Bakker Sliedrecht Completes ESS Upgrade of Two Boskalis’ Diving Support Vessels

Bakker Sliedrecht has implemented energy storage systems (ESS) on board of the two Boskalis diving support vessels - BOKA Atlantis and BOKA Da Vinci.The installation of the ESS reduces the vessels’ fuel consumption and associated carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions by an average of up to 20%, according to Bakker Sliedrecht.The systems also provide a power supply and energy storage facility while the vessels are docked and contribute to quieter and more efficient operations…

Captain McManus Preps to Take the Helm of Empire State VII

Captain Morgan McManus will serve as the Ship’s Master on the Empire State VII, the first in a series of five National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV), which at press time was getting its post-sea trial finishing touches at Philly Shipyard. ABS to Class Scripps' New Research Vessel

Helsinki Shipyard Orders Main Equipment for Nornickel’s New Icebreaker

Finnish shipbuilder Helsinki Shipyard Oy announced it has completed purchasing contracts for the main equipment of Nornickel’s icebreaker contracted last year, along with model tests in ice and open water for the icebreaker design developed by Aker Arctic.Russian mining company Norilsk Nickel ordered the new environmentally friendly icebreaker for its operations in the Yenisei River basin, Yenisei Bay and the Kara Sea securing access to Dudinka seaport both for its own fleet and its partners.

New Ferry Being Built for Christian Island, Ontario

ABB Nets $150M Power and Propulsion Deal for Five Fincantieri Cruise Ships

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has awarded ABB a $150 million contract to equip five newbuild cruise ships with its Azipod electric propulsion and integrated electric power plant setup.Each cruise ship will be powered by twin Azipod units, bringing the total ordered propulsion power for the five newbuilds to 178 megawatts (238,700 horsepower)."Part of the order includes the largest and most powerful Azipod propulsion units ever to be installed at Fincantieri, rating at 20 megawatts each," ABB said. Virgin Picks ABB Power for Cruise Ships

Virgin Voyages has reportedly selected ABB Azipods to drive a trio of cruise ship newbuilds currently being built in Italy at Fincantieri's shipyard in Genoa. The 110,000 gt vessels, each measure 278 x 38 m and accomodating 2700 passengers and 1,150 crew, with the first due for delivery in 2020, the last in 2021. ABB is tasked to supply the complete electric power and propulsion package for the Virgin Voyages’ new fleet. Each oship will feature ABB’s Azipod propulsion, a gearless steerable propulsion system where the electric drive motor is in a submerged pod outside the ship hull.

Vard design Survey vessel for South African Navy

Offering the Vard Marine 9 105 Hydrographic/Oceanographic Survey vessel design, Southern African Shipyards, located in Durban, S.A. has been selected as the preferred bidder for the South African Navy Project “Hotel” program. This is a continued success for Vard Marine in designing science vessels. Vard Marine partnered with the shipyard to develop a design for the program and the final configuration results in a PC7 ice strengthened vessel of 95M in length with approximately 12.24MW installed diesel electric power plant and a maximum speed of 18 knots. The vessel has a 10,000nm range with 44 days endurance; incorporates the latest hydrographic and oceanographic sensor suite and will be manned by a total crew of 120 persons comprising ships’ crew and scientists.

East Boothbay, Maine based Washburn & Doughty said it has secured a contract with Harbor Docking and Towing, of Lake Charles, La., to design and build two 93’ x 38’ Hybrid Z Drive Tugs. The 93’ x 38’ hull is a proven design with 18 tugs in operation and 4 under construction.
