Responders Determine Cause of Flooding on Vessel in American Samoa

A salvage dive team located a two-inch diameter hole on the port side of the engine room and applied a temporary patch. The vessel is no longer taking on water. Any pollution from the incident has been recovered or dissipated. Containment booms will remain in place, and a watchstander will stay on the vessel to monitor the situation. A long term plan for the ship is in development.“The safety of residents and responders is our priority, and while no one wants something like this to happen, thankfully it occurred at the pier where they swiftly addressed the issue,” said Lt. Erica Brewton, Sector Honolulu Incident Management Division.

Pontoon Deck Preservation for Floating Dry Docks

Photo: Vigor-Alaska photography

Dry dock pontoon deck preservation is often taken for granted. In the flow of ever changing priorities for dry docks, it often gets pushed aside and/or delayed. If neglected long enough and often enough between preservation cycles, the thickness of the pontoon deck steel plates can be compromised. Salt water with chloride contamination causes accelerated corrosion while impact and abrasion damage from heavy equipment also take their toll. For shipyards, the overall objective should be to provide a protective surface that will hold up over time, and that is easy to clean.

Odfjell reported third quarter 2014 chemical tankers EBITDA of $26 million, compared with $24 million in second quarter, as activity in the chemical tanker markets in third quarter was quite similar that of the previous period. Reduced spot trading to Asia from Europe and the U.S. caused downward pressure on freight rates as fewer cargoes where available. Time-charter results were down by 3%. Towards the end of the quarter the CPP market improved, which the company expects will positively affect also the chemical tanker sector.
