Today in U.S. Naval History - February 5 1854 - Dedication of first chapel built on Navy property, Annapolis, Md. 1941 - Chief Nurse Marion B. Olds and Nurse Leona Jackson, Navy, arrive on Guam. 1971 - Moonwalk by Capt. Alan B. Shepherd, Jr. USN, Commander of Apollo 14 and CDR Edgar D. Mitchell, USN Lunar Module Pilot. During the 9 day mission, 94 lbs of lunar material was collected and Shepard became the first person to hit a golf ball on the moon. Recovery was by helicopter from USS New Orleans (LPH-11). Mitchell, lunar module pilot, participate in a moonwalk. During the nine-day mission, 94 pounds of lunar material was collected, and Shepard became the first person to hit a golf ball on the moon. A helicopter from USS New Orleans (LPH 11) takes care of recovery. 1981 - John F. Lehman Jr. assumes office as 65th Secretary of the Navy. Navy Christens USNS Alan Shepard
Military Sealift Command (MSC) advanced auxiliary dry cargo/ammunition ship USNS Alan Shepard (T-AKE 3) slides backwards into San Diego Bay during a christening ceremony held at the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO). The Navy christened USNS Alan Shepard (T-AKE 3), the newest ship in the Lewis and Clark class of underway replenishment ships Dec. 6, during a launching at General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO), San Diego. The ship honors the first American in space, Rear Adm. Alan B. Shepard Jr.
