'Amazingly Intact' WWII-era Aircraft Carrier Surveyed

NOAA, working with private industry partners and the U.S. Navy, has confirmed the location and condition of the USS Independence, the lead ship of its class of light aircraft carriers that were critical during the American naval offensive in the Pacific during World War II. Resting in 2,600 feet of water off California's Farallon Islands, the carrier is "amazingly intact," said NOAA scientists, with its hull and flight deck clearly visible, and what appears to be a plane in the carrier's hangar bay.

Images of Historic San Francisco Wreck Revealed

NOAA and partners released three-dimensional sonar maps and images of an immigrant steamship lost more than 100 years ago in what many consider the worst maritime disaster in San Francisco history. On Feb. 22, 1901, in a dense morning fog, the SS City of Rio de Janeiro struck jagged rocks near the Golden Gate Bridge and sank almost immediately, killing 128 of the 210 passengers and crew aboard the ship. Fishermen in the area, hearing the ship's distress calls, helped rescue 82 survivors, many plucked from makeshift rafts and floating wreckage.

Long Beach Police Department takes delivery of Coda Octopus Underwater Inspection System (UIS™) system. The Port of Long Beach is the second busiest seaport in the United States and is a major gateway for trade with Asia, handling over six million containers annually. The UIS™ which includes Echoscope® real-time 3D sonar technology will be used primarily for underwater inspections of the port's 10 piers and eighty berths and other critical infrastructure. It will also be used for preventative maintenance such as keeping the shipping channels clear of dangerous debris and other objects.

Fugro Chance adopts the Coda Echoscope(R) to help in some of Its complex offshore operations in the Gulf of Mexico. Unique Maritime Group of UAE have announced that they have recently delivered two Echoscope 3D Sonars to DI-MEDCO, a joint venture between Dredging International and Middle East Dredging Company for the planned shore protection and harbor construction works of two artificial islands. The Echoscope, produced by CodaOctopus Products, is a unique sonar capable of producing real-time 3D imagery, enabling the operators of visualise underwater activity in 3D even in zero visibility conditions.

Charbonneau Named VP at CodaOctopus

CodaOctopus has named Bill Charbonneau as Vice President Americas for CodaOctopus Products, Inc. Having more than 35 years of experience in the offshore industry, Bill also brings to the company his hands on knowledge of the geophysical survey industry. Most recently he was the Business Unit Manager for the Survey and Inspection Systems at Teledyne Benthos Inc., dealing with sidescan sonars, sub-bottom profilers, bathymetric systems and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). Charbonneau will be leading the team at Blue Water House, St Petersburg, Florida and is already planning expansions over the coming months to include on site servicing and support of the Coda Echoscope with the range of geophysical, motion sensing and software products.
