First European Dual-Fuel Dredger Conversion

Damen Shiprepair & Conversion has signed off on the conversion of a dredger to dual-fuel operation on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and marine gas oil (MGO), and which is powered by MAN 35/44DF engines.The conversion of the ‘Samuel de Champlain’ is the first of its kind in Europe and is part of an EU-supported initiative to promote LNG propulsion in short-sea vessels operating along the European Atlantic coast.The 117m, 8,500m³ trailing suction hopper dredger is owned by Rouen-based GIE Dragages-Ports and operated by Port of Nantes-Saint-Nazaire.

Dredger Converted to Dual-fuel

The first European dredger converted to dual-fuel LNG/MGO propulsion has departed Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque (DSDu) to return to work, 23 months after contract signing. The 117m, 8,500 cu. m. trailing suction hopper dredger Samuel de Champlain is owned by Rouen-based GIE Dragages-Ports and operated by the Port of Nantes-Saint-Nazaire. Damen Converts Dredger to Dual-fuel

Europe’s first conversion of a dredger to dual-fuel capability combining LNG and MGO is close to completion. Damen will deliver a turnkey package that included engineering, procurement and support. The previous propulsion system of Dragages-Ports’ Samuel de Champlain was diesel-electric burning MGO, and so the contract included the change of generators to dual-fuel models and the installation of on board LNG storage facilities. Maritime Reporter & Engineering News examines the flurry of activity perpetuated by the shipbuilding and repair conglomerate.The Damen Shipyards Group reported a turnover of €2 billion in 2017, a year in which it delivered 165 newbuilds, including 64 tugs and workboats, five offshore vessels, 40 high-speed craft and ferries, 12 pontoons and barges, 23 dredging and specialty vessels, 16 vessels for defense and security and five yachts.

Europe’s First LNG Dredger Conversion Underway

Work has kicked off at Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque to convert the trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Samuel de Champlain from diesel-electric propulsion to dual-fuel capability combining marine gas oil (MGO) and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Damen to Convert Dredger to Dual-fuel LNG/MGO

Damen Shiprepair & Conversion has been awarded a contract to undertake the conversion of a dredger to dual-fuel capability combining LNG and MGO – a first of its kind project in Europe. The contract was awarded by Rouen-based GIE Dragages-Ports with regard to its 117m, 8500m³ trailing suction hopper dredger Samuel de Champlain, and the works will take place next year at Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque. The conversion is part of an EU-supported initiative to promote LNG propulsion in short-sea vessels operating along the European Atlantic coast.

Izar Gijon Delivers Two Massive Dredgers

Last December Izar Gijón Shipyard delivered to Jan De Nul the suction dredgers named “Taccola” and “Francesco di Giorgio” ofwith 4.400m3 of capacity each. With a total of eight dredgers delivered in two years, Izar consolidates its position in the construction of these technologically sophisticated ships. Gijón has recently delivered two other dredges for the fFrench company “Dragages Ports”, of with 5.000m3 and 8.500m3 of capacity. Over the last two years, Izar has built dredgers of several sizes at its shipyards in Gijón and Sestao.

With a total of eight dredgers delivered in two years, Izar consolidates its position in the construction of these technologically sophisticated ships. Gijón has recently delivered two other dredges for the fFrench company Dragages Ports, of with 5,000 cu. m. and 8,500 cu. m. of capacity. Over the last two years, Izar has built dredgers of several sizes at its shipyards in Gijón and Sestao. The biggest ones, the Kaishuu and the Juan Sebastian Elcano, with a capacity of 16,000 cu. m. each were built at Sestao Shipyard which also built the Filippo de Brunelleschi, and the Francis Beaufort with a capacity of 11,500 cu.

Krupp Business Unit Receives Hopper Dredger Order

The Marine Technology Lübeck Business Unit of Krupp Fördertechnik GmbH has been granted an order to build two trailing suction hopper dredgers for the French harbor authority Dragages-Ports. The order encompasses the complete engineering package, as well as the delivery of the dredging components for one 5,000 cu. m and 8,500 cu. m hopper suction dredger. Measuring 341 x 384 ft. (104 x 117 m), the vessels will be known as the largest to operate in France. With Krupp Fördertechnik assuming system responsibility for both vessels, the 5,000 cu. m dredger will work on the Seine River while the 8,500 cu m vessel will operate on the Loire.

A new niche for Alstom to equip the first 8,500 cu. m. hopper dredge with electric propulsion. Alstom Power Conversion has been awarded a contract by E.N. Bazan-Juliana Constructora Gijonesa SA to equip the new 8,500 cu. m. hopper dredge for Dragages-Ports. Alstom will supply diesel electric power and propulsion systems including main generators, a 6.6 kV switchboard, distribution transformers and two synchronous motors each of 2,500 kW @ 1,500 rpm supplied through synchroconverters. This 8,500 cu. m. hopper dredge will be the first worldwide to be equipped with electric propulsion. This new dredge will operate in France from Summer 2002.

GIE Dragages Ports Take Delivery of TSHD

French owner GIE Dragages Ports recently took delivery of a 5,000 m3 TSHD (Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger), built at Spanish IZAR Gijon shipyard with yard number C365 and named Daniel Laval. This self-propelled trailing suction hopper dredger is intended to operate in water depths ranging from 1 to 3 meters under the keel, and mainly in the Seine river estuary and in Dunkerque, according to shipowner sources. The order was placed on May 24, 2000, and delivered on February 26th, taking 21 months to be built. Jacques Paul, member of the board of GIE Dragages Ports, told French magazine ŒLe Marin¹ that out of the shorlisted shipbuilders French Chantiers de l¹Atlantique…

Gijon Delivers Another Dredger

IZAR Gijon Shipyard recently delivered an 8,500 m3 Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD). It is the second dredging vessel built by Gijon for Dragages Ports, an agency of the French Public Works ministry. DANIEL LAVAL and delivered on February 26 this year. SAMUEL DE CHAMPLAIN is already operated in river Loire, in France, according to shipowner sources. with a trailing side suction pipe with underwater dredge pump on starboard and bottom valves for load dumping. The accommodation deckhouse and the wheelhouse are located at the bow of the ship. A machinery deckhouse is located at the stern of the ship. The dredger availability is superior to 7000 hours per year.
