Op-ed: Jones Act Waivers Do Little as Disaster Relief

Like swallows arriving in the spring, a chorus for Jones Act waivers can reliably be anticipated to accompany the annual parade of hurricanes across the geographical region covered by the Act. The logic: emergency situations dictate maximum emergency relief, and the Jones Act is perceived to be an obstacle to providing that relief. That perception is wrong.A review of hurricane induced disaster situations over recent years reveals that maritime supply chains into affected ports are rarely a problem.

Gazprom, Kogas for Tighter LNG Cooperation

Russian oil and gas company Gazprom Neft has announced that a working meeting has been held between Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee, and Hee-Bong Chae, President and Chief Executive of KOGAS.The meeting participants reviewed the state and prospects of cooperation between the companies, highlighting the stability of LNG supplies under the contract between Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd. and KOGAS.The parties expressed interest in further expanding their cooperation in the area of LNG and continuing their sci-tech collaboration.KOGAS (Republic of Korea) is focused on the construction and operation of LNG receiving terminals and gas distribution networks…

Kalmar to Help Bimbo's Ops at Mexico

Kalmar has concluded a deal to supply a total of three Kalmar Ottawa Electric Terminal Tractors T2E to the Mexican bakery product manufacturer Bimbo.Kalmar, part of Cargotec, said in a press release that the order was booked in Cargotec's 2019 Q1 order intake, with delivery of the machines scheduled to take place during Q3 of 2019.Bimbo is the largest baking company in the world, with 199 plants and more than 1,800 sales centres across 32 countries throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa.The company has one of the largest direct distribution networks in the world, distributing products including fresh and frozen sliced bread, buns and cookies. The Kalmar Ottawa electric terminal tractors will be operated at Grupo Bimbo's new distribution centre in Azcapotzalco, Mexico City.

Nokia, ABB and Kalmar Trial 5G Technology for Harbor Automation

Nokia, ABB and Kalmar, part of Cargotec,  have successfully conducted industrial trials that leverage the low latency capabilities of 5G to support time-critical applications and enhance protection and efficiency in a smart electricity grid and in harbor automation.In a joint press release the companies said that the trials, conducted as part of the Wireless for Verticals (WIVE) research project, represent one of the first real-world applications of time-critical 5G applications on electricity grid and harbor automation.URLLC (ultra-reliable low latency communications) has been identified as one of the three main usage scenarios for 5G due to its ability to transmit data, within a few milliseconds or less, with high reliability.

Effer Becomes Part of Hiab

Loader crane manufacturer Hiab, part of Cargotec, has completed the acquisition of  Effer loader cranes business from the CTE group.According to a press release from Hiab, the signing of the transaction was announced on 31 July 2018. For Hiab as the global leader in on-road load handling solutions, this acquisition means a significant advancement in its ambition to be leader in cranes and preferred partner for its customers.Effer, headquartered in Minerbio, Italy, and with approximately 400 employees, is a renowned premium knuckle-boom crane manufacturer. Effer's product range includes truck loader cranes, special application truck cranes, and marine cranes, with particular recognition for heavy cranes >100 tm capacity.

Kirby Corp Acquires Stewart & Stevenson

Houston based tank barge operator Kirby Corporation said it has signed an agreement to acquire the assets and businesses of Stewart & Stevenson LLC for approximately $710 million. The agreement was signed on June 13 by the companies’ executive chairmen, Joseph H. Pyne of Kirby Corporation and Hushang Ansary of Stewart & Stevenson. Kirby said the purchase  will be funded through its revolving credit facility and common stock valued at approximately $355 million. Stewart & Stevenson, also based in Houston, is a subsidiary of the Houston-based Parman Capital Group.

PA Pipeline Spat Could Upend International Oil Flows

Refiners from the Midwest United States are fighting for access to a vital Pennsylvania pipeline – a move that could cripple their East Coast competitors and redraw the map for international flows of crude and fuel into coveted coastal markets. The regulatory dispute centers on a proposal by pipeline operator Buckeye Partners’ to that state's Public Utilities Commission. The plan would reverse the flow of fuels on a section of Buckeye’s 350-mile Laurel Pipeline, which currently flows from the East Coast to Pittsburgh. Because pipelines only flow in one direction, the change would effectively block five East Coast refineries from serving Pittsburgh – with Midwest refiners picking up their market share.

Dual-fuel Tanker Delivered to Desgagnés

Desgagnés has taken delivery of the duel-fuel tanker M/T Damia Desgagnés, a brand new vessel recently built in Turkey. A next generation and state-of-the-art asphalt-bitumen-chemical tanker, she is the first of a series of four oil carriers, custom-built according to an original concept developed by Desgagnés and ordered at the Besiktas shipyard located in Yalova near Istanbul, Turkey. The Damia Desgagnés is the first dual-fuel powered Canadian-flagged tanker and the first-ever asphalt carrier of this type. Double-hulled, she is equipped with a Wärtsila 5RT-flex 50DF engine developing a power output of 5,450 kW. The ship can be powered by any of three types of fuel, namely heavy fuel oil, marine diesel oil or liquefied natural gas (LNG).

DNV GL, SGN Join Forces to Deliver Innovative project

Following a successful Network Innovation Competition bid in 2015, DNV GL has secured innovation funding from SGN to partner in a project to demonstrate the viability and practical reality of a mixed-source, energy-centric gas network for the future. The project was developed, and will be delivered, in partnership with SGN who are one of the UK's key gas distribution operators, and industry leaders in innovation. The integrated energy network of the future must be flexible, secure, cost effective and above all safe. The changing gas industry, driven by a reduced North Sea supply is increasingly required to accommodate gas from more diverse sources such as biomethane and shale gas.

Miko Marine AS has appointed Spencer Go as managing director of its new subsidiary in Singapore which was established in May. Miko Marine Asia Pte Ltd has opened a new office in Lokyang, Singapore from where Spencer Go will be spearheading the sale of Miko products and services throughout Asia. Go will be supported by Indonesia-based naval architect Per Johansson who is an established member of the Miko team and is known in the region for his knowledge of innovative marine and offshore heavy lift and transportation contracting.

Abu Dhabi Ports celebrated the groundbreaking of Schmidt ME Logistics’ new facility in Khalifa Port’s industrial, trade and logistics zone, Kizad. The ceremony officiated by Dr. Wolfgang Hoppmann, CEO of Schmidt ME Logistics along with senior representatives from both companies took place on May 27, 2015. Schmidt ME Logistics specializes in the packaging, product handling and intermodal transportation of dry bulk products in addition to providing services to include patent technologies exclusive to Schmidt Logistics.

ATTC Celebrates 75 Years

In 1940, Jack Walters, Sr. started manufacturing oxy-fuel cutting tips in a makeshift workshop in his home. As the demand for materials and manufacturing brought on by World War II increased, Walters started American Torch Tip Co. (ATTC) in a small, rented garage in Pittsburgh, Pa. Seventy-five years later, ATTC’s manufacturing plant and headquarters now occupy approximately 72,000 sq. ft., spanning three buildings in Bradenton, Fla. There, the company produces about 20,000 parts, encompassing five welding technologies including Plasma, MIG, TIG, Oxy-Fuel and Laser.

Volvo Penta announced the opening of the new Volvo Group Central Parts Distribution Center in Byhalia, Mississippi, in a move to optimize delivery performance and efficiency for dealers and OEM customers in North America. As the anchor tenant of a new industrial park, the one million square-foot state-of-the-art Volvo Group facility will support Volvo Penta recreational marine, commercial marine and industrial business segments, as well as all Volvo Group business areas in North America, and will open for business November 24.

P. by purchasing all the shares of Peerless Industrial Group, Inc. The share transfer of Peerless shall be executed subject to the terms and conditions in the Stock Purchase Agreement. Kito Americas, Inc. currently operates Harrington Hoists, Inc. and Kito Canada (KCI) businesses in North America and is the largest subsidiary of the Kito Corporation of Japan. LNG America and Liquiline announce an agreement to jointly develop commercial offerings for LNG marine fuel markets in the North American Pacific Northwest and the transport of LNG in ISO containers to remote markets in Hawaii and Alaska. The parties to the agreement explain that each brings unique skills and experience to the joint initiative:  Liquiline has pioneered the use of LNG ISO containers for LNG fuel markets in Northern Europe; LNG America is developing LNG distribution networks including America’s first Jones Act LNG bunker/shuttle vessels. Together, the joint effort will focus on the movement of LNG over long distance by ISO containers being moved by ship and the servicing of local markets by way of LNG bunker/shuttle vessels.

Multi-Purpose Common User Facility At DP World London Gateway

In another milestone in the development of its London Gateway Logistics Park, DP World has announced Buckingham Group has been awarded the contract to build the Common User Facility (CUF). Following a period of ground preparation and development of key infrastructure by DP World, Buckingham Group is now mobilising to start construction, with the new logistics centre planned for completion in Q1 2015. The 375,000 square foot multi-purpose specialist cargo handling centre will be built in two phases and will be fully integrated with the new deep-sea container port DP World London Gateway. White House Honors Chiarello for LNG Efforts

TOTE, Inc. President and CEO Anthony Chiarello is among 11 honored by the White House as 2014 transportation industry “Champions of Change.” Chiarello was chosen for his role in leading the U.S. maritime industry toward natural gas as fuel. TOTE is building the first natural gas-powered containerships in the world to serve Puerto Rico and is converting its ships in Alaska to natural gas; TOTE is the first in the United States to convert its fleet to liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Yanmar, VETUS Cooperate Under Separate Names

On April 1, 2013, VETUS joined the Yanmar group. Immediately after the acquisition both parties started working closely together on a project with the objective to realize a brand and distribution strategy for both Yanmar and VETUS. In December 2013 the results of this project were presented to both Yanmar and VETUS sales and distribution networks. The most important conclusion is that both brands, VETUS and Yanmar will remain as two separate brands, for both the marine engine range as other systems. VETUS products will not be relabeled as Yanmar, or vice versa. Yanmar offers propulsion systems, while VETUS creates complete boat systems.
