Newport News Shipbuilding Partners With Commonwealth of Virginia
Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding division is partnering with the Commonwealth of Virginia in support of its major hiring initiative. Gov. Ralph Northam announced that various state agencies and regional community colleges will work with Newport News to augment ongoing efforts to hire as many as 7,000 new shipbuilders over the next five years. "Newport News Shipbuilding's success is important not just for Hampton Roads, but for the entire commonwealth," Northam said. "Therefore, it is critical that we support growth of this magnitude with an innovative partnership between state agencies that will address the company's workforce and training needs and ensure a pipeline of skilled talent.
QMT in STORM Simulator Collaboration
Quality Maritime Training (QMT) partners with Educational Systems & Technologies on the River and the Sea; (acronym STORM) to provice simulator & training technolgies. Quality Maritime Training (QMT) of St. Petersburg, Florida has partnered with Educational Systems and Technologies on the River and the Sea; STORM Ltd., to provide STORM's marine simulators, computer based training (CBT) programs and crew knowledge assessment systems to U.S. mariners. STORM is headquartered in Moscow, Russia and also has a second location in Saint Quentin, France - STORM SIM SARL.
Shipbuilders Rely On Training To Fill Crafts Jobs
With skilled craftsmen in short supply in U.S. coastal areas, many shipbuilders turn to their own, sometimes extensive, internal training. Because fewer young people are entering shipbuilding out of high school, the industry is faced with an aging workforce that will soon have to be replaced. As good jobs for shipfitters and welders go begging, industry leaders say it's way past time to spread the word about these opportunities.
