Robert Allan Ltd.: The Evolution of Marine Design

As the 90th anniversary of Robert Allan Ltd. approaches it is quite timely to address the development of Robert Allan’s designs as the years passed by and technology changed.When the first Robert Allan came out to Canada at the end of the First War he was a trained naval architect experienced in the design of rivetted steel ships. With the end of the war and the curtailment of Government support of shipbuilding new steel ships built in BC became very rare. Wood was the material of choice, used in the design and construction of all sorts of commercial and government vessels.

Cadmatic Acquires Eagle Technology

Cadmatic and Macrovision have agreed a major technology co-operation deal. Cadmatic has purchased specially commissioned software technology and development incorporating customized modules of Macrovision Eagle Software Framework. The deal will support Cadmatic's ambitious business and growth strategy.The agreement provides Cadmatic with the necessary technical know-how, commercial property rights, source code and future development control of this specially developed technology. The agreed solution provides Cadmatic with the flexibility and agility required to rapidly respond to client needs in the marine, process and energy industries.Cadmatic has utilized Macrovision's Eagle Framework technology as a development platform for its ship hull 3D design products.

New AVEVA Bocad Software Offers 30-40 Percent Project Savings

AVEVA has announced  its release of new products and improvements in its AVEVA Bocad range of structural steel detailing software. The new products will increase structural detailing capability and enable more design standardization and automation. Together, by enabling more effective decision-making and increasing project transparency, these new features offer potential project time and cost savings of up to 30-40 percent. In addition, AVEVA Bocad has benefited from better integration with AVEVA’s 3D design products - AVEVA Everything3D, AVEVA PDMS and AVEVA Outfitting. Engineering contractors and fabricators working in the Process Plant and Marine industries will therefore be able to achieve greater productivity and project quality.

AVEVA releases AVEVA Design Reuse

AVEVA Design Reuse

Quickly and intelligently copy ship design data between projects for reuse on similar designs to reduce costs. AVEVA, a provider of engineering design and information management solutions for the plant, power and marine industries, has announced the release of AVEVA Design Reuse 12.1, a brand new product within the AVEVA Marine portfolio. AVEVA Design Reuse allows the quick and intelligent copying of ship design data to be reused on a similar ship, reducing cost and risks by allowing the standard design policy to be used on a new design.

Future USS Anchorage (LPD 23) Launched

The future USS Anchorage (LPD 23) launched Feb. 12 from Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding's Avondale, La., shipyard, marking a key milestone in the ship's construction process. Due to extensive pre-outfitting efforts, Anchorage will be the most complete ship in the class at the time of launch. "We started construction on the first ship of the LPD 17 class 11 years ago." said Jay Stefany, LPD 17 program manager for the Navy's Program Executive Office (PEO) Ships. Anchorage is the seventh ship of the San Antonio-class of landing platform docks and is named for the largest city in Alaska. The ship's sponsor is Annette Conway, wife of U.S. Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Conway. She will christen the ship this May in a traditional Navy ceremony.

Maritime Montering Chooses Alu Design

Alu Design & Services announced that it has received its 10th contract from Maritime Montering AS, a global supplier of complete marine accommodation systems. This order is for YN 66 at STX Brevik for E.R. Schiffahrt, Germany.   The cooperation between the companies began in January 2009 when Maritime Montering awarded its first contract to Alu Design. To date, the company has used Alu Design products in its deliveries to Båtbygg AS, Fiskerstrand Verft AS, Havyard Leirvik AS, Hellesøy Verft AS, Karstensens AS, STX Aukra, STX Brevik and Westcon AS. Upcoming orders are already planned for deliveries to Vietnam, Spain, Poland, India and Romania.   (www.alu-design.no)

BIW Awarded $46m Navy Contract

The U.S. Navy has awarded Bath Iron Works, a subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD) , a $45.8m contract option to provide services associated with the detail design and construction of the DDG 1000 Zumwalt-class destroyer. The contract being modified was initially awarded in February 2008. Under this award, Bath Iron Works (BIW) will continue to provide services for the DDG 1000 program, including configuration management and maintenance of class design products; program management; configuration and data management; system and ship integration services; production engineering services; and ship system segment management. In February 2008, the Navy awarded BIW the contract to build the first Zumwalt-class destroyer (DDG 1000), which is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy in 2013.

Feature: And Then There Were Two

The long-awaited awarding of the contract to construct the new series of Littoral Combat Ships (LCS), a series that could total 60 ships worth $14 billion over 15 years, will have to wait just a little longer. Intergraph and DNVS Software Sign Letter of Intent

Intergraph Corporation and Det Norske Veritas Software (DNVS) have signed a letter of intent to complete a software licensing and distribution agreement. The proposed five-year, multi-million dollar agreement includes collaboration by the two companies in the shipbuilding, offshore and plant design markets. Under terms of the letter of intent, DNVS will market and distribute Intergraph's next-generation shipbuilding design applications to the shipbuilding industry. Additionally, Intergraph will license its SmartPlant(R) platform technology to DNVS. Intergraph and DNVS will work together to combine their respective engineering and lifecycle data management applications.

The responsibility of melding, developing and profitably leading one of the world's most prolific high-technology marine companies is, to say the least, a daunting task. Assuming the post with no marine industry experience would seemingly make the job all the more difficult. But Dr. Saul Lanyado enters his position as the new president of the Rolls-Royce Marine division armed with years of engineering and business success and savvy. Naval Facilities Engineering Command Honors Design Excellence

The Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) announced the winners of its 2007 Design Awards program, Oct. 30, to showcase the Navy's best design and construction projects. Wärtsilä System Delivery for MPF

Wärtsilä was awarded a contract from MPF Corp. Ltd to deliver a total power system for a Multi-Purpose Floater. The MPF is planned to be completed and delivered from Dragados Offshore SA, Spain in the fourth quarter of 2008. The contract involves detail design, products, systems and commissioning of the power plant, propulsion, electrical and automation systems. Delivery of the major components will be during the first quarter of 2008. Wärtsilä will deliver eight Wärtsilä 32 diesel engines, generators, medium voltage switchgear, low voltage distribution boards, frequency converters, safety and automation systems. Wärtsilä's own frequency converter technology became part of Wärtsilä's product portfolio in conjunction with the acquisition of Wärtsilä Automation Norway.
