Maintenance Error Led to Chemical Tanker Engine Room Fire

A maintenance error caused an engine room fire aboard the Endo Breeze last year, resulting in $1.2 million in damages, a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) analysis has shown.On April 29, 2022, the Endo Breeze was transiting outbound through the Raritan Bay West Reach channel near Staten Island, New York, when oil spray from a fuel injector pump on the starboard main engine ignited off nearby hot surfaces, causing a fire. First High-pressure SCR System Seals Class Approval

The first ever PBST-branded and -built cluster-3 SCR-HP system has passed its ClassNK approval test at the MAKITA works in Japan, MAKITA Corporation and MAN Energy Solutions announced.The compact SCR system is one of four – originally ordered in 2018 and 2019 – for vessels featuring MAN B&W two-stroke engines with two now delivered and the others currently en route to customers. An MAN B&W 6S46ME-B8.5 engine will power each vessel, with the SCR-HP system making each vessel Tier III-compatible.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems inform that a total of 50,000 Common Rail injection pumps have come off the conveyor belt at L’Orange GmbH in Glatten since 1997. The manufacturer of injection systems for internal combustion engines is generally acknowledged to have pioneered the Common Rail - a technology that raised fuel combustion efficiency and lowered emissions. Back in 1997, L’Orange became the first supplier worldwide to develop a series-production Common Rail pump for diesel and heavy-oil engines.

Konrad, Cummins Propulsion Package Partnership

Sterndrive specialist Konrad Marine formally entered a partnership with diesel engine manufacturer Cummins Marine to jointly offer a complete propulsion package to the commercial, military and recreational maritime markets, a partnershipo announced October 9 at the Workboat Show in New Orleans. The package combines Cummins’ new QSB 6.7L diesel engines (230-425 hp)and Konrad Series 600 sterndrives to present a full propulsion offering, ultimately providing customers with a simplified, tested option from a single source.

Shanghai MHI, JV with Shanghai Diesel Engine Begin Operation

Shanghai MHI Engine Co., Ltd., a manufacturer and marketer of diesel engines jointly established by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Shanghai Diesel Engine Co., Ltd. (SDEC) – a Chinese diesel engine manufacturer – has launched operation. The JV aims to establish a solid position in the Chinese market for industrial-use diesel engines by building up market share through more competitively priced products. To celebrate the commencement of operation, Shanghai MHI Engine held an opening ceremony at the company's site in Yangpu District, Shanghai.

Diesel Engines for China Market – Majors Set Up New Company

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Shanghai Diesel Engine Co., Ltd. (SDEC), a major Chinese diesel engine manufacturer, have signed an agreement to establish Shanghai MHI Engine Co., Ltd., to manufacture and market diesel engines in China. The aim of the new joint venture is to make a full-fledged entrance into the rapidly expanding Chinese market for industrial-use diesel engines and to build up market share through more competitively priced products. The JV is scheduled to begin manufacturing and marketing in December of this year.

Diesel Engine Manufacturer to Expand US Plant

Diesel engine propulsion and power manufacturerTognum, will expand its Aiken Plant for MTU engines and add 20 new jobs over the next two years. The $40 million expansion project is made possible in part by the support of Aiken County, S.C. and the State of South Carolina. Expansion plans for the MTU Aiken Plant include two new research and development buildings that will house new engine test equipment, as well as additional visitor and employee parking areas. Construction has already begun, and Tognum America Inc., an American subsidiary of Tognum AG, expects to complete the new facilities by the end of this year. MHI to License MET Turbocharger Production To STX Metal

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and STX Metal Co., Ltd., a marine diesel engine manufacturer in Korea, have signed an agreement under which MHI will license production and marketing of its MET Turbocharger*, a supercharger for marine diesel engines, to the Korean firm. By establishing a collaborative relationship with STX Metal, MHI aims for further market penetration of the MET Turbocharger in Korea, the world leader in marine diesel engine production. STX Metal is expected to complete production of the first unit of the MET Turbocharger in 2012.

Cummins literally unveiled its QSK60 powerplant to the marine market at the Workboat Show in New Orleans, ushering in a new, more powerful age for the surging diesel engine manufacturer. "This engine will take Cummins into new markets," said Geoff Conrad, general manager, Cummins Marine. The new engine (new for the marine market, that is) has a power range of 2,000 to 2,300 hp (1,492 to 1,716 kW for propulsion and 1,500 to 1,825 kW for auxiliary applications, and is now the most powerful in the Cummins line-up. "The QSK60 provides operators a new choice as well as a cost effective alternative to medium speed," Conrad said. The QSK60 is manufactured at the Daventry Engine Plant in the U.K., the same facility that builds the K38 and K50 engines.

Cummins expects to receive similar compliance statements for its N14 and QSK19 propulsion engines and C series of generator drive engines. The company also announced it has successfully passed the first Lloyd's Register witness test of its B and QSK19 series marine engines, and it expects to receive Statements of Compliance from LR.

Cathedral Power

After a rash of containership design and propulsion system initiatives aimed at extending the reach of the most potent engines already in production, the industry has now been presented with a powering option offering an unprecedented output from a single-engine plant. Wärtsilä Corporation has indeed pushed back the bounds, breaking with the traditional 12-cylinder limit on in-line diesel design, by proposing a 14-cylinder version of its largest two-stroke class. The addition of a 14-cylinder option to its potent Sulzer RTA96C series has been given extra effect by a four percent across-the-board uprating, such that a single-engine solution can now be offered for power requirements up to a stunning 108,920-bhp (80,080-kW).
