EST-Floattech Receives €4 Million Investment

Developer of maritime battery systems EST-Floattech has received an investment of 4 million euros from Energy Transition Fund Rotterdam and existing shareholders Rotterdam Port Fund, PDENH, Ponooc, and Yard Energy.Energy Transition Fund Rotterdam is investing 3 million euros, the fund's first investment in maritime battery systems. The existing shareholders are jointly investing 1 million euros.The announcement was made by Chantal Zeegers, the Alderman for Climate, Building, and Housing in Rotterdam.

Rotterdam Port to Host WPCAP

The first World Ports Climate Action Program (WPCAP) congress will take place in Rotterdam next May. The starting signal for the WPCAP was given in September 2018 at the Port of Rotterdam Authority’s initiative.Eleven leading European and American ports have now become affiliated with WPCAP: Antwerp, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Le Havre, Barcelona, Gothenburg, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Vancouver and New York & New Jersey. The ports are working on plans to reduce CO2 emissions from shipping and ports and improve air quality.In the coming spring they will take stock of what has been achieved and will share the results with interested ports, the shipping sector and authorities (port cities and national governments). Agreements will then also need to be made about the follow-up.

NYK Wins Seafarers Safety Award

Japanese shipping giant Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line) has been recognized with the 2019 Seafarers Safety Initiative Grand Prize awarded by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) for the company’s seafarer safety activities.The award recognizes NYK’s initiatives to prevent human accidents and utilize engine data.

New DPS Repositioning Function for Boats

Volvo Penta is enhancing its Dynamic Positioning System to include Repositioning functionality, meaning boaters will be able to make minor alterations to their vessel’s position with a simple tap of the joystick.The feature is the latest element of the company’s Dynamic Positioning System (DPS). Incentivizing Spill Response Innovation

Researchers tackle the tough problems despite a lack of funding and official incentives to move forward. Progress, in particular for Arctic spill response equipment and techniques, is being made. Even in the messy but now seemingly distant wake of such environmental disasters such as the Exxon Valdez grounding and the Deepwater Horizon accident, domestic oil spill response requirements still provide little or no incentive for responders in the U.S. to develop and deploy new equipment. Elsewhere, other countries (especially Norway) have better options for testing and approving systems using an intentional spill. Here at home, this approach has been recommended especially for the Arctic by many stakeholders, to no apparent avail.

Moore Stephens says Shipping Must Improve Risk Management

Not enough companies in the shipping industry are following joined-up risk management procedures, according to international accountant and shipping adviser Moore Stephens. The second annual Moore Stephens Shipping Risk Survey revealed a fall, when compared to last year, in the overall level of satisfaction on the part of respondents that sound risk management had contributed to the success of their organisations. The involvement of senior management in managing risk at the highest level also declined against last year. Respondents to the survey rated the extent to which enterprise and business risk management is contributing to the success of their organisation at an average 6.6, on a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high), compared to 6.9 last time.

Partners Spur Smart Shipping Software Development

The world’s largest shipbuilder has launched an initiative with several industry partners that aims to help small and medium-sized ICT companies develop software for smart shipping, a so-called Eco System for Smart Ships. Under the Memorandum of Understanding, South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and its partners SK Shipping, Intel, Microsoft, the Ulsan Center for Creative Economy & Innovation (UCCEI) and the Daejeon Center for Creative Economy & Innovation (DCCEI) will together help domestic companies develop “17 Ship Service Software,” that meet the needs of shipowners for safe ship operation and improved crew wellbeing. Tero Marine Secures Boa Offshore Contract

Tero Marine informs it has secured a multimillion (NOK) contract for delivery of fleet management software to Norwegian shipping company Boa Offshore. The Bergen-based tech company will install its TM Master suite on 14 vessels. TM Master will thus be the preferred fleet management solution for most of the offshore vessels in the Boa fleet, among them the newly named construction vessel Boa Jarl. “We have been reviewing TM Master for a while now, and are impressed by the vast possibilities in this system,” said Helge Kvalvik, CEO in Boa Offshore.

Failure to Manage Risk Posing Larger Threat to Shipping

Levels of sound enterprise and business risk management are currently satisfactory in the shipping industry, a new survey from Moore Stephens has revealed. But the international accountant and shipping adviser warns that companies that fail to embed effective risk management procedures into their daily activities are likely to pay a high price in today’s tightly regulated and highly competitive industry. The inaugural Moore Stephens Shipping Risk Survey, which will be updated annually, sought to gauge how effectively enterprise and business risks are being managed in the shipping industry, and to analyze how key risks are being handled by companies.

KR Launches Software to Aid ECA Compliance

The Korean Register (KR) has launched an in-house developed software program to assist vessels with fuel oil change over when complying with the new low sulphur regulations. From January 1, MARPOL Annex VI Reg 14 requires vessels sailing within an emission control area (ECA) to burn fuel with a sulphur content of 0.1% or less. This means that ships must switch from normal fuel to low sulphur fuel before entering the restricted zone. KR’s new software assesses fuel consumption at actual operating speed to calculate the time required to completely switch to a low sulphur fuel. The current practice is generally to rely on the experience of the chief engineer which KR has found often results in the vessel burning more of the expensive low sulphur fuel than is necessary.

Aker Solutions acquired UK specialist engineering company International Design Engineering And Services Ltd (I.D.E.A.S) to boost its asset integrity management services. Glasgow, Scotland-based I.D.E.A.S. has developed software and technology that is designed to improve the quality and accuracy of integrity and life time analysis for oil and gas assets. The analysis can be applied in all phases of the development of an installation, from design through construction, operation and life extension. "This technology strengthens our offering of asset integrity management services," said Tore Sjursen, head of Aker Solutions' maintenance and modifications business. "It can be used to predict the lifetime of an installation in a more effective manner.

Synapsis for German Containership Newbuildings

The German navigation system integrator Raytheon Anschütz was selected by the German-based shipowner NSC to supply the latest generation of the IMO-certified Synapsis Integrated Navigation System (INS) to a series of 9,000 TEU Containership newbuildings. The new containerships are built by Korea's Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction’s Subic Shipyard in Subic Bay, Philippines and are scheduled for entering service in 2014. The vessels will operate under a long-term charter of Compania Chilena de Navegacion Interoceanica (CCNI).

Synapsis receives first INS Type Approval

Synapsis Bridge Control is Raytheon Anschütz’ new generation Integrated Navigation System.

Synapsis Bridge Control, the new generation of the Raytheon Anschütz bridge system, is the world’s first navigation system which has been type approved according to IMO’s new Performance Standards for Integrated Navigation Systems (INS). In an official ceremony, the nominated body Germanischer Lloyd (GL) handed over the type approval to Raytheon Anschütz beginning of May 2012. The INS Performance Standards are specified in the IMO resolution MSC.252(83) and apply to all newbuildings since 1st January 2011 where Integrated Navigation Systems are installed.

NCA Enters Long Term Contract with FORCE

FLAGSHIP, the Pan-European maritime transport project part funded by the EU, has successfully developed software that can forecast the condition of a ship’s hull over time to help improve the efficacy of surveys and reduce the amount of time a ship is out of service. FLAGSHIP-HCA (Hull Condition Assessment) is designed to accurately predict the condition of a vessel’s structure, coating and components, enabling ship owners and operators to schedule maintenance in a more efficient manner and thereby reduce maintenance costs while improving safety at sea.

Northrop Grumman to Support Roll-Out of NATO MCCIS

Northrop Grumman  has been selected by the NATO C3 Agency (NC3A) to provide hardware and software support services for the roll-out of the Maritime Command and Control Information System (MCCIS) across NATO countries. The MCCIS merges information gathered from satellites, wide area networks, computerized tactical data processors and machine-readable messages to create a common operating environment for maritime and other assets. It is integrated by NATO support staff and includes commercial-off-the-shelf products together with NATO-developed applications. The MCCIS is installed in every NATO maritime headquarters, which includes more than 300 workstations.
