Islander Crew, Passengers Pull Man from Cold Water

The crew and passengers aboard the ferry Islander rescued Johnny Goodwin, of Southhold, N.Y., within minutes of falling into the cold waters of Gardiners Bay from a work barge on Dec. 19. A combination of skillful seamanship, adherence to Coast Guard safety regulations blended to save Goodwin's life. The Islander and three other ferries from the North Ferry Co. connect Shelter Island with Greenport, on Long Island. The ferries make the two nautical mile round trip from early morning to late night. The Islander was taking a full load of passengers and vehicles to Long Island at dusk when Goodwin fell. One of the passengers aboard the ferry saw Goodwin and alerted ferry captain Edward J.

Long Island Ferry Accident Leaves One Dead

In a freak accident that occurred in the Long Island Sound off the coast of Orient Point, L.I., a 65-ft. tractor-trailer rolled off Cross Sound Ferry's 250-ft. vessel, Susan Ann. The first signs of trouble began the morning of November 19, when according to the Police Department, Town of Southold, L.I., the vehicle, a 1989 Western Star Tractor Trailer with the driver inside, broke free - falling off the rear of the above vessel while in the Plum Gut are of the Long Island Sound — east of its destination — Orient Point. At the time, the vessel was performing a routine crossing from New London, Conn. to Orient Point, L.I. Upon discovery that the vehicle had fallen overboard, the crew of Susan Ann launched a rescue vessel from the ferry to recover the victim, Michael J.

LI Ferry Accident

Coast Guard rescue crews are searching for a missing ferry passenger after two people were reported unaccounted for, and a 65-ft. paving truck fell off the ferry Susan Anne less than one mile off Orient Point, Long Island, N.Y., 10 a.m. today. A crew from a second ferry in the vicinity responded and initially recovered one person from the water deceased. The victim was then transferred by the crew of the Susan Anne to Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, Long Island, N.Y. Names are being withheld until next of kin can be notified. A Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew, two Coast Guard rescue boat crews from Station Montauk and a rescue boat crew from Station New London continue to search for the second passenger.
