Bio-Sea BWTS Installed in CMA CGM Antoine De Saint Exupéry.

France's BIO-UV Group has successfully installed and commissioned its Bio-Sea ballast water treatment system (BWTS) in CMA CGM's new flagship, the 400 m long, 20,600 TEU CMA CGM Antoine De Saint Exupéry.The vessel, one of the largest containerships to be built by Hanjin Heavy Industries' yard in the Philippines, and the largest to fly the French flag, was christened in Le Havre earlier this month by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire, and the Minister in charge of Transport, Elisabeth Borne.BIO-UV Group will also supply BIO-Sea Units to nine 22,000TEU CMA CGM vessels under construction in China, following the signing of a supply order earlier this year.Benoit Gillmann…

Alfa Laval Sees Greater Interest in High Flow BWTS

With the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention set to take effect in September, Alfa Laval said it has seen growing customer interest in ballast water treatment systems and in its PureBallast. Of particular note is interest in PureBallast systems with high flow capacities. While interest for high flow PureBallast systems has increased, the manufacturer said it is prepared to support vessels with these needs. PureBallast Nears Completion of USCG Testing Procedures

Alfa Laval saiys it continues to move swiftly towards the submission of a U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) type approval application for Alfa Laval PureBallast 3.1. The company has performed half of the required land-based tests and is set to conclude the remainder of these within Q2. Alfa Laval remains on track to submit its application for USCG type approval after requisite tests of PureBallast are finished in Q2 of 2016. Half of the required land-based procedures have now been completed using the USCG-approved CMFDA/FDA (staining) method.

Following the United States Coast Guard (USCG) decision not to accept the most probable number (MPN) method in assessing ballast water treatment systems, tests of Alfa Laval PureBallast are underway using the USCGA-approved 5 chloromethylfluorescein diacetate (CMFDA) staining method. With completion expected during Q2 of 2016, the tests will enable a new USCG type approval application after receiving the results. In mid-December 2015, the USCG issued its decision that the MPN method is not equivalent to the CMFDA staining method stipulated by the USCG Ballast Water Discharge Final Rule.

De Nora Wins Contract for BWTS Retrofits

De Nora, a supplier of equipment for seawater electrochlorination, said it has been awarded a contract to provide its BALPURE ballast water management system by one of North America’s major oil tanker operators. The BALPURE Twin BP3000-C systems, capable of treating ballast water flow rates up to 6,000m3/h,  will be retrofitted in five crude oil tankers ranging in size from 125,000 DWT to 141,740 DWT. The installations will take place from mid-2016 to 2018. BALPURE utilizes electrolytic disinfection technology to provide ballast water management. In addition to being IMO Type-Approved and USCG AMS-Certified, the system has been Bureau Veritas Type-Approved and ABS Design Assessed.

Wärtsilä wins BWMS Order for 3 Vessels

Wärtsilä has received another important order for its Ballast Water Management Systems (BWMS). Three new container ships being built for a major European shipping company at the Jinhai Shipyard in China will be fitted with Wärtsilä Aquarius UV BWMS. The order was placed with Wärtsilä in the first quarter of 2015. Wärtsilä will deliver the BWMS equipment to the first vessel at the end of 2015, and for the other two ships during 2016. This latest contract follows the order placed last year from the same company, where Wärtsilä BWMS equipment was installed into three 2100 TEU container ships built in Asia, and which were delivered in December 2014. Each of the three vessels will be fitted with a 500m3 capacity Wärtsilä Aquarius UV BWMS.

The KOTC operated crude oil tanker Al Kout is the fourth sister Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) of 317,300 DWT, part of the KOTC Phase III of the fleet newbuilding projects. The vessel has been designed and built under the survey of NK class and distinguished in the register by the following notations: NS*(CSR, TOB, PSPC-WBT) (PS-FA) (ESP, PSCM, IWS) (EA, BWTS, HMS, BRS1), MSN*, M0, Prime Ship-Hull care. According to the builder and the owner, the tanker Al Kout offers many advantages over traditional tankers in terms of efficiency, environmental friendliness, crew comfort and security.

Wärtsilä AQUARIUS BWMS LPG Carrier Retrofit

Wärtsilä contracted to retrofit its AQUARIUS UV ballast water management system for the Marola, a 37,000 cbm fully-refrigerated Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) vessel of the Carbofin SPA, Italy fleet. The retrofitting for the Marola will take place in autumn 2013 when the ship is dry docked. The vessel will operate in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean and South American waters. By virtue of its design, the Wärtsilä AQUARIUS UV ballast water management system allows ease of installation for both retrofit and new build applications.

U.S. Coast Guard Accepts Nine BWTS as AMS

Followers of the Ballast Water Treatement System (BWTS) situation (ie. presumably anyone reading this publication) were heartened last month when the U.S Coast Guard announced its acceptance of nine BWTS as Alternate Management Systems (AMS), helping to finally bring some clarity to ship owners, yards and suppliers. On April 15, 2013, the USCG announced the acceptance of the ballast water treatment systems as AMS in compliance with the service’s March 2012 final rule for Standards for Living Organisms in Ships’ Ballast Water Discharged (SLOSBWD) in U.S. waters.

Mariner Omnipure M55 Selected for Australian Patrol Boats

The Mariner Omnipure sewage treatment system from Severn Trent De Nora has been installed on Cape St George, a new patrol boat designed and constructed by Austal for the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service. Cape St George is the first in a series of eight patrol boats to be delivered to the owners between March 2013 and February 2015, which will all be outfitted with the Mariner Omnipure M5508 system. The contract was secured through HMA-POGC of Australia. The new Cape Class patrol fleet was designed and constructed by Austal, a global defense prime contractor.

LiqTech International, Inc. LiqTech International, Inc. has unced that LiqTech Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of LiqTech International, has been awarded the MINT (Maritime Innovation & Technology) Fund for the development of a Ballast Water Treatment System. LiqTech Pte Ltd based in Singapore will be test-bedding its proprietary Silicon Carbide (SiC) membrane to configure a high efficiency and robust filtration solution for BWTS to meet the standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). General Manager LiqTech Pte, Mr. Kum Leong Lee commented, "We are very pleased with the support and recognition by The Maritime and Port of Authority of Singapore (MPA). Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore awards MINT ((Maritime Innovation & Technology) funding to LiqTech International, Inc. subsidiary LiqTech Pte Ltd. The award is for the development of a Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS). LiqTech Pte Ltd based in Singapore will be test-bedding its proprietary Silicon Carbide (SiC) membrane to configure a high efficiency and robust filtration solution for BWTS to meet the standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The Maritime and Port of Authority of Singapore (endowed with the MINT Fund provides support in the maritime industry towards education, training and research and development) is providing funding support towards LiqTech's development of a robust BWTS.

Wärtsilä Wins Contract to Supply Aquarius UV

Wärtsilä has won a contract to supply ballast water management systems (BWMS) to four platform supply vessels (PSVs) for Tidewater Marine, L.L.C., a provider of offshore service vessels to the global energy industry. The scope of supply for the vessels, due for delivery from the Cosco (Guangdong) Shipyard in 2014, includes four 250m3/hr capacity Wärtsilä Aquarius UV BWMS, which will be assembled and shipped from Wärtsilä’s manufacturing facility in the UK. The contract was signed with Cosco shipyard in August.

The Type-Approved BALPURE ballast water treatment system from Severn Trent De Nora has received type approval from classification society Bureau Veritas (BV) for its full range of standard ballast water treatment systems that can treat ballast water flow rates of up to 5,000 m3/h. Standard systems can be supplied as multiple sets to treat higher flow rates. The type approval was granted by BV following stringent review of the BALPURE system per BV rules and guidelines along with the guidelines contained in the IMO Resolution MEPC.174(58).

World’s First Offshore Barge with Built-in BWTS

The BALPURE ballast water treatment system, which received Type Approval in July 2011, has been selected for use on two flattop oceangoing heavy deck cargo barges. The Type-Approved BALPURE ballast water treatment system from Severn Trent De Nora has been selected for use on two oceangoing heavy deck cargo barges being constructed for Norwegian-based Greenway Shipping by Dalian Shipyard, at its shipyard in Dalian, China. The 9,025 dwt oceangoing barges will reportedly be the first new offshore barges to install the BALPURE system.
