The ABB Electric Tow Boat Beckons to Inland Operators

Long a staple for offshore service providers, a more compact and carefully designed version of the diesel electric option is now available for inland pushboats. For budget conscious operators (and who isn’t, in this environment?), the stars may finally be aligned. For many years, electric propulsion has proven to be a viable propulsion solution for many different types of vessels. Most familiar to workboat stakeholders would be the advent of the ‘diesel electric’ offshore serve providers (OSV) that became commonplace during the offshore boom era. Those vessels operated in a different regulatory environment, with the emphasis more leaning towards operational efficiencies and fuel economy.

Caterpillar Marine will launch the Cat Propulsion Twin Fin System at the 2014 ITS Hamburg Conference and Exhibition, June 16-20. The Cat Propulsion Twin Fin System is a new diesel-electric solution that saves on fuel and emissions, while improving overall vessel performance, Caterpillar said. The Twin Fin System protects all of the propulsion mechanical parts within the hull profile while retaining the cargo space saving and maneuverability claims made for outboard solutions while simultaneously offering critical reliability gains.

Is it the Answer? Hybrid Marine Propulsion

Soaring energy costs, more stringent emission regulations and conservation efforts are current topics in every media outlet. With crude oil prices around $120 per barrel, the question arises — what should the U.S. shipbuilding industry do to address those issues to its customers? Only a few years ago, consumption and efficiency were just two of many criteria when it came to the design of a new vessel. Today, however, they have great importance when a new design is on the drawing board. Before we answer the above questions, let's define the status quo. The vast majority of vessels built worldwide are outfitted with diesel propulsion and conventional shaft line. This method of propulsion for long haul trade has been proven over many years as the most efficient and cost-optimized solution.

Alstom Diesel Electric Solution Selected by Otto Candies

Alstom won contract to supply electrical systems for a vessel being built for Otto Candies by the de Hoop shipyard in the Netherlands. The order includes a simplex dynamic positioning (DP) system from Altsom's 'A' series, plus manual thrusters controls and an independent joystick, for the NB400 offshore support vessel for Otto Candies, which is to be built at the Dutch shipyard. This DP order comes on the back of an earlier contract for the same vessel, to supply variable speed drives from Alstom's MV3000 liquid cooled range, plus transformers and motors for the two main 900kW azimuth thrusters. Two of Otto Candies' diving support vessels built by de Hoop - Caballo de Mar and Caballo de Trabajo - are now in service…
