European cooperation is necessary in order to integrate inland waterway transport better into the multimodal logistic chains. the annual capital conference of KEO - Chamber Union Elbe/Oder. EMMA enhances freight mobility and logistics by strengthening inland waterway and river-sea transport and promoting new international shipping services. “Now it is time to deliver results and to contribute to discussions on future European transport policy developments. More than 50 organisations are supporting EMMA to bring the project to success”, said Stefan Breitenbach from Port of Hamburg Marketing, being the Lead Partner of the EMMA project. The potential of inland navigation is not yet fully utilized regardless of the benefits it carries.

The European Union has facilitated this project between 2013 and 2015. The project cost a total of 34 million euros, 17 million of which were provided by the European Union from the TEN-T Program. "We can say 'well done' to all parties involved. It looks like we are going to benefit tremendously from this project for the implementation of LNG in the inland water transport sector. Tomorrow 23rd June international law firm Hill Dickinson LLP will be holding  its UK Ports Conference focusing on ‘The Future of UK Ports: changing regulation, shipping trend updates and new opportunities in the supply chain’. The 7th Annual UK Ports Conference will allow senior representatives from across the ports, shipping and maritime sector to network and discuss policy updates, shipping trends and the latest logistics and supply chain guidance. The day will also look at how to approach port development and funding and hear from UK ports on how ports can support the economic development of the local area and the wider UK. Another discussion point will be on EU state aid and the key risk factors are for UK ports.

The European Commission has heeded industry concerns about the poor image of shipping and launched a $4.2 million program it hopes will boost seafarer recruitment and open up awareness of the industry to the general public. The program, which should be underway by the middle of next year, will last three years and will involve participation from other shipping industry players. The maritime industry needs to be proactive, not reactive, to issues facing it and should see new challenges as opportunities and not as threats, according to Dimitrios Theologitis, head of unit, Maritime Transport & Ports Policy at the European Commission. Speaking at the Ship Management International 2nd International Ship Management in , Mr Theologitis said for this to happen “requires an exercise of collective responsibility from all involved actors, not only from ship owners.
