BWM Should Not Distort the Market: Intercargo

In view of the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee upcoming meeting (MEPC 71 during 3-7 July 2017), Intercargo re-iterates its welcoming the entry into force of the Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention in September. Aspiring to the Convention’s effective implementation, our Association will be making MEPC 71 Committee aware of the critical challenges faced by the bulk carrier segment of the industry. The world bulk carrier fleet is by far the largest single sector by deadweight tonnage and a significant proportion of it utilizes the highly energy efficient gravity discharge system for the topside ballast water tanks. Topside tanks are an integral part of bulk carriers.

Rotterdam Port Contracts Four PortXL Start-ups

The Port of Rotterdam Authority is entering into a partnership with four start-ups for the development of as many innovative projects. Along with six other starters, these companies took part in the port-related accelerator programme PortXL and presented their results during yesterday’s ‘Shakedown’. The ten selected start-ups made amazing progress in the three month long PortXL programme. In fact, nine of them saw their efforts rewarded with a contract with organisations such as Van Oord, Vopak, Boskalis, Alliander and Stena Line. The Port of Rotterdam Authority backed four further developments. Pilot contracts were signed with virtual-reality training programme Parable and maritime-augmented-reality provider FEO AR.

Ulstein Delivers PSV Designs to Kuma

Kuma Shipping has ordered two ships of the new P128 design, a design developed to serve the general PSV market related to work-over barges and jack-up rigs. “This is a design that combines low fuel oil consumption with high carrying capacity at an attractive price,” said Ove Dimmen, area sales manager in Ulstein Design and Solutions. Dimmen and his team developed the Ulstein P128 with input from Kuma Shipping. The Hong Kong-based company ordered the basic design from Ulstein, and the vessels will be constructed at a Chinese shipyard with sufficient experience.
