IMO to Review GHG Strategy and More at MEPC 80

The IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) - 80th session will meet at IMO Headquarters in London from July 3-7, and amongst key agenda items, the MEPC 80 session is expected to adopt an upgraded IMO greenhouse gas strategy.The revised IMO GHG Strategy will contain concrete greenhouse gas reduction targets for the sector and is expected to outline a range of technical and economic measures. China, Philippines to Draft Protocol to Avoid Maritime 'Miscalculations'

China and the Philippines will negotiate a military protocol to avoid maritime “miscalculations”, Manila’s defence minister said on Wednesday, following a brief standoff near a Philippine-occupied island in a disputed part of the South China Sea. Delfin Lorenzana said the Philippines tried to put up makeshift structures on a sand bar about 4 km (2.5 miles) off Thitu island in the Spratly archipelago in August, but China objected and sent ships to the area. President Rodrigo Duterte sought to defuse tensions by ordering troops to pull out. Construction was stopped. “We intend to sit down with China to draft and agree on a protocol to resolve immediately any incident,” he said, adding he hoped talks could start this year.

Shipping Coordinating Committee Meeting

The Shipping Coordinating Committee, sponsored by the State Department, will hold a series of meetings in Washington, D.C. to assist in refining the U.S. position prior to the Diplomatic Conference on the Draft Protocol to the Athens Convention Relating to the Carriage of Passengers and Their Luggage by Sea, 1974. The public meetings will be held on June 26, July 31, September 5, and October 16, 2002.

The limits of compensation will be set by the diplomatic conference. existing IOPC Fund system. Protocol. claims made against the supplementary Fund. laid down in the 1992 Fund Convention. Fund Assembly agrees to this arrangement. Damage, (Fund Convention) 1971 replaced the original Conventions. on the shipowner, up to a set limit. contributions by oil receivers. interests. compensation payable to victims of pollution by oil from oil tankers. enter into force on 1 November 2003. gross tonnage, up from 59.7 million SDR in the 1992 Protocol.
