A fire broke out aboard a U.S. Navy amphibious dock landing ship USS Gunston Hall (LSD 44) at approximately 2 p.m. yesterday while the ship was undergoing maintenance at NASSCO/Earl Industries shipyard in Portsmouth, Va. Sailors aboard the vessel and the Portsmouth, Virginia, Fire and Rescue Department responded, declared the fire out at approximately 5:25 p.m. According to the U.S. Navy, initial reports indicate that the fire began in an unmanned storeroom below the main deck. All personnel were accounted for, the Navy said.

US Department of Defense inform it has awarded a $19,802,857 firm-fixed-price contract to Earl Industries, LLC, doing business as General Dynamics NASSCO Mayport, Jacksonville, Florida, for docking phased maintenance availability to include drydocking, hull plating replacement, propulsion engine removal and habitability work onboard 'USS Tornado' (PC 14). The docking phased maintenance availability work on USS Tornado consists of 55 percent hull structure repairs, 16 percent propulsion repairs, 11 percent paint/decking and preservation, and 8 percent auxiliary pumps and systems. The remaining 10 percent miscellaneous repairs consist of temporary services, electrical and electronic repairs. DoD adds that the basic work package consists of 89 work items.

Contracts have been awarded by the U.S. Department of Defense to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock, NASSCO-Mayport, Timken Gears & Services Inc., and Colonna's Shipyard, Inc. Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co., Oak Brook, Illinois, was awarded a $25,376,872 firm-fixed-price contract for dredging the main channel of the Delaware River. Work will be performed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with an estimated completion date of March 31, 2015. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is the contracting activity. Earl Industries L.L.C. doing business as NASSCO-Mayport, Jacksonville, Florida, is being awarded a not-to-exceed $23,238,392 undefinitized contract action for continuous maintenance availability to include structural damage and aluminum welding onboard USS Hue City (CG 66).

Included in the latest list of US Department of Defense contracts are those for a USACE Mississippi River dredging operation, and a Navy contract for the phased maintenance of the 'USS San Antonio'. The US Department of Defense has issued General Dynamics-NASSCO Earl Industries, Portsmouth, Va., an $82,481,992 undefinitized contract as a modification to a previously awarded contract (N00024-11-C-4303) for the 'USS Eisenhower' (CVN 69) fiscal 2013 planned dry-docking. The following ship alterations are to be be carried out: aircraft electrical servicing system station to radar tower; emergency diesel generator 3 and 4 exhaust; disposable air filter outfitting mod; aqueous film forming foam fire extinguisher installation; install 50-man life raft (port side); aviation engine hatch platform modification; remove an accommodation ladder; upgrade security department facilities; upgrade ready room security stowage; medical sterilizer upgrade; close-in weapon system sponson support.

Colonna’s Shipyard, Inc. of Norfolk, Virginia announced the appointment of Charlie Sutton as Director of Operations for its Colonna Down River Division, a rapid response ship repair service provided to vessels wherever the customer needs the service. Sutton is a Norfolk native and longtime waterfront veteran having recently worked as Program Manager at Earl Industries. He brings leadership experience in project management and contract administration to Colonna’s Shipyard along with a knowledge of marine repair experience on all types of commercial and military vessels.

On April 15, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced $14.7m in grant awards to help improve 17 small shipyards in 16 states. The funds will help these shipyards become more competitive by purchasing modern equipment and training workers. “These grants will help modernize small shipyards and strengthen our economy by making sure we maintain the ability to build and repair ships in the United States,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “Small shipyards are an important part of our nation’s shipbuilding industry,” said David Matsuda, Acting Maritime Administrator. The Maritime Administration has awarded a contract to Earl Industries, LLC., of Portsmouth, Va. to provide layberth services for three of the agency’s Ready Reserve Force vessels—Cape Ray, Cape Race, and Cape Rise. Cost of the initial contract award is $2,095, 500 with a total value of $7,415, 100 including options for renewal. The vessels are currently docked at the Earl Industries facility. These roll on/roll off vessels were purchased in 1993 by the Maritime Administration to meet a mobility requirements study. The three ships were re-flagged in the United States during 1993- 1994. The vessels all operate in the same manner with their capacity to load both wheeled and tracked vehicles via the stern ramp and side port.

Tug boats steady the bow of USS George Washington (CVN 73) as the aircraft carrier transits from dry dock to a wet slip. The Norfolk-based Nimitz-class aircraft carrier is currently undergoing Planned Incremental Availability and Docking (PIA+D). The availability will prepare George Washington to relieve USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) as the fleet's forward deployed carrier in 2008. U.S. USS George Washington (CVN 73) (GW) successfully completed its move from the dry dock at Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) to a pierside berth April 25, one week earlier than previously scheduled. The berth shift marks a significant milestone in the Planned Incremental Availability and Docking (PIA+D) period before the ship heads to Japan in 2008.

Earl Industries, LLC, Jacksonville, Fla., is being awarded a $15.3m contract to perform work associated with the decommissioning availability for the USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) to complete the inactivation repair work which includes deactivation of various installed machinery such as pumps, catapult system, elevator, ships service diesel generators, and the boat and aircraft crane; and draining of fluids from installed systems such as cooling water, Aqueous Film Forming Foam firefighting agent, lube oil and fuel oil.Work will be performed aboard the ship at Naval Station Mayport and is expected to be completed by Aug. 2007.Contract funds will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. Multi-Ship Multi-Option (MSMO) cost-plus-award-fee contract with a total evaluated cost of $165.2M. An initial award amount of $39,106 is for the accomplishment of pre-production planning and procurement of long lead time material for repairs to the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) fiscal 2007 Planned Incremental Availability. This contract covers work on four CVN-68 Class Aircraft Carriers, which include Planned Incremental Availabilities, Docking Planned Incremental Availabilities, and scheduled/unscheduled (Continuous Maintenance) repairs.
