Sri Lanka Shifts Naval base to China-controlled Port City

Sri Lanka is shifting a naval base to a port built and controlled by China, it said on Monday, a move that will strengthen security at a harbor that foreign powers fear China could use for military purposes.The base currently in the tourist district of Galle will be moved 125 km (80 miles) east along Sri Lanka's southern coast to Hambantota, nearer a main shipping route between Asia and Europe.The $1.5 billion deepwater port is likely to play a major role in China's "Belt and Road" initiative and is under a 99-year lease to China Merchants Port Holdings at a cost of $1.12 billion.Government and diplomatic sources have told Reuters that the United States, India and Japan have raised concerns that China might use the port as a naval base.The Sri Lankan government and Chinese embassy in Colom

Fire on Ship Under Repair Kills 5 in India

A blast caused by a fire on a ship under repair at India's Cochin Shipyard Ltd killed five people on Tuesday, and injured around 11, a company spokeswoman said, prompting the government to call for a quick enquiry. The spokeswoman said smoke hampered rescue operations initially and that an investigation would be launched soon. The ship belongs to the country's top energy explorer, Oil and Natural Gas Corp Ltd, she added. An ONGC official said the ship was undergoing maintenance at state-run Cochin Shipyard on the country's southwest coast. The blast took place inside the water tank, said M.P. Dinesh, a senior police official in the southern state of Kerala where the shipyard is located.

2nd WISTA India Forum Receives Strong Support

On 23rd January 2015, the Royal Mumbai Yacht Club saw around a hundred dignified members of the shipping fraternity gather for the second WISTA Annual Forum, an event that lived up to the industry’s expectations. The select crowd included long-term supporters of WISTA India and WISTA members, as well as members who flew down from Delhi, Chennai, Cochin and Bengaluru especially for this conference. Supply Chain & Logistics Excellence Awards A Big Hit

CII-Institute of Logistics, as a part of its continuous endeavor in driving excellence and enable in sharing best practices in logistics and supply chain management organized the maiden Supply Chain And Logistics Excellence (SCALE) Awards on 21 & 22 May 2014 at Mumbai. Rosneft and ONGC Videsh sign MOU

Rosneft and ONGC Videsh Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) yesterday for cooperation in exploration, appraisal and hydrocarbon producton on the continental shelf of the Russian Federation Igor Sechin, President and Chairman of the Management Board, Rosneft and Dinesh Kumar Sarraf, Chairman of the Board of Directors, ONGC Videsh Ltd and Chairman & Managing Director, ONGC signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, in the presence of Mr. Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation. The Memorandum paves the way for the companies’ cooperation in subsurface surveys, exploration and appraisal activities and hydrocarbons production in Russia’s offshore Arctic.

Container Ships Must Alter Course for Profitabality Says Report

Container carriers can recover from the losses they suffered in recent price wars by adopting more disciplined business practices, says a new report. The recently published report by The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) is titled 'Charting a New Course: Restoring Profitability to Container Shipping'. It finds that the container-shipping industry’s poor performance in 2011 and its continued struggles in 2012 are primarily the result of a self-inflicted supply-and-demand imbalance, which triggered intense competition and price wars. The report goes on to explain how the industry is harming its own economics by following misguided practices—especially those affecting capacity and pricing decisions.

Alaska Tanker Company Awarded SQE Certification

Alaska Tanker Company, LLC (ATC) based in Beaverton (Portland), Oregon has achieved "Safety, Quality and Environmental (SQE) Certification" including Accredited International Standards Organization (ISO) 14001 Certification to the Environmental Management System Standard on November 21st, 2001. This accomplishment makes ATC the first U.S. flag seagoing Shipping Company to attain SQE and ISO 14001 Certification from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). This feat was achieved within 2 ½ years of ATC's inception. The attainment of Certification to the International Safety Management (ISM) Code as well as ISO 9001 (Quality Management System Standard) and ISO 14001 demonstrates the Company's commitment to be a World-Class tanker operator.

Carnival Passengers Protest After Millennium Cruise Problems

Paradise, carrying 2,600 passengers, developed an engine problem after leaving Miami on Sunday for a seven-day cruise, forcing Carnival Cruise Lines to cancel visits to islands in the eastern Caribbean in favor of stops in the nearby Bahamas and in Mexico. Passengers expressed concerns about the safety of the ship and complained the change of itinerary disrupted planned meetings with family and friends, crimping their millennium celebrations. "This is a millennium cruise and it's becoming a millennium nightmare right now," said Richard Counts, a lawyer who headed a committee formed by passengers to pursue a possible lawsuit against Carnival. The unspecified problem with one of Paradise's propulsion motors slowed the vessel to about 80 percent of its normal speed, forcing Carnival Corp.
