Alfa Laval: New Test Facilities, New Technologies

Heat transfer, separation and fluid handling technology specialist, Alfa Laval, has expanded its Test & Training Center in Aalborg, Denmark with a new gas testing facility. Inert Gas Systems Produces Significant Fuel Savings

The Alfa Laval Automatic Fuel Efficiency Module (AFEM) is a new modification for reducing the fuel consumption of Alfa Laval Smit Combustion inert gas systems. It does so by ensuring the inert gas that keeps cargo safe during offloading is only generated in the exact amounts required. In a two-year pilot project, the AFEM allowed Italian shipping company Navigazione Montanari S.p.A. to achieve an average fuel savings of 30 percent. Based in Fano on the Adriatic Sea, Navigazione Montanari owns and manages a fleet of 21 tankers.

Belships 4Q Results

Belships fourth quarter operating income was $18.98, versus $7.8 million in 4Q 2002. The company's operating result totaled $4.2m. The operating income and operating result were affected by a strong dry bulk market. The product carrier business generated an operating result of $133,000 in the fourth quarter. The gas carrier business generated an operating result of $740,000 in the same period. The improvement is primarily due to the fact that, because of previous write-downs, there was no depreciation posted for the quarter. The dry bulk business generated an operating result for the fourth quarter of $4.1m. The positive results of Elkem Chartering (EC) have already been reported.

Shell Charter Named Asprella

A new 10,000-dwt product carrier specially built with a shallow draft was built at the Frisian Shipyard, Welgelegen in the Netherlands, and named Asprella. The double-hulled vessel, leased from Pritchard Gordon Tankers Ltd. and chartered by Shell, is purpose built for shallow draft trade, and will be employed by Shell for trade on South American Rivers for Shell's activities based in the Caribbean. "Asprella will enable Shell to continue developing its strenght in the niche product market for specailist vessels, thereby adding value to the bottom line," said Jeff Jarman, Shipping Portfolio Manager for Shell Trading, as quoted in the April edition of Shell's house magazine. Asprella was named by Elisabeth De Cuba, wife of John De Cuba, who was, until recently, G.M.

The Delaware River Pilots Association recently contracted with Carey's Diesel to repower a vessel with a pair of Isotta Fraschini marine diesel engines, rated at 550 hp @ 2,400 rpm. This is the third vessel the Pilots Association has chosen to repower using Isotta Fraschini engines. The first Isotta Fraschini repowers were two 56,000-lb. vessels named Wilmington and Delaware. Wilmington's two 8V-72T Detroit Diesel two-cycle, eight cylinder engines were replaced with two V1308T2 MLH Isotta Fraschini four-stroke, V-8 cylinder marine diesel engines. Delaware's two 8V-92 Detroit Diesel two-cycle, eight cylinder engines were replaced with a pair of V1312T2 MLH Isotta Fraschini four-stroke, V-12 cylinder marine diesel engines.

OMI Corp. Acquires Vessels

OMI Corp. has agreed to attain two 47,000-dwt product carriers from another owner that are currently under construction at Onimichi Dockyard in Japan. The vessels will be delivered to the company in September and late November 2000, upon which they will commence two time charters to an oil company. The company has also agreed to sell the 29,996-dwt product carrier Tiber, which was built in 1989, and is the last of its Polish built vessels.

OMI Takes Delivery of Tamar

OMI Corporation of Stamford, Conn., has taken delivery of the vessel TAMAR, a 70,100 dwt product carrier built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. Upon delivery the vessel commenced a five year time charter to a subsidiary of BP. Craig H. Stevenson, Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer commented that, "we are pleased to strengthen our relationship with BP, which also chartered the OTTAWA, a sister ship in May of this year for a 5 year period."

OMI Reports Q3 Loss of $7M

OMI Corporation announced a net loss of $7,119,000 for the quarter ended Sept. 30. The net loss for the nine months ended Sept. 30 was $37,555,000 after income from the cumulative effect of change in accounting principle of $2,729,000. Net loss for the nine months ended Sept. 30 includes a $23,574,000 loss on disposal/write down of vessels, $6,229,000 provision for loss on lease obligation and $1,114,000 loss on the disposal/write down of two joint ventures. Net income for the quarter and nine months ended Sept. 30, 1998 was $8,043,000 and $47,582,000, respectively, which includes a gain on the disposal of a vessel of $6,625,000 and a reversal of deferred income taxes in the amount of $38,887,000. During 1999, OMI changed its method of accounting for freight on voyage charters.
