Consolidation – A Path to Subsea Vessel Sustainability

In recent years, the speed with which newbuild vessels have entered the market has amplified the subsea vessel demand/supply imbalance, says a report by Douglas-Westwood London. This has been further exacerbated by sustained low oil prices, as operators defer the sanctioning of new offshore projects which could have supported vessel utilisation. As a result, the average vessel dayrates declined by an average of 35% between 2014 and 2016. The weak market conditions have meant that many low specification vessels have struggled to hold on to existing charter rates, whilst some contracts were cancelled entirely. Furthermore, several high specification vessels have been forced to offer significantly lower day rates so as to stay competitive in such challenging times.

Fatal accident on Skandi Pacific

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said that a 39-year-old New South Wales man has been crushed to death onboard a supply vessel off the Pilbara coast after a wave came over the back deck. The ATSB said crew members on the Skandi Pacific were attempting to shelter from heavy weather and secure cargo roughly 166 kilometres north-west of Karratha about 5:30am (AWST) yesterday when the wave struck. Bureau is investigating the death. Norway’s DOF Management, part of DOF Group ASA, has confirmed that a crew member was killed while working on board the 3,170 DWT anchor handling tug. Operations were suspended immediately, the emergency response team was mobilised and the vessel is now on its way back to port. The authorities have been notified, says a statement from the group.

Safety the Focus as Heavy Lifting Picks Up

Samson and Manitowoc Announce KZ100 Synthetic Crane Hoist Line. (KZ100 is also featured in the image running across the top of this page)

Heavy lift operations offshore are an awe-inspiring feat, but an operation that requires consistent monitoring of man, machine and procedure to ensure they are conducted in as an efficient and safe manner as possible. Due to a growing focus on safety related to subsea lifting operations, DNV GL recently established a Joint Industry Project (JIP) to develop practical methods for reducing the risks and lifetime cost of steel wire ropes for subsea lifting applications, using an integrated systems approach.
