St. Lawrence Seaway Navigation Season Begins

The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation marked the opening of the Seaway’s 60th navigation season today, with the transit of the newly built Algoma Niagara through Lock 3 on the Welland Canal. State-of-the-art ships such as the Algoma Niagara serve as a key part of the supply chain serving to bolster the competitiveness of North American industry. Over 227,000 jobs are supported by cargo moving over the Great Lakes / Seaway System. Terence Bowles, President and CEO of The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC), noted in his opening address that 2018 marked both the 60th navigation season for the waterway and the 20th anniversary of the SLSMC. Created in 1998 as a not-for-profit corporation, the SLSMC succeeded the former St. Lawrence Seaway Authority.

New St. Lawrence Seaway Board Members & CEO

The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation announced the following recent changes to its Board of Directors. Ian MacGregor assumed the position of Chair of the Board at the meeting of the Board held on August 18, 2010. MacGregor replaces Guy Véronneau, who recently left the Board after serving as Chair for the past four years. MacGregor is a director of Seaway Marine Transport and Chairman of Golden Star Resources Ltd. David L. Muir, FCA joined the Board of Directors in May 2010 as the representative of the Federal Government. Muir is Senior Vice President, Collins Barrow Ottawa Management Consultants Inc. Jonathan Bamberger joined the Board of Directors on August 28th as the industry representative for the Corporation’s “Other Members”.

Welland Canal Opens for Business

Captain Brett Walker of the Algoma Central Corporation vessel Captain Henry Jackman was presented with the ceremonial top hat at Lock 3 this morning, when the Welland Canal officially opened for its 175th consecutive year of service. Dick Corfe, President and CEO of The St. declared the Welland Canal officially open. He also unveiled the first billboard in a striking educational campaign to promote the many benefits to be derived from the increased use of the marine mode - reduced congestion, reduced air pollution and reduced highway maintenance costs. Starting this week, anyone who travels the Toronto - Windsor corridor by road will start to see these billboards along the 400-series of highways.
