Obituary: Norman N. DeJong, Naval Architect, Innovator

DeJong & Lebet, Inc. announced that Norman N. DeJong passed away on November 7, 2013. Norman was 75 years old at the time of his passing. Norman was one of the founding partners of DeJong & Lebet, Inc., Naval Architects, in 1983 in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born in Blokker, Noord Holland, the Netherlands, immigrating to the US after earning a BS in Naval Architecture at HTS Haarlem in 1959. He worked at Phillip F. Spaulding in Seattle, and NASSCO in San Diego before moving to Jacksonville, FL to work at Gibbs / Aerojet General in 1963.

Horizon Names Hamlin EVP & COO

Bill Hamlin, Executive Vice President And Chief Operating Officer.

Horizon Lines, Inc. has announced that William A. Hamlin has been named Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. In his new role, Mr. Hamlin will continue to report to Sam Woodward, President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Hamlin joined Horizon Lines in March 2011 as Senior Vice President of Operations. His responsibilities include ocean transportation services, inland transportation, terminals, equipment management, maintenance, network management, labor relations, security, safety and environmental.

Delta "T" Offers Marine Hook Load Testing

A review of resources on the world wide web will quickly produce an abundance of material and statistics on the hazards of marine hook use on life boats, fast response craft, tenders and other vessels. Accidents, injuries and fatalities are far too common when it comes to the operation of marine davit launching systems. Surprisingly, accidents which occur during drills often dominate the statistics, with the second-highest accident counts found during surveys and equipment maintenance events.

Coast Guard Honors Protectors of Marine Environment

The U.S. Coast Guard announced the seven recipients of the 2010 Biennial Rear Adm. William M. Benkert, Marine Environmental Protection Award for Excellence, during an awards program at the American Petroleum Institute Tanker Conference held in San Diego. The award recognizes companies involved in marine facility or vessel operations that have demonstrated sustained excellence and outstanding achievement in protecting the marine environment. It also encourages innovations in operations, maintenance, cargo handling, refueling, training, and provides a means for award recipients to share their successful methods and techniques with others in industry. Kobelco Polyglycol Lubricant Receives Patent

Kobelco Eagle Marine Engineering Ltd. (KEMEL) announced that its polyglycol-based stern tube and CPP/thruster gear lubricants ST-77 and TH-100 have recently received a U.S. Patent. Sause Brothers Towing Repowers Ocean Tug

Based in Coos Bay Oregon, Sause Brothers Towing has been towing between Pacific Northwest and Southern Californian ports for over 50 years. In the past 30 years they have also become noted for their long ocean tows from the US west coast to Hawaii and beyond to the South Pacific. The family-owned company currently operates a fleet of 32 ocean and harbor tugs as well as 24 general cargo and oil barges. A new double-hulled 105,000-barrel oil barge, Sunset Bay, is currently alongside at the company shipyard in Coos Bay.

Sause Brothers Towing Repowers Ocean Tug

Based in Coos Bay Oregon, Sause Brothers Towing has been towing between Pacific Northwest and Southern Californian ports for over 50 years. A new double-hulled 105,000-barrel oil barge, Sunset Bay, is currently alongside at the company shipyard in Coos Bay. With the hull built at the Gunderson yard in Portland it is being outfitted by Sause. Also at the yard, the ocean going tug Powhatan is undergoing an extensive repower that will see a pair of 850 HP engines replaced with a pair of Cummins KTA50 M2 mains each rated for 1500 HP at 1800 RPM. A new pair of Reintjes WAF772 marine gears with 7.45:1 ratios have also been installed in the 105x30-foot tug.

New Directors Named at NOL

Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) has appointed Ang Kong Hua and Willie Cheng Jue Hiang, to the Board of Directors, and confirmed Ron Widdows as CEO of its container transportation unit, APL. Ang Kong Hua becomes a Vice Chairman of the Board, joining Dr Friedbert Malt in this role, and will sit on both the Board’s Executive Committee and Nominating Committee. Willie Cheng Jue Hiang will serve on the Audit Committee in addition to his responsibilities as a member of the full Board. NOL Group Chairman Cheng Wai Keung said both Ang Kong Hua and Mr Willie Cheng offered a valuable breadth of skills and management experience in the global business arena. Mr Ang Kong Hua is President of NatSteel, a listed Singapore-based manufacturing group.
