Marine electronics group Navico, a literal ‘house of brands’ for the recreational, sail, power and commercial marine markets, is making a strong push in the commercial sector with its Simrad brand. The ascension of Navico in recreational marine electronics business – an estimated $1 billion market globally – was fast and furious, growing from roughly 7% of the global market in 2005 to nearly 30% in 2007, standing steady at about 35% today, fueled by a strategy built on the acquisition of strong brands mixed with organic growth.

Integrated electronic navigation specialist Navico has secured type approval for its SIMRAD MARIS ECDIS900 Mk 5 and Mk 15 electronic chart data information systems (ECDIS) by the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping. Navico’s list of approvals received from the Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute of South Korea has grown following type approval of the latest generation Simrad MARIS ECDIS900 Mk 5 and Mk 15 Electronic Chart Display & Information Systems, joining already approved products such as Simrad Broadband 4G radars, ARGUS antennae, gyrocompasses, autopilots and control and display units. The integrated electronic navigation specialist has secured certificates warranting the new type approvals from KMERI for its IMO type-approved ECDIS navigation systems for use on board merchant vessels.

The right product for the right application is a familiar claim from marine equipment supplier Simrad, but, when compliance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements is at stake, it is a call demanding an immediate response. Compliance with the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention on Electronic Chart Data and Information Systems (ECDIS) is now a matter of urgency. The mandatory phase-in for all internationally trading vessels to be fitted with an ECDIS using Electronic Navigation Charts (ENCs) reached a watershed on July 1, 2015.

Marine navigation and communications specialist MARIS AS, of Norway and Chinese marine electronics company New Sunrise Co., Ltd. (NSR), of Suzhou, have signed an agreement that establishes MARIS as the largest ECDIS original equipment manufacturer in the world. The OEM deal, formalized at December’s Marintec 2013 in Shanghai, will see NSR produce MARIS ECDIS software and supply it in combination with NSR hardware. NSR has developed a PC and Monitor specific to maritime applications.

Norwegian maritime electronics specialist MARIS and Japanese high-tech firm Cornes & Co., Ltd. say they have won their first contract to deliver ECDIS equipment for the entire vessel fleet controlled by an unspecified Tokyo-based ship management company. The order will see MARIS ECDIS900 delivered for 20 bulk carriers, including 12 newbuilds, while installation onboard further bulk carriers is under consideration. Each vessel will be installed with two The MARIS ECDIS900 units.

Marine electronics specialist Maris AS has completed an ECDIS (electronic chart data information systems) technical training program to enhance support services covering North America and the Caribbean. The initiative is part of its commitment to the global distribution and service agreement with IMTECH Marine. Engineers in IMTECH Marine’s service network covering U.S. and Caribbean ports have been trained and certified by MARIS to install, commission and support the MARIS ECDIS900-series.

A run of orders for MARIS has culminated in a 30-system deal covering the delivery of its ECDIS900 system to Turkish customers. The deal highlights the longstanding relationship between MARIS and w marine electronics distribution and service specialist STT International Ltd. It covers existing and future STT requirements to deliver MARIS ECDIS900 to Turkish owners and shipyards. STT reports that the first systems are committed to general cargo vessel newbuildings due delivery to Yildirim Group from the Marmara Shipyard before the end of 2013.

Wärtsilä has become the latest major marine company to specify MARIS hardware and software as part of its product specific training. The MARIS ECDIS900 system is to be installed at the Wärtsilä Land & Sea Training Academy Subic, the engine company’s instruction centre in the Philippines. The agreement is part of a standard cooperation offer from MARIS to provide cost effective product-specific solutions to leading training schools/institutes world-wide. It covers certification, ‘train the trainer’, yearly maintenance of software, software upgrades, documentation, charts and other digital services. Mr Gundersen cited the January 1, 2012 entry into force of the revised STCW Convention and Code, which includes new requirements relating to training in modern technology such as ECDIS.

The co-operation will see HiVe offering tailor made, product specific hands-on training for the MARIS ECDIS, covering electronic charts and updates. The agreement will establish closer co-operation on research. HiVe will run product specific training courses on state of the art equipment, deploying its extensive in-house Maritime competence. HiVe offers a full range of research and development capability. At any given time, approximately 50 persons are involved in Ph.D projects. Duy-Tho Do, Dean of HiVe’s Faculty of Technology and Maritime Sciences, says:  “This is a strategic and valued agreement.

Under the name Royal Denship the Peter Johansen Group is building a series of super luxury yachts for foreign owners. These yachts are being built at several Danish shipyards. The agreement includes deliveries of the following products from MARIS: ARPA2000 Radar/ARPA automatic radar plotting aid, ECDIS900 electronic chart display and information system, VDR2000 voyage data recorder. The yachts are also equipped with LCD screens in all cabins, living areas, and the fly bridge, enabling totally independent access to centrally stored movies and music as well as the super luxury yachts navigational information, communication and security units. The entertainment systems are delivered by Peter Johansen Group A/S.

MARIS ECDIS900 is the first ECDIS in the world to receive a type approval certificate using a Flat Panel Computer (FPC). The ECDIS900 is certified to IEC 61774 ed. 2. The ECDIS900 is based on the MARIS SmartLine FPC, the only FPC in the world certified to IEC 60945 for use onboard ships. MARIS ECDIS900 market-share in Scandinavia is almost 100% for commercial vessels (retrofit) since the introduction more than 18 months ago.
