Exceptional (Market) Reach Lifts a Crane Retrofit to Success

The New York State Canal System, Advance Marine and MelCal Cranes all enjoy a reputation for versatile applications in challenging conditions. It’s no wonder that their recent deal to replace an aging maintenance crane was also a similarly good fit. When Advance Marine recently delivered a telescopic boom crane to New York State Canals, the decision regarding which type and brand of crane to select wasn’t made in a vacuum, nor was it made lightly. That’s because commercial utilization of America’s original superhighway – the Erie Canal – is on the rise again. The New York State Canal System is a 524-mile long, commercially viable waterway connecting the Hudson River with the Great Lakes, Finger Lakes, and Lake Champlain.

Global Scrubber System Market to Reach USD 1.86 bln by 2023

The global scrubber system market is estimated at USD 1.02 billion in 2018 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 12.82% to reach USD 1.86 billion by 2023. The global market is likely to grow significantly due to growing stringent environmental regulations to reduce atmospheric emissions, said a market research from Reportlinker. Although restraints like stringent legislations against disposal of contaminated effluents from scrubber systems are being observed, International Maritime Organization's (IMO) 2020 global sulfur cap is expected to create better opportunities for the scrubber system market. Contamination from heavy metals found in scrubber washwater is expected to be a major challenge for the growth in the scrubber system market.

Louisiana Dredging Outlook

Photo: Magnolia Dredge

When maritime stakeholders think about dredging, they typically first conjure up visions of harbor deepening projects to accommodate those giant, post-Panamax boxships. Conversely, inland players hope for maintenance dredging in the heartland to keep the nation’s 31,000 cargo barges afloat as they head for the coast. But, there is much more to it than that. In Louisiana, dredging, of course, keeps Louisiana's waterways open for navigation, provides material for coastal restoration and helps industrial plants with drainage. The biggest projects are sponsored by the U.S.

Scrubbers Set to Help Shippers Meet the New Sulfur Cap

The 0.5 percent global sulfur cap by 2020 requires marine industry action. “By 2025, up to 20 percent of the global fleet could have [scrubber] technology installed,” estimates DuPont Clean Technologies Marine Business Development Manager, Europe, Marco Dierico. “Ship owners and operators that want to minimize costly changes and continue to burn heavy fuel oil (HFO) will require a scrubber to clean the fuel. The October 27 decision from the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) to enforce a global 0.5 percent cap on sulfur emissions from fuels by 2020 will necessitate ship owners and operators to select an emissions abatement solution in order to meet the new requirements.

First Multi-stream DuPont Scrubbers Installed

DuPont, through its subsidiary Belco Technologies Corporation (BELCO), is installing the first of its proprietary in-line, multi-engine marine scrubbers serving three auxiliary engines on two newbuild bulk carriers. DuPont has submitted a patent application for this scrubber inlet configuration which connects multiple exhaust sources at the bottom of a single in-line scrubber tower with minimal space requirements. This proprietary design minimizes turbulence and back-pressure of entering exhaust, allowing multiple exhaust streams to take advantage of a single slim in-line scrubber tower without the need for large-footprint fans or venturis. “The DuPont Marine Scrubber design has always been in-line, and now we extend our low back-pressure, no-fans philosophy to the multi-stream design.
