In a first, Brazilian oil company Petrobras last week reportedly sold the P-32 FPSO for sustainable recycling in Brazil, paving the way for the development of the local ship recycling industry.The sale of the floating unit P-32 reportedly took place on July 7, 2023. In a collaboration supervised by Petrobras, the steel company Gerdau S.A. and shipyard Ecovix have been entrusted with the responsible and environmentally sound recycling of the FPSO."This decision marks the first time a commercial vessel at the end of its lifecycle will be dismantled in Brazil.

The vessel "Dagestan" with a length of 154.5 and a width of 18.3 meters was built in 1984 in Pula, the former Yugoslavia (currently Croatia). It was decided to repair and upgrade the ferry "Dagestan", withdrawn from operations 5 years ago. Modernization of the ferry, which is one of the unique vessels of its time, was completely executed by the engineering and technical personnel of the Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company at the "Zigh" Ship Repair and Construction Yard. It should be noted that the project of modernization, the first in the history of the Shipping Company, was also developed by the personnel of the Shipping Company. Whole ferry management systems have been modernized. One of the main works is performed in the engine room.

Tropical Storm Harvey bore down on Louisiana on Wednesday, pouring down more water after setting rainfall records in Texas that caused catastrophic flooding and paralyzed the U.S. energy hub of Houston. The storm that first came ashore on Friday as the most powerful hurricane to hit Texas in more than 50 years has killed at least 17 people and forced tens of thousands to leave their deluged homes. Damage has been estimated at tens of billions of dollars, making it one of the costliest U.S. natural disasters. There is some relief in sight for Houston, the fourth most populous U.S. city, with forecasters saying five days of torrential rain may come to an end as the storm picks up speed and leaves the Gulf of Mexico region later in the day.

As per the directives of Government of India, the ‘Swachhta Pakhwada” (fortnight-long cleanliness) activities are being executed on priority basis by V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust. As per the scheduled Swachh Pakhwada Action Plan, today, on 20.03.2017, color washing and paintings of residential buildings and structures of Harbour Estate were carried out as per the colour code to ensure healthy environment. Signage boards and posters have also been placed in areas of waste generation and handling. Action has also been taken to clean and repair the drainage systems available in the Port operational areas and Residential areas. Maersk Line said on Friday it had chosen four shipbreaking yards along India's Alang beaches to handle an increase in vessels that need to be scrapped, to the dismay of some organisations that say the operations there are polluting and unsafe. The world's largest container shipper says the four yards in the Alang coast of western India have been certified according to the Hong Kong Convention -- health, safety and environmental standards developed by the International Maritime Organisation.

Every year up to 1,500 ships are recycled to rejuvenate the world leet and reclaim valuable materials such as steel, aluminium and copper. The majority of these vessels are recycled in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China and Turkey. Conditions at shipbreaking yards vary. Personal protection equipment such as helmets, shoes, gloves and masks is not always available. Hazardous materials, from heavy metals to fuel oil, may leak into the sea and soil, polluting the area and creating serious health hazards.

Jay Cashman, Inc., Quincy, Massachusetts, is being awarded a $14,321,000 firm-fixed-price contract for USS Constitution, Berth 1 pier repairs at Charlestown Navy Yard. This project will provide a safe mooring for USS Constitution and the provision of safe visitor access to the ship. The work includes demolition, removal and disposal of existing site features, hazardous materials, waterfront structures, utility systems and the provision of steel sheet pile bulkhead, pile supported pier, fender systems, mooring hardware, mooring dolphins, grading, paving and cobblestone pavement, drainage systems, water systems, electric power and lighting systems, landscape features, and incidental related work.

Chinese National Ship Recycling Association (CNSA) delegates attend Germanischer Lloyd’s (GL) workshop in Hamburg. Participants met for a workshop which focussed on standards, training, and research and development. The CNSA delegation was headed by its president, Mr Xie Dehua, whose address examined the approach China industry was taking to improve standards and promote environmentally friendly ship recycling. All 61 member yards of CNSA offer environmentally friendly recycling facilities, using either dry dock or floating methods.

USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) is scheduled to leave dry dock in May for a pierside location after spending nearly two years in Dry Dock 11 at Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard. Lt. Cmdr. Chris Majors, Carl Vinson damage control assistant said placing 90,000 tons of metal in water and expecting it to float is no small feat, but the crew of Carl Vinson is teaming up with Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard employees to ensure proper preparations are made for the ship's transition to a pierside location. “Getting water on the hull again is going to take a lot of preparation and hard work from our crew,” said Majors. Much of that hard work and expertise by the ship's force will come from the Sailors of Carl Vinson's engineering department.
