Sirius Orders Two Oil/Chemical Tankers

Sirius Shipping AB has ordered two oil/chemical tankers with the latest technology and in compliance with future rules and regulations, such as Tier III, at Avic Dingheng shipyard. This is the 5th project that FKAB signes in less than a year, on a tanker project.The design is developed in cooperation between FKAB and Sirius and it started already in 2012, under the name “EVOlution.” The design with a gas-ready two-stroke engine, is based on proven hull lines, to reduce the fuel consumption to be one of the most efficient vessel in its segment.

Vard Holdings Limited said a design developed by its subsidiary Vard Marine was selected for the U.S. Coast Guard’s new Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) program. Eastern Shipbuilding Group and team partners were selected for the detailed design and construction phase for the U.S. Coast Guard’s Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) program. Terex Port Solutions (TPS) has obtained design approval for Terex Gottwald Model 8 floating cranes in the G HPK 8200 B four-rope grab variant operated on the open sea. This was necessary because the Lloyd's Register Code for Lifting Appliances in a Marine Environment has changed since the initial approval of the machines in 2007. The design of the crane, which offers an outreach of maximum 50 m, a 63 t grab curve and lifting speeds of up to 140 m/min, has also been completely reworked in the meantime and adapted to the current Model 8 series standard.

Vigor Introduces Freezer Longliner Design

Vigor will unveil its new 142’ Freezer Longliner designed specifically for North Pacific fishing at this year's Pacific Marine Expo in Seattle, Wash. Based on an existing design by Marco Marine, the 142’ x 33.6’ x 14’ vessel has a fish hold capacity of 14,070 cu ft and a bait hold capacity of 1,900 cu ft. “A new class of longliners is a central need for the recapitalization of the North Pacific fishing fleet, but to get these vessels built fishermen need to know they can depend on the design—and it better be affordable,” explained Keith Whittemore, Vigor Executive VP of Business Development.

Kecsmar possesses many decades of experience working and designing in shipyards in all things high-speed and is a proven designer of high-speed passenger ferries, patrol boats, SAR, CTVs and more. “For many years John has been conducting research on aluminum, fatigue and welding and now AMC can benefit from his expertise,” said Rob Stewart, commercial director at AMC.

Vard Holdings Limited has secured a contract for the design and construction of two additional Module Carrier Vessels for Topaz Energy and Marine (“Topaz”). The vessels, of VARD 9 21 design and measuring 123 by 16.5 meters, are sister ships of a series of 15 identical Module Carrier Vessels previously contracted by Topaz for delivery from VARD’s shipyards in Tulcea and Braila in Romania, and Vung Tau in Vietnam. They will be operated by Topaz through a consortium led by Blue Water Shipping. One of the additional vessels will be built at Vard Braila and one at Vard Vung Tau.

Striking Bollard Pull Results for ALP Striker

ALP Striker achieved an impressive and most satisfactory bollard pull results of 309.6 tonnes during her sea trials. The DP II Anchor Handling Salvage Tug was delivered on 12 September to ALP Maritime Services. The vessel is designed for towing very large floating objects while also offering services such as anchor handling, positioning and mooring. The ALP Striker has been constructed by Niigata Shipbuilding & Repair, Japan. She is the first of four ultra-long distance towing and anchor handling vessels for ALP Maritime Services, a subsidiary of Teekay Offshore Partners L.P.

NASSCO Christens 4th ECO Class Tanker

General Dynamics NASSCO Christens Fourth ECO Class ECO Product Carrier for American Petroleum Tankers. On Saturday, September 17, General Dynamics NASSCO hosted a christening ceremony for the fourth ECO Class tanker for American Petroleum Tankers (APT) under construction at the company's shipyard in San Diego. U.S. Representative Juan Vargas spoke at the ceremony, and the ship’s sponsor, Mrs. Melissa DeVeau, christened the ship with the traditional break of a champagne bottle alongside the ship.

PureSOx Installed on Canadian Cement Carrier

As well as being the established choice of scrubber for Emission Control Areas (ECAs), Alfa Laval PureSOx is proving its capabilities on the Great Lakes. The system will soon be installed on a cement carrier that will operate in the region as part of the NovaAlgoma fleet. NovaAlgoma Cement Carriers Limited has recently expanded its fleet with the M/v Nacc Quebec. This ecologically efficient self-discharging bulker will be converted from an existing vessel in China and will begin her operation in 2017.

First Carrousel-RAVE Tug Under Construction in Hamburg

Construction of the first Carrousel-RAVE tug has begun at Theodor Buschmann Shipyard in Hamburg. This novel design features the Robert Allan Ltd. and Voith Turbo GmbH & Co. KG developed RAVE propulsion with drives arranged inline along the centreline of the hull, and the Novatug patented Carrousel Towing System installed on the main deck. This unique combination of propulsion and towing arrangements results in inherently safer towing and escort operations, with enhanced maneuvrability for operations in confined waterways and other generally tight spaces.

MAN's G-Type Engine Notches 1,500 Orders

Just six years after its introduction, MAN Diesel & Turbo has confirmed an order for the 1,500th G-type engine. Greek ship operator, Almi Tankers, will take delivery of the ultra-long-stroke 7G80ME-C9 type as prime movers for the two 317,000-dwt VLCC to be built by HHI (Hyundai Heavy Industries Group) in Korea. Coincidentally, Almi Tankers also placed the order for the very first Gtype engine. The crude carriers are due for delivery in, respectively, February and April, 2018. In both instances, the engine is Tier III-compatible.

Crewboat Delivered to Caspian Marine

Built Built by Austal Ships, Rashid Behbudov, sistership to the Muslim Magomeyev and the second Incat Crowther 70m Catamaran Fast Crew Boat, has been delivered for Caspian Marine Services. Muslim Magomayev, the first of this design developed by Incat Crowther, was built by Incat Tasmania and delivered to CMS in 2014. Both Muslim Magomayev and Rashid Behbedov are engineered for the Ampelmann walk-to-work system, which transfers crew to offshore platforms in day-to-day operation as well as in emergency situations.

Today at the SMM trade fair in Hamburg, DNV GL presented Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) with an Approval in Principle (AIP) recognizing the technical feasibility of the new Con-Green 2000 vessel design under the new DNV GL rules. The Con-Green 2000 project brought together partners HMD, MAN Diesel & Turbo, Becker Marine Systems and DNV GL to develop a highly efficient, reliable and economic feeder design. Feeder vessels are the unsung heroes of the container market and have become increasingly important in a world of 18,000, 19,000 and even 20,000 TEU giant ultra large container ships.

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the world’s largest shipbuilder, announced it received the second approval in principle (AIP) from DNV GL for SkyBench, a design for maximizing cargo loading capacity of large containerships. The classification society verifies the strength and structural analysis including the overall finite element  analysis conforming to S11A rule, a partial ship analysis, an overall hatch corner’s relative deformation check, a spot fatigue check for several critical hatch corner locations, and a detailed analysis of the design with a solid model for the parking device.

The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI) designs inland towboats and barges, with a focus on the inland sector. Inland barges built to TSGI designs number in the thousands, along with a myriad of towboat, dry dock and other specialty designs. TSGI provides naval architecture, marine engineering, marine surveying and technical support to clients worldwide. Commercial vessel designs include towboats, inland barges (liquid cargo, dry cargo, crane) and miscellaneous vessels such as dry docks and casinos. The firm has 10 employees.

Industry Collaborates for LNG Bunkering Study

Lloyd’s Register (LR), Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) have signed a joint development project (JDP) to produce a ship-to-ship LNG bunkering compatibility study. This will comprehensively review the design requirements between 6.6K LNG bunkering ships and 14K TEU LNG-fuelled container ships with the goal of verifying safe ship-to-ship LNG bunkering. The study aims to help all stakeholders with interest in LNG as fuel to envisage a clear picture of possible options for LNG supply infrastructure.

New Ferry Designs Answer Asia Specific Challenges

Sparkman & Stephens (S&S), the naval architecture and brokerage firm founded by Olin Stephens and Drake Sparkman in 1929, announced that it was acquired by a group of private investors led by Brooke S. Parish and John B. Reuter. The transaction enables S&S to implement expansion strategies in its design and brokerage businesses, for which it sought growth capital.
