China's First Inter-tidal Wind Power Project
Classification society Bureau Veritas assists Longyuan, China, in 'Jiangsu Longyuan Rudong 150 MW Offshore Wind Farm Pilot Project Phase III. As the only foreign third party inspection company working on this project to have participated in all three phases, Bureau Veritas services included supervision for the tower and pipe piles construction. According to BV, this was the first large scale intertidal offshore wind power project in the world, and incorporated pipe pile structures on the wind turbines using the latest technology.
Europe & China Offshore Wind Power Report Available
A new report looks at opportunities in the developing Sino-European offshore wind energy market. Offshore wind is the means of a reliable, intensive and abundant renewable energy. This relatively new source of electricity generation, which is capable to meet much of the populated coastal areas need for power around the world, has been also stimulating the development of marine economies with thousands of new jobs. Recently, offshore wind power has been widely viewed as a feasible way to transform economies from oil reliance to sustainable growth not only to meet government obligations in cutting emissions, but to provide the fundament for a new economic sector.
New Deep-water Port South of Shanghai
The Yangshan deep-water port (洋山深水港) is a new port in Hangzhou Bay south of Shanghai. Built to circumvent growth limitations for the Port of Shanghai as a result of shallow waters, it allows berths with depths of up to 15 metres to be built, and is capable of handling the largest container ships today, reports 'Safety4Sea'. The port achieves this by building on the offshore islands of Greater and Lesser Yangshan (part of the Zhoushan archipelago), which have been amalgamated by land reclamation and connected to the mainland via the Donghai Bridge, the latter of which was opened on 1 December 2005 as the second-longest ocean bridge in the world at 32.5 km in length. In 2000/2001, the decision was made to commence construction on the first of four phases.
Chinese Offshore Development Blows Past U.S.
According to a September 7 report from The New York Times, China has leapt past the United States, installing its first offshore wind farm. Several other farms also are already under construction, and even the Chinese government's ambitious targets seem low compared to industry dreaming. The first major offshore wind farm outside of Europe is located in the East China Sea, near Shanghai. The 102-megawatt Donghai Bridge Wind Farm began transmitting power to the national grid in July and signals a new direction for Chinese renewable energy projects and the initiation of a national policy focusing not just on wind power, but increasingly on the offshore variety.
