The NYPD’s Harbor Unit ordered from Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corp.,  five new patrol boats, three 61-footers and two 70-footers. The yard has previously built more than a dozen patrol boats and a fireboats for operation in New York Harbor. The first high-speed patrol boat, designed by C. Raymond Hunt and outfitted for the unit’s dive team, features the shipyard’s Chesapeake Class pilot boat deep-V hull. The new boat measures 61-ft. on deck, with a 17-ft. beam and 3-ft. draft. Unique to this hull design is the squared-off bow, with fendering and knees raised above the main deck to facilitate bow landings. The heated forward-leaning windows in the front and the side and aft windows on the flush-mounted pilothouse offer 360-degree visibility of search and rescue operations.

Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corp., is increasing its metal fabrication capabilities by about 30 percent at its six-acre shipyard on the Taunton River in Somerset, Massachusetts. Construction is underway of a new 12,000 sq. ft. fabrication building, measuring 107 x 110 x 40 ft. (clear height). The heated building will house two 50-foot bays for the manufacture of modules of vessels or complete vessels, weighing as much as 100 tons. Each bay will be equipped with a 5-ton crane overhead for easy movement of modules, materials and equipment through a 50 ft.-wide sliding door.

Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. announced at the International Workboat Show in New Orleans that an agreement was reached to form an international consortium to respond to a Department of Defense (DoD) acquisition program for the Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV). The JHSV program brings together Navy, Army, Marines, and SOCOM to pursue a multi-use platform. The JHSV is a new generation, multi-use platform capable of transporting troops and their equipment, supporting humanitarian relief efforts, the ability to operate in shallow waters and can reach speed in access of 35 knots fully loaded. Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, The Duclos Corp., has delivered its 11th police boat for the New York City Police Department. The new high-speed, all-aluminum deep V-hull, which measures 13 ft. abeam and draws 3.5 ft., is powered by twin Caterpillar 3208-TA diesel engines, each rated for 435 bhp @ 2,800 rpm, with a top speed in excess of 30 knots. The engines drive two 32-in. nickel-bronze propellers via Twin Disc 3:1 reverse/reduction gears and stainless steel shafts. The vessel features extremely robust hull scantlings and shear guard. Engine water is circulated under the decks to keep them ice-free. The boat's transom is equipped with a door, leading to a fold-down rescue platform. Onboard accommodations, for a crew of four, include a small galley, enclosed head and two bunks.

Measuring 175 ft. in length, dinner cruise vessel Starship was recently delivered to Starship Cruise Lines of Biloxi, Miss. Boasting a mega-yacht style, the vessel was designed by Naval Architects Dejong & Lebet of Jacksonville, Fla., and constructed by Freeport, Fla.-based Freeport Shipbuilding. Plachter-Vogel Design provided interior architecture. USCG-Certified under Subchapter K for 600 passengers, plus 30 crew, Starship carries a Stability Letter for Partially Protected waters. The vessel is designed to have a 5-5.6 ft. full load draft enabling it to access some of the Biloxi area's more shallow waterways. The hull features tunnels to allow large enough propellers while minimizing the draft.
