US Navy Aids Ailing Cargo Ship Crewman
The U.S. Navy’s amphibious transport dock USS San Antonio (LPD 17) provided medical assistance to a crew member of a cargo vessel after receiving a distress call September 12. After receiving the call at 5:32 p.m., the ship's medical team boarded the Liberian-flagged motor vessel Fernando and rendered aid to the crew member, a Polish national, who was then transported to San Antonio for further evaluation. After evaluating the condition of the crew member and assessing a need for hospital care, San Antonio coordinated a medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) to a hospital ashore in Oman for follow-on care.
Fleet Week Kicks off in New York
Three U.S. Navy ships, two U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) cutters, and four U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) Yard Patrol boats have arrived in the New York Harbor to participate in the 2015 Fleet Week New York Parade of Ships. Participating ships include the amphibious transport dock USS San Antonio (LPD 17), Arleigh Burke-class Aegis guided-missile destroyers USS Barry (DDG 52) and USS Stout (DDG 55), 703-class USNA Yard Patrol boats, and U.S. Coast Guard cutters Sturgeon Bay (WTGB 109) and Spencer (WMEC 905). USS San Antonio (LPD 17) in Production
The Navy’s newest amphibious ship, the amphibious transport dock USS San Antonio is in production. USS San Antonio is the first ship of 12 amphibious ships that will support the Marine Corps’ landing forces and embarked Marines in forward presence operations throughout the world. Designed to fully support Marine Corps missions involving amphibious or expeditionary maneuver warfare, as well as special operations, the ship has a flight deck for aircraft and a well deck for landing craft or tracked amphibious vehicles. Each ship can carry 720 Marines, land them by Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicles, or fly them to their objective areas in a variety of helicopters or vertical take-off and landing aircraft. At 684 in length, 105 ft.
USS Austin Decommissioned After 41 Years of Service
The amphibious assault ship USS Austin (LPD 4) was decommissioned Sept. 27, during a ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk, ending more than 41 years of naval service. “We are one of the oldest, best ships in the fleet and its time to turn over the watch,” said Cmdr. Kevin Flanagan, Austin’s commanding officer. Commissioned Feb. 6, 1965, Austin was the first LPD class ship built, and the lead ship in its class. The ship was involved in the nation’s space program as the recovery ship for Apollo 12, and part of the recovery for Apollo 14 and 15. Austin was also the test platform for a wide range of expeditionary warfare systems entering the fleet, including: MH-53 helicopter, precursors of the present day landing craft air cushion (LCAC) and the U.S. Marine Corps AV-8 Harrier jets.
USS San Antonio Arrives in Norfolk
