Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative Launched

Industry leaders and non-profit the Sustainable Shipping Initiative announced the launch of the Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative’s (SRTI) online platform - a tool for sharing information on ship recycling to drive responsible practice.According to a press release, the platform comes nine months after a group of shipping companies first announced their collective effort to use the market-drivers that transparency brings to make responsible ship recycling the norm. Demanding transparency holds the shipping industry to account, raising the bar for current practice as well as creating fair competition among ship-owners.In 2017, 835 ships were recycled out of a world fleet of 50,000.

Zero Emission Ships: Comparing Fuel Choices

There's a new report out from the Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) -- authorted by Lloyds Register (LR) and University Maritime Advisory Services (UMAS) -- that examines different fuel options and costs as increasingly the world's oceangoing fleet is pushed toward decarbonization. As a back drop, as Mariitme Reporter & Engineering News reports in its May 2018 edition with its cover feature interview with Kitack Lim, Secretary General of the International Mariitme Organization (IMO), the IMO mandate is to cut emissions 50% by 2050, as agreed in mid-April 2018, as compared to 2008 levels.

Australian Navy Saves Jellyfish Sting Victim

A rapid response by Royal Australian Navy patrol boat HMAS Pirie’s crew may have saved the life of a crew member onboard an Australian fishing vessel, the Australian Department of Defense announced. The Armidale Class patrol boat was conducting border protection operations when the ship received an urgent call for assistance from a fishing vessel stating a Darwin resident was believed to have been stung by a highly venomous Box Jellyfish, (Chironex fleckeri) while recovering nets near Bigge Island in the Kimberley region.

Kraken Announced Executive Appointments

USS Kauffman Deploys for the Last Time

The guided-missile frigate USS Kauffman (FFG 59), departed Naval Station Norfolk today for the ship's final deployment and will operate in the U.S. 4th Fleet area of responsibility. Kauffman's final deployment also marks the last scheduled deployment by any Oliver Hazard Perry-Class frigate and in September the ship will be the last operationally-active frigate to decommission. At that time, the only remaining frigate in the U.S. Navy will be USS Constitution, Navy's ambassador that was launched in 1797 and remains the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world. During Kauffman's final deployment, the crew will support the United States Southern Command and the Joint Interagency Task Force South's Operation Martillo.

Standing on the naming platform with the ship's Captain Tony Draper, The Duchess of Cambridge pronounced, "I name this ship 'Royal Princess'. The Duchess then cut the rope that sent a giant Nebuchadnezzar-size bottle of Moet & Chandon champagne toward the ship, officially welcoming Royal Princess into the fleet of Princess Cruises at the Southampton ceremony. Internationally renowned percussive orchestra Mass Ensemble performed with its signature "Earth Harp," an architectural instrument with strings that extended 1,000 feet and was played as it hovered over the nearly 2,000 ceremony guests.

The America’s Cup World Series, San Francisco, is part of what is being billed as the busiest week of events in the city’s history. “We have a challenging program this week,” said regatta director Iain Murray. “We’re working with Fleet Week, so most of our racing will be later in the day. On Super Sunday we’ll be participating in the air show with Fleet Week. The air show will start and then stop, we’ll sail our Super Sunday fleet race (scheduled to start at 1:55 pm PDT), and then the air show will resume.

Princess Cruise Lines Appoint Senior Officers for New Ship

When the new Royal Princess launches in June 2013, Captain Tony Draper will be in command of Princess Cruises ’ newest vessel, leading a senior officer team with more than 100 years of seagoing experience among them. The senior four-stripe team will also include Relief Captain Dino Sagani, Chief Engineer Fabio Braccelli, Hotel General Manager Dirk Brand, and Staff Captain Tim Stringer. The 3,600-passenger Royal Princess is a new-generation ship currently under construction in Italy that will debut a number of new features for Princess, including a dramatic over-water SeaWalk, a 50 percent larger atrium, a new Princess Live! television studio, and balconies on all outside staterooms.

Marine Diesel Engines Replaced in British Warship

New Caterpillar C32 ACERT engines are being installed into HMS Chiddingfold during upgrade work being carried out by BAE Systems in Portsmouth to replace her old Rolls-Royce Deltics which have been used in the Royal Navy's minor war vessels for decades. The work is part of a major mid-life upgrade of the Navy's eight Hunt Class minehunters being carried out by BAE Systems in Portsmouth. The programme will enhance and significantly extend the lives of the eight ships, maintaining their position as some of the most capable mine countermeasures vessels in the world.

New Navy Contract

The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory is being awarded Modification P00006 under contract (N00030-08-C-0010) in the amount of $117,385,862 for Trident II (D5) guidance system repair, guidance system parts and MK6LE. This modification increases the total contract value to $298,318,107. Work will be performed in the following locations: Cambridge, Mass., (43 precent), Pittsfield, Mass., (38 precent), El Segundo, Calif., (12 precent), Clearwater, Fla., (5 precent), and Andover, Mass., (2 precent) and is expected to be completed by 30 Sept. 2011.  This contract was not competitively procured.  The Navy's Strategic Systems Programs, Arlington, Va., is the contracting agency. Kongsberg Maritime has acquired the Draper, based technology enterprise Global Sim for approximately $19.6m. Global Sim delivers products and services in the field of crane simulation for the training of crane operators around the world, and holds a market leader position in maritime crane simulation. The acquisition extends Kongsberg Maritime's portfolio and will further strengthen the company's position as a leader within the field of Maritime Simulation and Training. Houston Pilots Association To Christen M/V Bayou City

The Houston Pilots Association will christen the pilot boat M/V Bayou City at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at the Port of Houston Authority's Sam Houston Pavilion located at 7300 Clinton Drive. and Commissioner Janiece Longoria; members of the Houston Pilots Association, elected officials, maritime industry officials and community leaders. "This will be a momentous occasion for the port and the entire Houston Ship Channel industry base," said Capt. Mike Morris, presiding officer of the pilots. The $6 million M/V Bayou City vessel measures 72 feet in length with a breadth of 43 feet. It has a depth of 16 feet, a draft ranging from 10 to 12 feet, and can travel at a top speed of 21 knots. with two 4,000-horsepower Caterpillar Series 3412 engines that have a fuel capacity of 7,500 gallons.

USN Awards 391 Contractors

The U.S. Navy is awarding indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity multiple award contracts to 391 contractors that will provide for their competition for service requirements solicited by Naval Sea Systems Command, Naval Air Systems Command, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, Naval Supply Systems Command, Military Sealift Command, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Strategic Systems Programs, and the United States Marine Corps.
