as well as complement a vertically integrated business model which Lind Marine has developed over the past century.

Damen Shipyards Group has unveiled its recently completed Expedition Cruise Vessel design, which resulted from its partnership with Expedition Voyage Consultants Ltd and the Danish Naval Architect firm Knud E. As the City of San Francisco commissions its latest fireboat today, the vessel, designed by Seattle-based Jensen Maritime Consultants, exemplifies the evolution and growth of the naval architecture and marine engineering firm since it was acquired by Crowley Maritime Corp. in 2008. “Eight years ago I’m not sure this project would have been in our sweet spot,” said Johan Sperling, vice president of Crowley’s marine solutions group, which includes Jensen. “But over the past eight years, Crowley has made a considerable effort to give us all the tools we need to expand into new areas.

C&C Marine and Repair Delivers Double Skin Tank Barge

The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI) announced the completion of a 200’ x 35’ x 12’ double skin tank barge.    TSGI was contracted by C&C Marine and Repair, LLC to provide contract design services. The barge is the first of a series of double skin tank barges that will be built by C&C Marine. It is a flush deck barge with externally framed tanks and classed as a Subchapter O, USCG, acid barge.

Vard Extends SCHOTTEL Propulsion Order

Having already secured the contract in early summer to fit 15 Vard design 9 21 module carriers, propulsion specialist SCHOTTEL has now also received a follow-up order to fit three further Vard design 9 28 vessels with 12 main and auxiliary units. The Norwegian Vard Group is building the first-mentioned 15 vessels for Topaz Energy and Marine, UAE, and the later three for KMTF, the National Maritime Republic of Kazakhstan. A total of 36 special variant SRP 340 Rudderpropellers (formerly SRP 1012) were ordered as the main propulsion units for all 18 carriers.

MPI Resolution’s Leg Extensions Raises Capabilities

MPI’s wind-turbine installation vessel (WTIV), MPI Resolution, is currently undergoing installation of leg extensions at the company’s Tees Offshore Base in Middlesbrough, UK. Following these modifications, MPI Resolution will be able to operate in water depths of up to 35m, depending upon the site-specific data. The Shipbuilder Sustainability Knowledge Base has been presented on sustainability day (10-10) to Salima Belha (member of the Dutch parliament) and Brigit Gijsbers (director of maritime affaires at Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment). The Dutch trade association Netherlands Maritime Technology (NMT) collected over 175 sustainable maritime solutions and selected 10 examples to spotlight in a sustainability maritime brochure. Among this 10 highlighted examples the Shipbuilder Sustainability Knowledge Base can be found.

USN to Commission LCS Detroit

The future Freedom-variant littoral combat ship USS Detroit (LCS 7) is pierside on Detroit's waterfront in preparation for its commissioning on Oct. 22, 2016. LCS-7 is the sixth U.S. ship named in honor of city of Detroit.

The Navy will commission its newest Freedom-variant littoral combat ship, Detroit (LCS 7), during an 11 a.m. EDT ceremony Saturday, Oct. 22 on Detroit's waterfront. Detroit is the sixth U.S. ship in our nation's history to be named in honor of city of Detroit. Adm. Phil Davidson, commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, will deliver the ceremony's principal address. Barbara Levin, wife of former U.S. Senator Carl Levin, serves as the ship's sponsor. Twiflex to Debut New TLB System at WorkBoat

Twiflex Ltd., a supplier of brakes and clutches to the marine industry, said it will launch its new TLB (Turning, Locking and Braking) system at WorkBoat International, November 30 to December 2, 2016 in New Orleans. Originally designed in-house by Twiflex, part of the Altra Industrial Motion Group, for icebreaking vessels, the TLB system has been further developed for a wider range of marine propulsion requirements to consolidate three separate interfaces (Turning, Locking and Braking) into one multifunctional solution.

Ellicott Tallies Three Custom Dredger Contracts

Ellicott Dredges, LLC announced contracts for three new custom-designed dredges, all scheduled to be delivered before the end of 2017. In the first instance a major international chemical company selected Ellicott to build a custom electric bucketwheel dredge to mine salt in a very hard digging application. The new dredge, which will increase the mine’s output per operating hour and reduce its cost per ton of salt produced, will become the mine’s primary dredge. The salt will be used as feedstock for various chemical products such as chlorine based PVC.

CMA CGM and ENGIE signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote LNG as the marine fuel for tomorrow’s container vessels. Farid Salem, Executive Officer of the CMA CGM Group, and Isabelle Kocher, CEO of ENGIE, signed the agreement today at the Marseille headquarters of CMA CGM. * A study about the development of engineering specifications for a bunkering vessel adapted to LNG powered container ships, so as to improve over time the logistics chain necessary to fueling this type of vessels, thus promoting their deployment.
