Why Ammonia Is the Fuel of the Future for Maritime Shipping

Š egokhan / Adobe Stock

Commercial maritime shipping has a fuel problem. While the industry has cemented its position as the essential piece of the global supply chain—moving more than 80% of all international goods by volume—its dependence on carbon-emitting fuel has come with a high cost.Maritime shipping is responsible for roughly 3% of all greenhouse gas emissions, according to the International Maritime Organization. The longer that ships continue to run on carbon-emitting fuel, the harder it will be to reach net zero emissions by 2050 and to prevent the worst damage predicted by climate scientists.

Hydrogen As an Energy Carrier

Hydrogen can play a significant role in decarbonizing world energy supply to mitigate climate change, according to a new research paper by DNV GL, the technical advisor to the oil and gas industry.According to new DNV GL research paper, decarbonization could drive an estimated 100,000-fold rise in demand for hydrogen for energy by 2050. The paper lays out a viable business concept for producing low-carbon transportable hydrogen offshore from natural gas.'Hydrogen as an energy carrier' predicts demand for hydrogen for heating residential and commercial space, heat for industry, and transport to reach between 39 and 161 million tonnes of hydrogen per annum (Mtpa) in 2050, under various modelled scenarios.

Vopak Says No Go On Tank Storage Sale

Dutch-based chemical distribution and storage company Vopak NV said on Monday it was not considering selling its tank storage activities despite interest from another company. Vopak's statement followed a report that the company had received a 1.1 billion euro bid for its tank storage activities from a foreign company. But Vopak said hiving off the tank storage activities, which contributed about two-thirds of the company's cash flow, was not consistent with its strategy. "Capitalizing on the prevailing cohesion between logistics and chemical distribution continues to be the cornerstone of our strategy, particularly since the oil and chemical industry is increasingly striving for consolidation of its logistics and distribution activities," company officials said.
