HMD's Ammonia-powered LPG Carrier Designs Earn DNV Approval

DNV has awarded HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard an approval in principle (AIP) for the design of ammonia dual fuel 45,000 m3 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers.The presentation took place at the HD Hyundai Global R&D Center (GRC) in Seongnam, Korea. Naftomar Shipping Orders Four Ammonia-powered VLGCs

Shipowner Naftomar Shipping announced an order for four very large ammonia carriers, to be built by South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean (formerly known as Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering) for scheduled delivery from 2026. With a capacity of 93,000 m3, the ships are among the world’s largest ammonia carriers ordered to date.The Bureau Veritas (BV) classed ships will be fitted with a ME-LGIP LPG dual-fuel engine, ready to be converted to use ammonia as fuel when the MAN ES ammonia engine retrofit kit is made available.

China Claims Top Shipowning Nation Title Based on Gross Tonnage

China has overtaken Greece to become the world's largest shipowning country in terms of gross tonnage, according to information released over the weekend by the Shanghai-based China Shipowners' Association.China Daily reports that data from Clarksons Research shows the fleet size of Chinese shipowners has reached 249.2 million GT, accounting for a global market share of 15.9%, about $180 billion in fleet value. ClassNK AiP for Ammonia Fuel Supply System

ClassNK issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) for an ammonia fuel supply system for oil tanker and container ship developed by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI).ClassNK carried out a review of a conceptual design of the system developed by SHI based on the part C of its "Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels". Upon confirming they comply with the prescribed requirements, ClassNK issued the AiP.Dong-Joo Kim, Head of Shipbuilding Sales Engineering Team, Samsung Heavy Industries said, "We are happy to collaborate with ClassNK in this important design development and believe this AiP award demonstrates SHI’s readiness for the new ammonia shipping market that is coming from global decarbonization demands."

SHI Uses Sonar to Analyze Underwater Radiated Noise

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has tested technology to precisely analyze the radiated noise of ships underwater using sonar.The technique measures the intensity, direction, and distance, and SHI has used it to precisely analyze the cause of noise emitted from a 174,000cbm LNG carrier.SHI is using the technology to forecast noise depending on speed and draft and aims to expand it beyond propellers to include underwater radiated noise from engines and machinery.The IMO is considering regulations on underwater noise, as it can adversely affect animals such as whales.

Oslo-listed GC Rieber Shipping has agreed to sell its SURF / Construction Vessel Polar Onyx to Taiwan-based offshore wind service conglomerate Dong Fang Offshore and Hung Hua Construction.The delivery of the vessel, built at Ulstein Verft in 2014, is expected to take place in the first quarter of 2022. Yinson, PTSC Add Another Year to PTSC Lam Son FPSO Contract

Malaysian FPSO provider Yinson has secured a contract extension for the PTSC Lam Son FPSO in Vietnam with Vietnam's PTSC AP.The 243 meters long Lam Son FPSO, able to produce 15,000-20,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd), with a storage capacity of up to 650,000 barrels of oil, has been operating in Vietnam since 2014. Following the FPSO conversion by Singapore's Keppel in 2014, the vessel was deployed in the Thang Long and Dong Do oil fields in Cuu Long Basin.Yinson said Thursday that the contract extension had been signed for a further period of 12 months from July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022.
