Fast-moving Waterfalls in the Deep Sea

New research led by the National Oceanography Center (NOC) has discovered how fast-moving waterfalls under the sea control the shape and behavior of submarine channels. These underwater channels are the offshore equivalents of rivers, but can be much larger. Tankers Flock to US as Freight Rates Surge

A flotilla of oil tankers is sailing empty from Europe and the Mediterranean toward the U.S. Gulf Coast to take advantage of surging shipping rates, according to shipping sources and Refinitiv Eikon data on Monday.Eight tankers, an unusually high number, are in the Atlantic and steaming to the United States, with capacity of up to 5.6 million barrels of oil combined, the people said. Freight rates for Aframax vessels out of the U.S. Gulf coast hit record levels last month, drawing more vessels to the region.The United States exported a record 4.46 million barrels of crude oil per day (bpd) in the week ended Dec. 27, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, as shale producers continued to deliver more oil than U.S.

Teekay Offshore Arranges $550mln Refinance

London-based international law firm Watson Farley & Williams (WFW) advised Teekay Offshore Partners  on two separate fleet refinancings with a combined value of US$550mln.First was a US$100m revolving credit facility (RCF) for the Piranema Spirit, Voyageur Spirit and Petrojarl Varg FPSO units. The previous credit facility matured at the same time with a balloon payment of US$35m.The new facility was funded by commercial banks and bears interest at LIBOR + 300 basis points with a three-year tenor and a profile of 5.5 years.Second was a US$450m RCF for sixteen shuttle tankers. The facility will be used to refinance the existing revolving credit facility dated 8 September 2017 and for general corporate purposes.

Teekay Gets $450mln for Shuttle Tanker Fleet

The midstream services provider to the offshore oil production industry Teekay Offshore Partners announced that in accordance with previously noted financing plans, it has secured a new $450 million revolving credit facility for sixteen shuttle tankers.The facility will be used to refinance the existing revolving credit facility dated September 8, 2017, currently fully drawn with outstanding amount of $445 million, and for general corporate purposes, it said ina press release.The facility is funded by commercial banks and bears interest at LIBOR + 250 basis points with a five-year tenor and a profile of 8.4 years, Teekay added.Teekay Offshore Partners is primarily focused on the ownership and operation of critical infrastructure assets in offshore oil regions of the North Sea…

Teekay Gets Refinance for FPSO Fleet

Containership Ablaze Off Canada's East Coast

German shipping line Hapag Lloyd said on Friday that it was trying to extinguish a fire on its Yantian Express container vessel off Canada's east coast but was being hampered by bad weather.A spokesman for Hapag Lloyd said the fire broke out on Thursday in a container on deck and spread to some other containers on the vessel, but the cause was not yet known.The 7,519 twenty foot equivalent ship was on its way from Colombo, Sri Lanka to Halifax in Nova Scotia via the Suez Canal…

As ongoing commodity price pressures continued to impact overall tonnage volumes through the St. Lawrence Seaway in September, the shipping industry was buoyed by a number of investments in recent weeks by ship operators and ports, according to the Chamber of Marine Commerce, an association representing Canadian and American marine industry stakeholders. “Despite slower iron ore and coal, growth continues on the Seaway in shipments for domestic sectors like construction, salt mining, agriculture and manufacturing,” said Stephen Brooks, President of the Chamber of Marine Commerce.

Pangaea Bags Extensions for two Contracts of Affreightment

Pangaea Logistics Solutions has received extensions for two contracts of affreightment (COA) for dry bulk materials, which it says will generate up to $22m in revenue over the next three years. The extended contracts will also optimally position Pangaea vessels for backhaul routes, the NASDAQ-listed company said. Specifically, a major international aluminum company has agreed to a two year COA extension that will cover 2017 and 2018 and utilize Supramax vessels on a route from Brazil to the east coast of Canada. This extension provides for the shipment of 400,000-500,000 metric tons of cargo per year. Separately, the company announced a one year extension of a COA for the shipment of approximately 850,000 metric tons of pig iron from Brazil to the United States.

Teekay Orders 3 Tankers for Canada Contracts

Teekay Offshore Partners L.P. informs it has entered long-term contracts to provide shuttle tanker services for a group of companies producing oil on Canada’s East Coast, including Chevron Canada, Husky Energy, Mosbacher Operating Ltd., Murphy Oil, Nalcor Energy, Statoil and Suncor Energy. The 15-year contracts, plus extension options, will initially be serviced by one of Teekay Offshore’s existing shuttle tankers, the Navion Hispania, and two to three third party-owned shuttle tankers currently operating in East Coast Canada, which will be chartered-in to Teekay Offshore’s Canadian affiliate located in St. John’s, Newfoundland, prior to the delivery of up to four shuttle tanker newbuildings.

Tanker Demand Picks-up in Canada

Canada’s role in the oil industry has changed dramatically in recent years driven by synthetic crude oil production in the oil sands of Alberta. New plans for Energy East, a cross-Canada West to East pipeline with a capacity of 1,100kb/day are being put forward to allow the movement of diluted domestic oil from the West to the import dependant Eastern provinces. With a light sweet requirement in the Eastern provinces the question might be raised on why there is a need for a pipeline to transport the heavy bituminous oil sands from the West if Eastern refineries could not process them. Suncor are looking to add a coker to their Montreal refinery which would allow for oil sand processing and for East Canada…

Statoil has completed the Martin well in US Gulf of Mexico and the Dilolo well in the Kwanza basin in Angola. Statoil announces a small discovery in its Martin prospect located in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). Statoil does not consider this to be a commercial discovery. The well has been drilled efficiently and plug and abandonment operations (P&A) are now ongoing. Once P&A operations are completed the Maersk Developer rig will move to the impact Perseus prospect in De Soto Canyon (DC) 231.

Damen Pontoon Deliveries Ensure Stock Availability

Last Friday, April 4, a shipment that left China seven weeks ago carrying 13 new Damen Stan Pontoons and 10 other Damen vessels arrived in Rotterdam. The built-for-stock pontoons and vessels will uphold Damen’s ultra-short delivery times as demand rises - 170 deliveries in 2013. This has also led to Damen introducing newly designed barges and completing a number of custom pontoon and barge projects. Damen has sold 37 pontoons and barges in the last two years. Production has increased with an even larger amount of vessels currently under construction at four different yards in the Middle East…

Europe Gasoline Stronger, Exports Brisk

Gasoline barge prices in northwest Europe rose on Friday, boosted by brisk cargo exports as demand builds ahead of the peak summer driving season. "Things are perking up," said one trader. "Big slugs of reformate are heading to Asia again. There is good demand in the east still. West Africa blends are still taking place... Reuters shipping data showed a flurry of new vessels booked to carry gasoline or its components, which include reformates. Cargill booked a tanker to carry gasoline across the Atlantic and Valero booked another for the east coast of Canada, the data showed. BP fixed two vessels to carry gasoline to West Africa and PMI fixed three tankers to Mexico.

Canada: Damen to Deliver 80m Ice Class Ferry

The Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Government has awarded Damen Shipyards Group an order for a state-of-the-art, 80 m Ice Class ferry, which will operate on the Fogo Island-Change Islands service. Scheduled for delivery in September 2015, the 14-knot ro-ro ferry will be able to carry up to 200 passengers and 60 vehicles. The investment in the new ferry is part of the Government’s vessel renewal program. She will replace the aging MV Captain Earl Winsor. Fifteen proposals were received in response to the Government's request for proposals for the construction of new ferry vessels.

Seadrill Limited subsidiary, Seadrill Partners, as part of a settlement agreement, has agreed to non-payment for 37 days hire of the semi-submersible rig 'West Acquarius'. The 37 days off hire were required for the ultra-deepwater harsh environment semi-submersible West Aquarius to complete modifications and repairs in order to meet the regulatory requirements for operations in Canadian waters and for the operator to receive authorization from the Canadian authorities to commence operation. This loss will negatively impact third quarter results.

The Campobello Island Whale Rescue team disentangles whales caught in fishermen's gear and nets around the Bay of Fundy off the east coast of Canada. Campobello Whale Rescue Team began after Mackie Greene witnessed a fin whale wrapped in fishing gear while leading a whale watching trip. Since then he and his team have worked with over 20 whales, risking their lives driving a Zodiac up next to animals that can be 40 to 70 or more feet long, and cutting through the lines entangling them.

Largest Damen Stan Pontoon for McKeil-Malaspina

The largest pontoon ever stock-built by Damen was sold to the Canadian McKeil-Malaspina partnership and will be towed to Newfoundland on the east coast of Canada this summer where it  will be used to support offshore construction operations. The Damen Stan Pontoon 12032 measures 120 x 32.2 meters, has a deadweight capacity of approximately 20,000 tons and a hold of 8.1 meters.
