Since December 14 2016, multimodal rail operator H&S Container Line is offering a direct rail connection between the port of Antwerp and Andernach (Germany, Rhineland-Palatinate). Andernach’s trimodal terminal is already connected to Antwerp with a frequent barge service (two round trips per week). The complementary rail shuttle offers new, sustainable opportunities especially for growing flows from Antwerp to the Rhine / Mosel region and for urgent deliveries from the local industry to the Seaport. Open acces train connection: With this rail product, an open access train connection between Antwerp and the region between Duisburg (Germany) and Strasbourg (France) becomes available.

Alphatron Marine said it has acquired a new office and warehouse space in Zwijndrecht, Belgium to serve customers in Belgium and France. The new location – operational since September and officially opened on November 9, 2016 – replaces the company’s existing Meerdonk office. Alphatron Marine Belgium is part of a group of companies governed by Alphatron Marine. Together, they act as importer, producer, developer and service provider of navigation, communication and automation systems. Besides this, the company provides specialized IT solutions.

Bigger container ships are resulting in much greater peaks in container terminal activity, which together with the ever larger combined volumes of bigger alliances, demands fewer, larger terminals in each port. Terminal operators are reacting by consolidating terminal layouts and ownership – and by working more closely together – but what are the consequences for their customers? A recent visit to the Eurogate terminal in Hamburg by China Shipping’s post-Panamax vessel CSCL Le Havre involved an exchange of 11,600 teu, illustrating the sheer scale of volumes per call that terminals increasingly have to deal with. The vessel is shared with CMA CGM and UASC.

Kalmar has secured an order for the delivery of a ship-to-shore (STS) container crane for P&O Ports Antwerp. Despite its compact dimensions - 40 metres outreach, 15 metres railspan and 21 metres backreach - in terms of capacity, the crane can be considered a true heavyweight with a lifting capacity of 65 tonnes under the twinlift spreader. Continually increasing volumes at P&O’s existing terminal at the Delwaidedok resulted in the need for an additional crane and possibly one more in the near future. P&O Antwerp handles at present 1.1 million TEU per year at its terminal with 1300 metres of quay, which can accommodate fully loaded vessels of up to 4000TEU. “Seven manufacturers participated in the tender.
