The Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Guy Ryder, has called for a definitive and durable solution for the thousands of migrant workers who risk their lives in a search of a decent future. “Stopgap measures to halt the flows of migrants only scratch the surface of the problem. We need to go deeper into the root causes that force people to put their lives in danger in order to find work and security in foreign lands,” said Ryder. China on Wednesday rejected an arbitration tribunal's ruling giving it six months to respond to a case filed by the Philippines over disputed waters, saying it has no plans to take part. China claims almost the entire South China Sea, rejecting rival claims to parts from Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei in one of Asia's most intractable disputes and a possible flashpoint. It also has a separate maritime dispute with Japan over islands in the East Sea. Global coatings supplier Hempel has launched HEMPAGUARD, a new hull coating concept for the shipping industry, which Hempel said offers both outstanding resistance to fouling during idle periods and significant fuel savings. The technology, dubbed ActiGuard, has been five years in development and is based on silicone-hydrogel and biocide science.
