General Dynamics NASSCO has started construction on the second ship in a two-ship series of Kanaloa-class containerships for Matson Navigation Company, Inc. Construction of Matsonia began with a ceremonial first cut of steel at NASSCO's San Diego shipyard where the first ship in the series, Lurline, is 15 percent complete. Both ships will transport containers, automobiles and rolling stock between the West Coast of the United States and Hawaii. Using proven design standards, the ship design incorporates liquefied natural gas-capable main and auxiliary engines, which are compliant with Tier III emission requirements. Future installation of a LNG fuel gas system can be accommodated on the 870-foot-long, 3,500 TEU platform combination container and roll-on/roll-off ("Con-Ro") vessels.

GTT and Korean naval engineering company DSEC have signed a Technical Assistance and License Agreement for the construction of GTT membrane containment systems. This deal addresses the requirement of clients wishing to fit membrane type liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel tanks to all types of vessels (cruise vessels, container ships, bulk carriers or roll-on / roll-off ferries, etc.). Moreover, DSEC is already recognised for its ability to implement complete solutions including FGSS (Fuel Gas Supply System) and CHS (Cargo Handling System) systems. With this new cooperation, which broadens the spectrum of GTT industrial partners, shipyards no longer have to acquire the know-how required for the construction of GTT membranes and of LNG handling systems.

The Palmetto State, the eighth and final tanker to be constructed at General Dynamics NASSCO as part of a dual-customer program, has recently returned from its first run at sea. The Palmetto State and her sister ships are the most fuel-efficient tankers to service the Jones Act trade, according to NASSCO, who built all of the vessels at its San Diego shipyard and partnered with South Korean ship designer Daewoo Ship Engineering Company (DSEC) for the vessels’ design. With an “ECO” design, the tankers offer 33 percent increased fuel efficiency and cleaner shipping options.

U.S. shipbuilder General Dynamics NASSCO has delivered the third and final ship for SEA-Vista LLC as part of the builder’s larger eight-ship ECO Class tanker program. The LNG-conversion-ready Jones Act tanker Liberty was delivered on March 1, and is the last of three 610-foot-long, 50,000 deadweight-ton product carriers ordered by SEA-Vista in 2013. The construction program began in November 2014, and the first two ships, Independence and Constitution, have been delivered and are servicing the Jones Act trade. Each of the three ECO Class tankers features 330,000 barrel cargo capacity.

U.S. shipbuilder General Dynamics NASSCO said it has sent the newly built Jones Act tanker Liberty to sea for testing and trials. The 610-foot-long Liberty set sail for the first time on Monday, February 20 to undergo sea trials before delivery later this year. Liberty is the third and final tanker to be constructed as part of the ECO Class program for SEACOR. The three vessels are each 50,000 deadweight ton LNG-conversion-ready product carriers with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity. Marking its seventh ship delivery in the span of just over a year, General Dynamics NASSCO has delivered the newly built ECO Class tanker Garden State for American Petroleum Tankers. Garden State was delivered during a special signing ceremony and is one of three classes of ships delivered by the San Diego-based shipyard since June of last year. “In the past year, NASSCO shipbuilders have delivered seven ships – or the equivalent to 100,000 tons worth of steel,” said Kevin Graney, vice president and general manager for General Dynamics NASSCO.

Navantia and Maritime Transport Ondimar LDA (shipping company Ibaizabal Group) today ratified the contracts signed in late June and the financial structure for the construction of 4 Suezmax tankers, expandable to two. 4 boats will involve 3 million hours of work for Navantia and the auxiliary industry of shipyards in the Bay of Cadiz and Ferrol estuary. The ships will be built in Spain at international market price for this type of vessel, giving stability to the workload of Navantia, promoting job creation and the national industry. General Dynamics NASSCO informs it has hosted a keel laying ceremony for the first Jones Act ECO tanker currently under construction for SEA-Vista LLC, at the company's shipyard in San Diego. Eric Fabrikant, chief operating officer of SEACOR Holdings Inc., served as the ceremony’s honoree and authenticated the keel by welding his initials onto a steel plate during the ceremony. The steel plate with his initials will be permanently affixed to the ship's keel and will remain with the vessel throughout its time in service. The ECO tanker is the first of a three-tanker contract between General Dynamics NASSCO and SEA-Vista, which calls for the design and construction of three 50,000 deadweight ton LNG-conversion-ready product carriers with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity.

General Dynamics NASSCO launched the 3,100 teu Isla Bella, the world’s first LNG-powered containership. More than 3,400 shipbuilders, their families, and others attended the special event at the San Diego-based shipyard. After christening by Sophie Sacco — wife of Michael Sacco, president of the Seafarers International Union — the 754-foot-long Isla Bella slid into San Diego Bay on the high tide at 9:10 p.m. Fireworks erupted as the ship floated. The containership, part of a two-ship contract, was built for TOTE at what is the last major yard still in existence on the US west coast. The Isla Bella was also NASSCO’s 100th launch.
