New LCO2 Cargo Tank Design Gets KR Approval

KR (Korean Register) has granted an approval in principle (AIP) for a liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) cargo tank design, developed by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), during this weeks Gastech conference in Singapore.This AIP is the result of a joint project involving the three companies: HMD designed the cargo tank, HD KSOE conducted an engineering critical assessment (ECA), and KR ensured the design’s suitability by reviewing classification rules and international regulations.The demand for LCO2 carriers is projected to rise…

ClassNK Grants AiP for Ship that Can Transport Ammonia and Liquefied CO2

Japanese classification society ClassNK has granted Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) Approval in Principle (AiP) for a ship that can transport ammonia and liquefied CO2 (LCO2).LCO2 carriers play an important role as one of the means of efficiently transporting captured and liquefied CO2 to storage sites or effective use sites in the CCUS (Carbon dioxide Capture, Utilization, and Storage) value chain, which is attracting attention as one of the means to realize a low-carbon and decarbonized society…

LCA Endorses Government Report

U.S.-flag shipping on the Great Lakes provides efficient, safe, and environmentally sound transportation services to industries that are the backbone of the American economy finds a report released on February 12 by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration. The U.S.-flag Lakes fleet is “competitive with other modes of freight transportation in the movement of dry-bulk commodities and appears to be adequately capitalized to meet current market demands. The MARAD report notes that “studies have demonstrated that, on average, transportation cost savings from $10 to more than $20 per ton are associated with the use of lakers compared to the next most competitive transportation mode (rail or truck).”  This is crucially important…

Boat Sunk in Puget Sound

One ship was partially sunk and another hoisted onto its deck in Puget Sound. Constructed by Todd Pacific Shipyards for use in hurricane-ravaged Central America, 206-ft., 70-mw power barge Margarita was carried on the deck of 592-ft. Dockwise Swan to the waters off Nicarauga. Dockwise Swan is a semi-submersible heavy transport ship that actually sank 25 to 30 ft. while Margarita was floated into position above it. Dockwise Swan then resurfaced and hoisted Margarita onto its deck.
