Mackay Marine announced Wednesday it has opened its newest marine electronics sales and service center in Cape Town, South Africa, following the acquisition of Dynamic Marine Systems (DMS) (Pty) Ltd.Specializing in nav/comm electronics, dynamic positioning systems (DP), and automation equipment, DMS serves high-seas, oil and gas, coastal, commercial fishing and naval customers. IMCA Publishes Guidelines for DP OSV Safe Operations
Reliable and robust methods of positioning are required for safe vessel operations in close proximity to offshore installations. Dynamic positioning (DP) is well-established as a primary method of vessel positioning in the diving, drilling, construction, accommodation and shuttle tanker sectors, and is especially suited to deep-water developments. As development and management of DP becomes more refined, increasingly logistics support vessels are becoming equipped with DP systems with increasing reliance being given to such systems.
Joint Safety Alert: DPS Failure on Vessels
Discussion: This Joint Safety Alert addresses a dynamic positioning (DP) incident on a vessel resulting in a loss of position while conducting a critical Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) activity. An equipment failure, an operational error and multiple failure modes not identified in the vessel’s Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) combined to produce the loss of position. The OCS activity – well operations that introduced hydrocarbon flow from a well to the vessel – was critical because of the potential for loss of position to result in personal injury, environmental pollution, or catastrophic damage. These consequences were averted because of the successful actions taken by the crew, who performed an emergency disconnect from the well in accordance with established procedures.
C-Mar Enters Major FMEA Contract with Maridive
C-MAR Group, an offshore and marine industry services company, announced that it has won a contract to carry out Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) surveys and trials on Maridive Group vessels for the next five years. Expected to be worth in excess of $500,000, the agreement covers 16 Maridive Dynamic Positioned (DP) vessels and will be serviced from C-MAR’s Singapore, Dubai and Rio de Janeiro regional headquarters. All Class Two and Class Three DP vessels are required under classification rules to undergo annual DP FMEA testing. Under the terms of the contract C-MAR will provide a continuous review of the Maridive DP fleet, and where possible will synchronize them with vessels’ five yearly Classification Society special surveys.
