URI Unveils Name of New Research Vessel

The National Science Foundation’s new Regional Class Research Vessel that will soon call the University of Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay Campus home has a name: Narragansett Dawn.Graduate School of Oceanography Dean Paula S. Bontempi announced the name of the new $125 million vessel after a nationwide competition and approval from the NSF.“Narragansett Dawn acknowledges the Indigenous peoples’ histories, ancestors, and perseverance in our communities today,” said URI President David M. Dooley.

Scorpio Tankers Awards BWMS Retrofit Contract

Choice Ballast Solutions announced it has expanded its collaboration with Scorpio Ship Management S.A.M., as agent for certain vessel-owning subsidiaries of Scorpio Tankers Inc., by contracting to provide turnkey integration engineering and project management services for ballast water management system (BWMS) installations on board an additional 39 vessels.The previous contract with Scorpio Tankers on 12 ships of the Duchessa Class is already underwaywith recently completed Engineering Design and Shipyard Installation packages for the STI Duchessa and STI Opera.John Dooley…

Choice Ballast Solutions Chosen for Scorpio Tanker Retrofits

Choice Ballast Solutions was recently contracted by Scorpio Ship Management S.A.M., as agent for certain vessel-owning subsidiaries of Scorpio Tankers Inc. to provide engineering and project management to retrofit the Ecochlor ballast water management system (BWMS) on 12 of their vessels. The engineering is underway, and retrofits are scheduled to commence during each vessel’s next dry dock beginning in the fourth quarter of 2018 and extending into 2020.John Dooley, President of Choice Ballast Solutions, said, “Scorpio is recognized worldwide for their proactive policies to safeguard the environment and have operational strategies to provide superior results over time.

AWO, ACC Renew Chemical Shipping Agreement

The American Waterways Operators (AWO) and The American Chemistry Council (ACC) have renewed for three years a Memorandum of Agreement to promote environmental, health, safety and security performance through ACC's Responsible Care and AWO's Responsible Carrier Program. This agreement was originally executed in 2006, and subsequently renewed in 2010 and 2013. The MOA extends cooperation and collaboration between chemical shippers and carriers and provides ACC's Responsible Care Partner companies in the marine sector the option of using AWO's Responsible Carrier Program audit system to meet ACC's Responsible Care certification requirements. Chemicals account for roughly 10 percent of total barge traffic, with 70 million tons moved by barge in 2014.

Dooley Named President at Choice Ballast

Richard A. Mueller named John P. Dooley President of Choice Ballast Solutions, LLC. Working in close cooperation with ballast water systems suppliers and vessel owners, Dooley will be responsible for the overall management of the Choice commercial marine business activities, providing ballast water treatment systems integration from survey to signoff. Choice services include surveys, engineering, drawings, project management, equipment commissioning and startup and service. He will be located in Cleveland, Ohio and report directly to Mueller, CEO of Choice.

Netsco Forms Choice Ballast Solutions

Rich Mueller, President and CEO of Netsco, a company in marine engineering and naval architecture firm since 1984, has established Choice Ballast Solutions, LLC (Choice) to provide additional engineering and service capacity. Choice offers shipowners assistance with selection, engineering and installation of ballast water management systems. Choice services include surveys, engineering, drawings, project management, equipment commissioning and startup and service. Choice said it recognizes that the ballast water treatment market is stalled due to structural constraints, (lack of equipment type approval from the U.S. Coast Guard and/or ratification of the 2004 Ballast Water Treatment (BWT) Convention).

Crowley’s Menard Promoted to VP of Risk Management

William Pennella, vice chairman and executive vice president of Crowley Maritime Corporation, announced today that Dwight Menard has been promoted to vice president of risk management effective Dec.
